[Samba] Samba 3 PDC using LDAP as backend, what next ?
Hi, I have successfully setup a Samba PDC using a local LAP as the password backend. After I have added the first user 'testing' through pdbedit, some entries is added to the LDAP server too. However, when I tried to execute the 'net' commands(any) or smbmount or testing out the winbind(pam), all I get is error. So I just don't know how to proceed from here. Do I have to join this server to the domain(even it is already the PDC) ? My past experience with NT tells me that there are a number of default entries in SAM when I have setup NT as the PDC, do I have to recreate them in samba and if I do, how ? Below is the result of some usual commands that I can at least run without any error, just in case it gives a clue where I am now. #testparm Processing section [homes] Processing section [netlogon] Processing section [printers] Processing section [print$] Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf Loaded services file OK. [Samba] Solved: 'We dont find this rid' error - can't join a domain
I was able to solve this by manually updating root's entry in my ldap directory to have the rid that Samba was looking for. I don't understand the process that was leading Samba to look for a specific RID - if anyone can shed light on what exactly happens I'd appreciate it. Christopher Saul wrote: I'm posting this again in the hope that someone can shed some light on the error - I've included logs and as much detail as I can! Chris Original Message I'm using Samba 2.2.8a on Red Hat 8. I was able to set up Samba running as a PDC and have my Windows 2000 client join the domain and authenticate users, map home drives, etc, without any problems. [Samba] Error on joining domain - 'System computer account in its primary domain missing'
I'm running Samba 2.2.8a as a PDC on Red Hat 8, connecting to a Sun ONE Directory Server on a separate Sun box. Logging in locally allows me to access the appropriate shares and authenticate against the LDAP directory. Accessing via smbclient works fine. I'm able to get my Windows 2000 client to join the domain. After giving the root password there's a wait of around 45 serconds and then the 'welcome to the domain' box pops up. After rebooting however, attempting to login as a user gives the error - 'The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password in that account is incorrect' The system does have an account, which is proven by the fact that shares can be accessed when logged in locally to the Windows client. Based on stuff found on Google I've followed various steps listed below, but nothing seems to work. -- I've made the registry changes which appear to be recommended for XP and sometimes for W2K. No change. (Are they req'd for Win2K) -- Removed the W2K client from the directory, deleted that client machine account, re-added the W2K client to LDAP, rejoining the W2K client to the domain. Doesn't make any difference. -- Fiddled around with various things I can think of. I did have the W2K client happily connecting and authenticating to a different Samba PDC machine that was on the same network and that worked fine. That PDC was not using an LDAP backend. [Samba] Advanced Logon Resources from Windows Server
Hi, My organization is an university with many student/teacher users. I have migrated from Win2000 Server to Samba 2.2.8 and I'd like to implement the following resources: 1) User logon in specific machines: I need student logon in only one machine when doing tests. For example: joe using pc1, mary using pc2, etc. 2) User logon in specific hours: the same application for tests. For example: joe/mary using between 07:00 and 09:00 hours. 3) User must change password at next logon: when creating an user or changing the password (because user forgot it). These resources work fine and easy with Win2000 Server, but I didn't find them into Samba. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
RE: [Samba] Latest Samba Disto for Os390/Unix ?
I was able to get gzip to compile under USS with fairly little difficulty. OS/390 (zOS) doesn't host other operating systems. IBM's OTHER OS, zVM, does that, and there's a native Linux for it. Unfortunately, getting the Samba source onto USS (Unix System Services) is only the first part of the battle. USS, while POSIX compliant, is unusual enough that most Open Source products won't build there without SUBSTANTIAL fiddling. I was able to get gzip, xterm, and a couple of other programs to build, but someone else had done the work on the autoconf bit before. That old version of Samba was fixed to build under USS, but to my knowledge nobody has ever tried to retrofit the mods to a later version. IBM distributes a Samba equivalent with zOS 1.4 and above. It should be part of the base. -Original Message- From: Alexander List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, September 20, 2003 2:25 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Samba] Latest Samba Disto for Os390/Unix ? C'mon John, are you a system administrator for an S/390? :-) If I understand you correctly, you are trying to tell us that Samba might not be compatible with your OS because your OS doesn't have a certain unzipping program installed by default? You sound like a Windows user who fails to install WinZip... www.gzip.org has the gzip source, in case there's no binaries available for your OS. If you fail to build gzip, you will most likely have a hard time building Samba... AFAIR OS/390 allows you to host other operating systems that might work, then you could e.g. install Debian and run Samba in that virtual machine... scnr Alex -- Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. --John Lennon -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Hi , this is a job for policies just like in win2000 with poledit create NTConfig.POL with your wishlist lay it in you netlogon share on samba...so this should work user password change .next logon..i really dont know exact, but there was a discussion here will work ( later ? ) with samba 3 which you should upgrade...but you can create new passwords with usrmgr, and with password sync to unix their can change it too ( this is what i have tested !) [Samba] multiple permissioning for same user in username.map
