[Samba] Samba 2.2.7a to Samba 3.0.2a
Hello List, I'm planning a migration from Samba 2.2.7a to 3.0.2a, samba is actually running on Solaris 8.0 on a sun E450. Now, Looking at the smb.conf (the global parameters) what should I take care of? # Global parameters [global] domain logons = yes security = user wins support = yes create mask = 0600 directory mask = 0700 log file = /var/samba/log.%m log level = 1 max log size = 0 interfaces = 10.52.1.1 10.42.1.1 domain master = Yes security mask = 0777 level2oplocks = no encrypt passwords = Yes dont descend = /proc,/dev,/etc,/usr printing = SYSV server string = Samba Server workgroup = hosts allow = 127. 10. 172.16. netbios name = ### socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_KEEPALIVE SO_RCVBUF=16384 SO_SNDBUF=16384 local master = Yes min passwd length = 6 os level = 99 oplocks = no use client driver = yes At the same question, this machine should be a domain controller (PDC?) and the preferable server, Should I take care of this in any manner? Obviously, if you can see any improvement that I could apply on Samba3.0.2a to make it work faster, I'm more than happy to do it :) Cheers!!! Pablo.- --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a and SunOS 5.8
Hi, Samba 2.2.7 series worked fine for us in Solaris 8 and 9. However we are currently running 2.2.8a on our samba server (Solaris 9) and working towards upgrading to samba 3.0.2a with ldapsam. We used versions 2.2.7, 2.2.7a,2.2.8, 2.2.8a for production in a server running nfs for ~200 Linux/sun clients and being the domain controller for ~20 windows machines without seeing any performance issues. The server is dual homed to two subnets and has gigabit uplinks. Diego On Sun, 14 Mar 2004, Cloutier,Joe wrote: > > I have 2 Sun servers. I have 2 Sun servers. One is running Samba 2.0.7 and I have no problems with response time or performance. The other server is running Samba 2.2.7a and on this server there are performance issues, slowness and long response times with long latencies over 400 msec. Both Sun server's are running SunOS 5.8. Is Samba 2.2.7a supported on this Unix box or is for a Linux server? Should I be experiencing any problems with this release. Thanks in advance for your support. [Samba] Help with Office / Samba samba-2.2.7a on FreeBSD 4.9-RC
Greetings, System: FreeBSD 4.9-RC Samba: 2.2.7a I have a weird SAMBA problem. On my XP Pro box against our Samba server (been online and such for long time) from Office XP only when ever I save a document it gets set as read only. Hence I only get one save for any given document. This is a new problem and is affecting only office XP. Other accounts other then mine do not have this problem. I have tried adding in things like force create mask, force security, etc. No help at all. This is a really new problem. The problem is there is I can not nail down exactly when this started. Also this problem is ONLY in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). In Excel we get the error message: "The Document was saved succesfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please Close Document and try again." The Read-Only bit is now set on the file. I have tried creating a new user and that user gets this problem too. I have, in an attempt to solve this, installed ALL the MS Office patches, problem persists. If I login as a different user that was using office 2k first the problem does not exist. We have not updated Samba nor office. This problem started strangely after we added the WINS definition Do not know if related. Can not find any references to this problem on the net...naturally. If someone can point me at some things to try I would be deeply grateful!! [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a and Word 2000 = Corrupted (?) files
I have a Samba 2.2.7a PDC (with an OpenLDAP backend) that seems to be giving me trouble. Here's the scoop: I have Windows 2000 Pro clients running Word 2000. Over the past several days, a lot of them have had trouble with their documents - most of the time during a save. The most critical of these failures presents the following error message when saving: "Word has lost data due to a bad network connection or missing floppy. Documents relying on this data are going to be saved and then closed." The only option on this dialog is to select "OK" and word commence to save a "rescue document". This takes a VERY long time - in excess of 10 minutes. Immediately following that process Word presents us with another error message: "There is an unrecoverable disk error file . The disk you're working on has a media problem that prevents Word from using it. Try the following: Try Formatting another disk. Save the document to another disk." Then Word goes and saves a files called Rescued Document <#>.txt in the user's My Documents folder. Looking at this file is worthless as it appears to be hex-code or something. This basically ends up with the user loosing work - a total of about 9 hours over the past three days in this most extreme case. I have scoured the mailing lists, Google'd for possibilities but have been unable to come up with any solution. I'm hoping someone here has run into this and may be able to point me in the right direction. I have included the smb.conf file from the server in question below - in case it helps. The problem files are stored in home, admin and projects shares. == # * # -- Nesbitt Engineering, Inc. DOH! But I did figured it out. We are using the serial numbers of the machines as their computer names. Some of them start with letters and some of them start with numbers. Linux doesn't won't allow usernames that begins with a number. So when the add user script was running it would hit that name, fail to create a system user, then smbpasswd couldn't enter it because there was no system user, then windows would kick back an 'access denied' message. It would have been nice for that to show up in the samba.log but it didn't. I found out by manually entering the computer name at the console and seeing the 'invcalid username' message. We'll just have to modify our naming convention a little bit for the computers. Thanks for the response though. -Allen Allen Seelye "DeadTOm" [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ# 8286205 -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Samba 2.2.7a - UID Problems ?
