[Samba] Windows XP Home Edition
Just a thought, does your Mortgage software have an Auto save feature? If so may you can set it for every 5 or 10 minutes to keep the share active. I would think someone has developed a work around for this by now. Have you Checked Google for one? Kev Message: 31 Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 08:01:27 -0700 From: Eric Treu [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain I am using Samba 2.2.3a-12.3 on a Debian server. All the clients but one are XP home edition. I have a share on the server which all workstations are able to see, view, write, edit, etc. After 15 minutes of inactivity the share obtains a red X over the share icon. I am able to reactivate the share by clicking on the red x with no problems. I understand that Microsoft, in their wisdom, has a share timeout after 15 minutes of inactivity. This might not seem like a problem, but the mortgage software will default to the local hard drive if it cannot find the share; therefore, writing data to the hard drive and not to the shared data drive. Can anybody help me. I have come to the conclusion that the one XP Professional box that I have does not have this problem. I don't want to upgrade, buy, or install XP Professional on all the boxes. [Samba] My Experiences
Hello all. About two years ago I told a friend I was wanted to build a server for my SOHO, he handed me this cd with Redhat 6.2, which he spoke of highly. So I installed it, which was akin to learning a new language by listening to two people talk. The command line was no foreign to me since I had years of experience with SODS, but with the exception for the dir command, Linux was a whole new world. So in I dove, head first, having to install over and over again since I wasn't experienced enough to fix it yet. I turned to the 'net, is so, finding these mailing lists. These, with the combined knowledge and experience of many minds, helped me more than they know. Im still no expert, but I am much better at troubleshooting my server (RH) and getting things back on track, much to the excitement of my Teenage Step -Daughter and Wife. No my server is running Samba as a PDI with the only snags being my constant tweaking and upgrading. My point? Linux (whatever flavor) is like anything else, a constant learning experience, treat is as such. One of the most important things is your ability to hang on and not get discouraged when it just doesn't work!. Search and research until your fingers fall off and your eyes pop out, only ask here when you have enough information so it looks like your trying to learn. These folks are not here to fix it for you, that costs, but to point you in the right direction based on what they did to solve the problem, and don't just answer back it didn't work Like the users, the systems are unique, so one solution may not be appropriate for another system, but a part of it might fix ya right up. Just keep moving forward and learning all you can. Windows is good for those who don't like to tinker much, but you wouldn't be messing with this if you didn't, would you? Just my, well about .05 Kev -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Samba switches install directories.
Hey, My system is RH 7.3, Kern 2.2.21, samba 2.2.7a. When I installed 2.2.7a tar ball, it put the files in /usr/local/samba instead of /etc/samba. What switch did I miss during ./configure that will put them in /etc/samba? I saw a few switches but im not sure which to use to achieve me goal, and I want to avoid messing with it since it is working. [Samba] WIN NT 4.0 AND SAMBA
Do either NT 4.0 Sp6 or Samba 2.2.7a need any special config to get the NT workstation to see the network? What is happening is the DHCP service isn't activating, I suspect hardware because even hard coding the IP doesn't work on the NT Box, I get Link and 100tx lights but no activity. I have set the workgroup, checked all protocols ect. I was just making sure I have the NT box set up correctly. Maybe a log or two would help or a resetup of CUPS after the update to SAMBA. CUPS is on ver 1.1.18, using it here with great results. Might want to update that too. I don't know. The upgrades are for you to choose. The greatest resource for the choices you make might well be the change log at the samba.org sight saying what was added and patched/fixed. I wonder why M$ uses patches/upgrade/updates where we uses fixes? Your choice. I say if it works dont fix it. :) But maybe you do want to. Cheers. Karl- I recent upgraded to 2.2.8, which went fine. [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a Install
I just downloaded and installed the above tar ball, all went fine, all runs, hits no errors (./configure, make, make install bin, make install_man). When it finished, it typed, service smb stop, service smb restart, then smbclient -L firewall, which still reported 2.2.7a. So I tried it another way, /etc/rc.d/init.d/smbd stop/start...Smbclient -L firewall yielded the same version number, ditto after a reboot. As far as I can tell, the install was fine, but I still can't seem to get proof that the new version is running. Now the old version is fine, and I don't really want to make revert and take a chance of messing that up (I know, but I'm cautious). Any clue how to get the new version to come up? [Samba] Samba Woes.
I tried to add a test user adduser, SMBadduser and as far as the linux box was concerned, It was fine, but the Win98 box kept giving me "Incorrect Password" Samba's log agreed with "Invalid Username/Password" on several lines. Then Samba and NMB stopped working all together,. I finally "woke" Samba up,. though it start very slowly (about 2 mins) but NMB doesn't budge. Of course it might as well not be there since I can do anything connectivity wise. I went thought the DIAGNOSIStxt and can Ping both ways, but still SMB and NMB don't want to work. I even tried removing and re installing them (RPM version) to no avail. Imp thinking it has something to do with a connection (or lack thereof) with the netbios ports, but I cant find any evidence to prove or deny this. Any Suggestion as where I can look would be helpful. I even tried several methods of reinstalling, but for some reason my PC wont boot from the CD even though is set up like that in the BIOS.