Afternoon All I'm new to the list today, so be gentle with me ;-) I have a problem where I host a samba box for the purposes of shunting data about between different platforms, mostly Solaris (but with a little HP-UX, AIX Linux thrown in for good measure) to NT / 2K . I also have a number of NT / AD service accounts that need to connect through to different directories within my samba tree, and need to usermap the very long ADS names through to a local account on the samba server, typically an example would be; [foo] path = /toplevel/subdir1 valid users = localacc, some_service_account_from_ads_domain1, some_service_account_from_ads_domain1 guest ok = no writeable = yes [otherfoo] path = /toplevel/subdir2 valid users = localac2, some_service_account_from_ads_domain1, some_service_account_from_ads_domain1 guest ok = no writeable = yes I have my usermap.txt like this; localacc = some_service_account_from_ads_domain1, some_service_account_from_ad_domain1 localac2 = some_service_account_from_ads_domain1, some_service_account_from_ad_domain1 It seems that samba gets it's knickers in a twist with this as it is presumably trying to work out which UID the user is on which share - which is understandable. Is there a way to specify a usermap.txt per share? the only docs I can find list it as a global directive. Being a bear of very little brain I am having difficulty working around this as I have no control over the NT / ADS domain accounts. RE: [Samba] OpenBSD 3.3 and samba-2.2.8
A couple of suggestions: 1. Add your Samba server to the hosts and lmhosts files on your PCs. Copy hosts lmhosts to the netlogon share directory. In your logon.bat put these lines (change SERVER to your server name): - if exist %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.old del %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.old ren %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts hosts.old copy \\SERVER\NETLOGON\hosts %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc if exist %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.old del %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.old ren %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts lmhosts.old copy \\SERVER\NETLOGON\lmhosts %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc nbtstat -R - Then at the PCs, run the logon.bat, using the server's IP address: Start, Run, \\SERVERIP\NETLOGON\logon.bat, Ok See if you can see the server in the Network Neighborhood. When you have to make changes to the hosts/lmhosts, the changes are loaded during the users logins. The nbtstat -R purges reloads the remote cache name table. 2. Use WINS WINS Support = yes If the Samba server will provide it. WINS server = 192.168.1.xxx to point to the WINS server on your network. 3. Be sure the server/PCs are in the same Workgroup/Domain. 4. Rem out the hosts allow to see if that's a cause. If not, add it back in. Don't forget to restart the daemons after steps 2 4. Hope this helps. [Samba] Samba 3.0rc4 + SrvTools = unusual behavior
Summary: -- Hello, when using the MS NT SrvTools (User Server Manager for Domains), I get an error when I try to access an individual user's properties (The following error occurred while accessing the properties of the user blah \n The specified procedure could not be found \n The user properties cannot be edited or viewed at this time); however, when I try this same operation from a machine not in that domain, it works. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this behavior and has any thoughts on how I can correct the behavior so as to be able to use the User Manager from the machine in the domain. The details/history: -- We have a test domain (NTDOM) upon which we worked out the kinks for using Samba 2.2.x as our PDC. Once the test domain was happy, we then created a production samba PDC. We're now updating the NTDOM (test) PDC from 2.2.8a to 3.0rc4 (as part of a move to Samba 3.0). We've upgraded the RH7.3 to the 3.0.0 rc4 rpm, imported the old smbpasswd file into a tdbsam (to gain user profile control), set up the groups/groupmapping, and fleshed out the smb.conf with the necessary add/delete user/group scripts (to allow user of the MS NT SrvTools). There are three machines in the mix: 1. NTDOM PDC - Samba 3.0rc4 - RH7.3 Linux: named pdc 2. NTDOM workstation - W2K Server (stand alone) SP4: named ws1 3. non-NTDOM workstation - W2K pro: SP3 named lt1 From ws1, I get the error only when trying to view/edit an individual user's properties. I can administer the Domain groups just fine and Server Manager seems to work fine. However, if I log onto lt1 (a machine not on the NTDOM domain) and establish a connection to one of pdc's shared as root, then when I run User Manager and guide it to NTDOM, it works fine. I can view and edit individual user's properties without incident. I've read through all the new documentation (the new html docs are quite impressive and are well-formatted), I've scoured all the old documentation, checked the mailing lists, and googled away--yet still have not come up with anything. [Samba] Samba not announcing the correct IP address to a Windows NT Wins server