Hello! We are using samba 2.2.7a with a 2.4.20+xfs Kernel. Now we've got the problem that sometimes a database client (which is loaded from a samba share) can't find some files. It's randomly which ones are missing and it's not exactly reproduceable. What I've seen is that after some time the user id of the smbd process changes: 17:47: smbd nico 17:50: smbd bastian 17:51: smbd nico 17:58: smbd root The process keeps on beeing there, the pid does not change. It looks like when the smbd process changes the uid the connection from the client is lost. Under Linux, smbmount seems to reintitate a new connection. I can't really tell what windos does, but what I see is the lack of files (or at least the database client does..whenever I look into the explorer, I can see them...). What should I do? Do you have any suggestions ? If I can debug it or if you know howto solve, please tell me. [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a 64bit executable on Solaris 8
Good Morning, I recently compiled Samba 2.2.7a as a 64bit executable on Solaris 8. The Solaris 8 server is configured to permit 65535 files to be open, while Samba has been configured to allow 65500 files to be open. These large number of files are required to permit simulataneous compilations to take place a single build server, though there are multiple build servers. Last time I tried to use Samba (version 2.2.3a) this did not work, however version 2.2.7a is working fine, however Samba is complaining about too many files being open. [Samba] samba 2.2.7a and multiple logins...
Hello I use a new samba server with LDAP support as PDC for some Windows2000 and WindowsXP machines. All is working nice. The useer can login with a user/password in the domain, we have remote profiles, the user can access the samba shares and print etc. But after some time (< 1 day) we get a smbstatus output like the attached file. Users are connected multiple times with the same share (without rebooting/crash the windows OS). And as a result of this, the user have looked outlook files. (the outlook PST-files are on one samba share...) Have someone a problem like this and maybe some ideas or solutions? Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a as PDC with LDAP: c000019b error code
Tobias, I ran into flakiness similar to this once on our network here. Turned out to be a port on the switch that had gone bad (lots of errors, but some packets were making it through). A network problem might explain why you are seeing nothing in the logs on the PDC from that machine. Try checking the error count on the switch port the machine is plugged into. [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a as PDC with LDAP: c000019b error code
Hello! I've run into a strange problem with samba-2.2.7a. I compiled it with --with-ldapsam on a Debian/Woody box, set up openLDAP 2.0.23 with all users and machine trust accounts and configured samba to using LDAP and being a PDC. Works ok so far, users may authenticate and use their shares. But they can not *always* log into the domain from NT4.0 workstations. Sometimes yes, sometimes after the eighth or more try, sometimes not at all. Regardless what machine or what user or what day of week. The error code is always the same "...cannot log you on...(C19b)". In the cases where it works, everything runs all normal. Domain logon, scripts, even password change with LDAP (great thing by the way). There is no visible difference in setup of any component between the cases where it works and the ones where it doesn't. I did the (I suppose...) normal procedure: set up the machine trust account in LDAP with smbpasswd -m -a and added the NT4.0 box into the domain (success message appeared on NT: "Welcome to Domain..."). I have read the FAQ about this error code and I am sure I have not changed the domain SID nor up- or downgraded samba version. I have learned that domain SID is not longer in $privatedir/DOMAIN.SID but is now rather a record in secrets.tdb. So I compiled tdbdump from the samba distribution, watched closely what might happen to the domain SID and made sure it has indeed not been changed since the initial install of this samba. Could this problem be LDAP specific? Or maybe a network problem? Some further thoughts: In log.smb with loglevel 4 there is no entry at all of the machine where the error occurs. So maybe the NT4.0 box is completely refusing to talk to the server from some point on? Deleting and readding the machine trust account and rejoining the workstation *seems* to have a little effect (maybe just imagination), often the login succeeds after the first or second try (instead of fourth to eighth) after rejoining but only with some machines/users. For any ideas I would be greatly thankful! Here are the configuration details: ./configure \ --host=i386-linux \ --build=i386-linux \ --with-fhs \ --prefix=/usr \ --sysconfdir=/etc \ --with-privatedir=/etc/samba \ --localstatedir=/var \ --with-netatalk \ --with-smbmount \ --with-pam \ --with-syslog \ --with-sambabook \ --with-utmp \ --with-readline \ --with-pam_smbpass \ --with-libsmbclient \ --with-winbind \ --with-msdfs \ --with-ldapsam (actually the standard Packaging/Debian/debian/rules build with added --with-ldapsam) I have put it into PDC mode by putting the standard stuff into smb.conf: security = user domain logons = yes domain master = yes os level = 99 preferred master = yes wins support = yes encrypt passwords = yes and a netlogon share, of course. I have put all users and machine trust accounts into LDAP. I am using the posixAccount objectclass with pam_ldap and nss_ldap, so apart from root and the standard system users, /etc/passwd is empty. /etc/samba/smbpasswd does not exist at all. [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a / XP / Printing
Hi, I have a number of printers set up under Samba on a Linux box, using the default spoolss mode. We are experiencing a number of problems with printing, and I would like to eliminate the unnecessary step of spooling on the client (as I suspect this may cure some/all of them). For some reason however, when I go to the advanced properties on the printer driver dialog on the client, and select "Print directly to printer", although the options appears to set, when I re-enter the dialog, it has reverted back to spooling. FWIW, I am a domain admin on the network which is specified in the printer admins line in my smb.conf, and I do not understand why this problem is caused by printers shared from Samba - surely the spooling setting is a client thing, nothing to do with the printer server?! None the less, this problem is consistent and unique to the samba printers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Matthew. PS. Apologies to anybody reading the newsgroups for the duplicate post, but I only twigged too late that all the posts had come through this mailing list. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Hello, I tried to install Samba as standard source code software on QNX 6.2 NC: ./configure make The compiler report error in libsmb/cli_samr.c row 419 about uint type of ptr. I changed the type to uint32 since init_samr_q_query_useraliases function accept uint32 pointer. After that the compilation finished successfully. [Samba] samba 2.2.7a, security=server, password server = win2k, winxp client
Hello, I'm having some problems with the this setting. I'm trying to have a winxp client logon to a samba-2.2.7a machine which is using a win2k server as password server. It works if I use a linux client (smbclient): smbclient -L pandora -U bush%george Pandora is the samba machine, and it contacts the w2k server and validates bush's password. This is working, but only with smbclient. I can't do it with the winxp logon. The logs show that, for some reason, the winxp client is connecting to the samba server as anonymous. Nowhere does the "bush" username appears, not even in tcpdump. This bush user exists on the samba server and on win2k, but not in /etc/smbpasswd (since I expect the password to be validated against w2k). If I change security to user and add the bush user to /etc/smbpasswd, then the winxp client can logon just fine into this domain. I have the pandora (linux) machine added to win2k, and the winxp machine is also added to /etc/smbpasswd on pandora. Another info: since the linux samba server and w2k server are on the same subnet, I put them on different domains (w2k is a controller for domain A, and both winxp and linux server are on domain B). Could this be it? I'm doing it because the w2k machine will be on a different subnet in the final setup, and then I plan on using the same domain. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Samba 2.2.7a - Unix groups bug?