We have two systems with dual NICs that run samba 2.2.5 with winbind, and neither of them is announcing the system's primary IP address correctly to the WINS server. The systems show up in the wins database with the secondary IP address (which is the private network we use for the heartbeat/meta data on our CXFS cluster). We worked around it by entering the correct IP addresses for these systems as static IP entries in the WINS server's database, but it would be nice to know how we could get those systems to automatically announce themselves correctly. The nsswitch.conf file for these machines uses files first (local host table) then dns The primary IP addresses for these systems is in the local host table as are the hostnames for the 2nd NICs (i.e. samiam .vs. private-samiam) I think the samba name resolve order setting of host wins bcast means that I use the UNIX nameservice lookup first (as defined by nsswitch.conf), then ask the wins server, then broadcast for the information. I've told samba who the wins server is, but I don't have a remote announce parameter. Is this what I'm missing or do I need to make my netbios name = SAMIAM be lower case (or is there something else I need to do to get these systems to announce themselves correctly to the WINS server?) [Samba] utmp grievances
Dear All, I have installed the current version of Slackware Linux which includes samba-2.2.8a. My previous system had samba-2.0.7 with the utmp patch by David Lee applied. The original/patched utmp support had a 'utmp hostname' parameter to select between logging by hostname or netbios name. This very useful parameter is missing from 2.2.8a. IMHO this is a real pity. Is this an oversight or was there a reason for this? Even worse, 2.2.8a actually logs by IP address rather than hostname despite the relevant variable in smbd/utmp.c being 'hostname'. My machine is running bind so I presume this is intentional? If so it seems a bit ugly -- I mean eg. telnet connections are logged in utmp/wtmp by hostname if one exists. One other thing: My old system ran with 'security = share' and the new one I've configured with 'security = user'. I found (after much initial puzzlement) that this was necessary on 2.2.8a to get the utmp logging to work! I have a 'username map' file with entries like; !unixuser1 = Windows user1 !unixuser2 = Windows user2 myguest = * where myguest is a real user (with passwd smbpasswd) passwords. I have some 'guest ok' plus 'guest only' shares which should be accessible to everyone -- eg. public access printer and readonly /pub directory. My 'objection' is that utmp/wtmp logs connections to these public shares as being from user myguest, despite the remote PC user not knowing/specifying the password for myguest. I have a 'guest account = nobody' global record in smb.conf where the nobody user is password-less. Surely utmp/wtmp should log such connections as coming from nobody (as the patched 2.0.7 + 'security = share' system does). Again, this seems misleading and undesirable. I'm tempted to try back-porting the 'utmp directory' feature into 2.2.8a -- Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of? Also, the SAMBA_GUEST account must exist, and it must have read and write access to it's default directory and to SAMBA_ROOT:[VAR]. Because of the unique security requirements, I strongly recommend that a special account SAMBA__GUEST be used. The SAMBA_GUEST account is misnamed. It is not really a guest account, and is required for most clients to do any access to the server. When you disable the Guest account on a Microsoft Server, it is not totally disabling the account. Certain network operations still use the security information from that account according to people who work on the main SAMBA core. Also could someone point me to some *VMS Specific* docs. The online html docs are useful but are rather too unix specific for someone that doesn't speak Unix. For Samba 2.0.6 and earlier, I put a FAQ on comp.os.vms and in Encompasserve. http://www.google.com should be able to find it. A couple of people on comp.os.vms have expressed an interest in writing up a more OpenVMS friendly how-to or quick start for SAMBA, but I have not seen any documentation. Nor have I seen them post on this mailing list. The comp.os.vms newsgroup is an alternate place for asking about SAMBA for OpenVMS. Also as SAMBA for OpenVMS is more closely tracking the behavior of the UNIX SAMBA, sometimes an answer can be found in the main SAMBA mailing list. Be warned, that one has a higher volume. (Like me). Is there some UID equivalent that needs to be poked in somewhere in addition to username and hashed password? Is there some way to make it use the SYSUAF instead of a separate user database? As I posted above. Samba on OpenVMS uses the SYSUAF for two accounts for every connection. To get it to just use the SYSUAF, you need to disable encrypted passwords. Other changes may be required. I'll post my smb.conf or anything else that might help. Posting the entire smb.conf or other large logs rarely helps. Increasing the debug level and then looking at the last few lines of the resulting smbd log in SAMBA_ROOT:[VAR] will usually show what the problem is. -John [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal Opinion Only PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT ETIQUETTE MESSAGE BEFORE POSTING: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