Further to comments made in another thread, Samba 2.2.7a appears to limit the maximum number of Unix groups a user can have to 13 (NGROUPS_MAX - 3.) The cause appears to be Samba adding to the groups list returned by the getgroups() system call, such that a subsequent setgroups() call has the number of groups set to (# of groups + 3). For instance, my account has 12 groups; running truss against the smbd thread for my account showed it calling "setgroups(15, 0x.);" For another user who has 14 groups, the call is "setgroups(17, 0x);" - this fails with "Err#22 EINVAL", since 17 is greater than NGROUPS_MAX (= 16 under Solaris.) The difference of 3 groups may be environment/implementation specific. This behaviour didn't occur under Samba 2.2.0, so I suspect that one of the fixes to group handling mentioned in the Changelogs is responsible. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Paul Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Samba 2.2.7a discards LDAP attributes
Hi there. I had configured OpenLDAP, NSS and PAM over RedHat 7.3 for Linux authentication, and they work pretty well. Recently, I downloaded Samba 2.2.7a source code and configured it for LDAP access (--with-ldapsam). I also configured it as a domain logon for Win98 authentication and file server. It had looked to be working well, but after some tests, I noticed Samba is ignoring LDAP data. Please, take a look on the following for an example. That is a fragment of samba debug (smbd -i -d 5): ldap_open_connection: starting... StartTLS issued: using a TLS connection ldap_open_connection: connection opened ldap_connect_system: succesful connection to the LDAP server ldap_search_one_user: searching for:[(&(uid=lfogel)(objectclass=sambaAccount))] get_single_attribute: [uid] = [lfogel] Entry found for user: lfogel get_single_attribute: [pwdLastSet] = [1043443975] get_single_attribute: [logonTime] = [0] get_single_attribute: [logoffTime] = [2147483647] get_single_attribute: [kickoffTime] = [2147483647] get_single_attribute: [pwdCanChange] = [0] get_single_attribute: [pwdMustChange] = [2147483647] get_single_attribute: [cn] = [lfogel] get_single_attribute: [homeDrive] = [] get_single_attribute: [smbHome] = [] get_single_attribute: [scriptPath] = [lfogel.bat] get_single_attribute: [profilePath] = [] get_single_attribute: [description] = [Leonardo Fogel] ... As one can see, Samba is connecting to LDAP and loading the user information. However, Win98 was not running the script "lfogel.bat". If I set the smb.conf parameter "logon script = %U.bat", Win98 will load and run "lfogel.bat". But, if I set "logon script = %U1.bat" (or comment it), Win98 will NOT run anything. (Of course, "lfogel1.bat" does not exist.) I also look at the Samba source code in order to find out what could be my mistake. It looks that the function "pass_check_smb" in "smbd/password.c" manages the access to LDAP. The function declares "SAM_ACCOUNT *sampass = NULL", initializes it (pdb_init_sam(&sampass)), loads LDAP attributes (pdb_getsampwnam(sampass, user)), checks the passwords (smb_password_ok(sampass, ...)) and finally discards everything (pdb_free_sam(sampass)). So, it looks like Samba 2.2.7a ignores all LDAP attributes after authentication succeeds. Please, if someone can figure out what the problem is, let me know. Thanks and regards. ___ Busca Yahoo! [Samba] samba-2.2.7a RPMs available for Mandrake 8.0, 8.1, 8.2 and 9.0
Just a quick note that I have finalised RPMs of 2.2.7a for Mandrake 8.0, 8.1, 8.2 and 9.0. They are currently available from http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/samba . Updates are in the works for 9.0, and RPMs for all releases should go to the samba mirrors soon, but if you're having problems with large file support, or are still running 2.2.6 for large file support, I thought you might want to grab these now ... (but please only take them from here if you need them urgently ... we're on tight bandwidth ...). Also note that I have applied patches for: 1)Large file support for smbclient and smbtar (posted here) 2)Referral support for LDAP when samba is running against a slave ldap server (from http://www.unav.es/cti/ldap-smb/ldap-smb-2_2-howto.html#patches) I have verified that large file support is fixed in smbclient (and smbd of course ..), but haven't tested smbtar, I would appreciate a report from someone who uses smbtar as to whether it works or not. LDAP-enabled RPMs will not be availble in the updates for 9.0 since we don't ship with ldap support by default. Finally, I have also update the samba3.0alpha21 RPMs for 9.0 with more features, these are availabe at: http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/mandrake9.0/samba-3.0alpha21/ All these packages are also in Mandrake cooker (samba3 in contrib). Finally, thanks to Danny Tholen for compiling on 8.2, I don't have an 8.2 box to build on any more (and my 8.0 and 8.1 boxes will be upgraded soon too ...) [Samba] samba 2.2.7a/LDAP backend problem ... bug ?
Hi ! Here is my story: I have working config. with samba 2.2.7a (compiled from sources), openldap-2.0.23-4 (rpms) on rh 7.3 (2.4.20 with ext3 patch). (First server is a LDAP server, second - PDC (samba with ldap), third - (samba joined to domain with ldap)). The problem: when i try to add user from domain to locaL nt/w2k group, in place where username should be displayed i have number with "\" before it. For ex: "\S-1-5-21-1.." - it looks like "winbind separator". I have disabled the winbind features in ./configure (--disable-winbind), i have no options about winbind in my smb.conf. No errors in samba-log. greetz boka --- Wszystko, czego potrzebuje nowoczesna kobieta! RE: [Samba] samba 2.2.7a and winbind
Another option is the -A option for wbinfo. Note, this is different from -a. -A username%password Store username and password used by winbindd during session setup to a domain controller. This enables winbindd to operate in a Windows 2000 domain with Restrict Anonymous turned on (a.k.a. Permissions compatiable with Windows 2000 servers only). So if + is your seperator, something to the affect of wbinfo -A DOMAIN+adm%passwd ~ Daniel > -Original Message- > From: Alex Kramarov [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Monday, January 06, 2003 4:36 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [Samba] samba 2.2.7a and winbind > > > if you are running w2k domain in native mode, i believe that > this should > solve the problem : > http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba-technical/2001-October/032017.htm l3 - Original Message - From: "Peter Milburn" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Samba (E-mail)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, January 06, 2003 11:00 PM Subject: [Samba] samba 2.2.7a and winbind > I have a very weird situation happening > > I am authenticating of the NT PDC, and winbind is doing its job, how ever. > When I do a wbinfo -u or -g I am getting this 0xc022. I've noted the same problem with 2.2.7a. So far I've not found any answer to the problem but simply chalked it down as "Samba not capable of handling W2K SP3 clients". :-/ -- Jonas Öberg Systems administrator/webmaster, Department of Informatics, School of Economics and Commercial Law, Gothenburg University. [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a and LDAP Rebind for Slave enviroment ...
Greetings ... Been away a little so, please forgive me if this has been discussed ... I did search the archives and googled the net and this is what I came up with ... Standard Samba 2.2.7 does not rebind to do updates. This is a problem when using LDAP and a replicated directory. I found http://www.unav.es/cti/ldap-smb/ldap-smb-2_2-howto.html, which has a patch to add rebind. Which I am going to try, because I need it and it looks right, not that I am a programmer or anything like that. I was wondering when, or if this would be added to 2.2. I know that we don't wish to add anything to 2.2, unless it is a bug fix or sercurity problem, but this could be a problem before 3.0 gets released as production. Thanks. [Samba] SAMBA 2.2.7a and Windows XP
I've been having these really annoying issues ever since I started to configure SAMBA with Windows XP. As it seems the XP-machine detects the SAMBA-share on occasions, and even manages to connect to it; but only for a while. I have found no clue whatsoever why it connects only "sometimes". It seems that when the Windows XP machine is just booted, it normally gets access to the Linux-machine, but after just a while it looses the access. I'm also running a Windows 98SE-machine on the very same network, however the connection between Linux <---> Windows98SE seems to be flawless. It detects, browses, downloads, etc. without the slightest problem. To go back to the issue, I'm on a 10Mbit Broadband connection, and my IP is assigned by DHCP, I'm always on the same C-net. Locally the network runs at 100Mbit... (switched), and here's what's strange. WHEN I run regular TCP-transfers to the Linux system (such as FTP, etc.) ; the transferrate is relevant to that of a 10Mbit connection (it seems as it goes "outside" the LAN, and connects that way. _BUT_ when I get 'connected' on SAMBA, it accelerates and behaves like a 100Mbit network. As I said, these occasions occur erratically; so I cannot really find a common denominator. Sometimes it happens just when I transfer the very "last" of the files (over FTP). My first conclusion is that there's something wrong with the Windows XP configuration, but I seem to have tried most of the "logical solutions"... I've switched off NetBIOS, NetBEUI, (and ON, in all combinations), but it doesn't seem to do anything but either limit the percentage to 0 (zero) when I manage to connect. I've also tried using: \\samba.host.ext\ ; and that doesn't work (I suppose it has to do with my ISP has blocked port 139, to prevent people from accessing eachothers shares across apartments) I've tried to remove the external TP-connection, but to no avail. I really believe that it has to do with Windows XP. Someone told me it had to do with LmCompatibilityLevel... but I cannot draw any conclusions there either. I've really tried to find a solution, but I just can't do it. Hello, I had a system running nicely, replacing a Netware server with Samba 2.2.6. I had not removed the Novell client, or its IPX protocol from Win98 workstations, yet everything was working nicely. I upgraded to Samba 2.2.7a, and now all of a sudden, all the Win98 workstations that had the Novell client on them got deathly slow. I "solved" the problem by removing fully the Novell client, and IPX, but something in the change from 2.2.6 o 2.2.7a definitely messed things up. I note that a Win2k server does NOT have this same problem (with slow access). Now, the slowness I think happens in a file open/close or something similar, as I did some timing tests, and determined that copying one large file still is about the same speed. But running an app that opens a number of files definitely shows up this problem. [Samba] Samba 2.2.7a
I am using Slackware 8.1 and just compiled samba 2.2.7a with only smbmount added to the configure script. First of two issues: When trying to access swat I get 401 Bad Authorization username or password incorrectSwat worked in 2.2.7 so I don't know what happened here Second issue: When creating a folder on the samba share from W2K or NT4 I get a windows pop up alert stating "You may not be able to access files created in the folder \\sambaserver\share.
