Kernel 2.6.32 and atl1c driver
I recently did a http install of SL6.1 as a virtualisation host. One of the network interfaces is a Atheros Communications AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0) using the ATL1C driver. One of the host machines (under KVM) has a https web interface (Vyatta). Attempting to reach this interface via the above bridged interface resulted in a corrupted page. Wireshark indicated that there was multiple “Broken TCP” packets. A web search revealed that the atl1c driver had/has issues with kernel 2.6.32. Did a pci/device ID check at Elrepo which reported that the atl1e driver was usable. Quick install with … yum install http://elrepo.org/linux/elrepo/el6/x86_64/RPMS/kmod-atl1e-1.0.1.14-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm Blacklisted the atl1c driver… vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-net.conf blacklist atl1c Followed by a reboot. Https page now loads correctly and no broken TCP messages in Wireshark. Also got rid of some ssh issues (garbled decryption). Just a FYI post and to say thanks to Elrepo.

In fact, I believe it includes a lot more, as I found out when troubleshooting a machine that reset during the initial boot due to an oddball graphics configuration. It is possible (using dracut) to build an image that _only_ has the drivers for the machine you're on. > SL 5 and its like used to leave the old > /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/iccfg-* files in place, with the wrong > MAC addresses, which simply needed to be corrected and the network > restarted. I'm always flummoxing the Windows guys when I say I just have to restore the backup to another machine, using a live CD, and everything works :). I've even got some scripts on that CD so it's almost an automatic disaster-recovery. - Bluejay Adametz, CFII, A&P, AA-5B N45210 Definition of Hardware: Part of computer system that can be kicked when broken. I was using Fontmatrix on Fedora. TIA Thank you Kevin for your fast response. I downloaded a fontmatrix-0.6.99-4.r1073.fc12.1.i686.rpm from rpm.pbone.net which gives me these errors upon installation: fontmatrix-0.6.99-4 requireslibpodofo.so.0.6.99 qt47-x11 conflicts with qt-x11 The Fedora 13 version gives me the exact same error while fontmatrix-0.6.99-9.r1073.fc14.i686.rpm gives me: fontmatrix-0.6.99-9.r1073.fc14.i686 requires libicuuc.so.44 fontmatrix-0.6.99-9.r1073.fc14.i686 requires libpython2.7.so.1.0 qt47-x11 conflicts with qt-x11 fontmatrix-0.6.99-9.r1073.fc14.i686 requires libicule.so.44 I tried building Fontmatrix from source and I got the 'qt47-x11 conflicts with qt-x11' error I'd really like to use fontmatrix on SL61. More ideas anyone?
RE: UEFI
Thank you, that page was exactly what I needed. Didn't consider that I might need alternate boot media. Is there any known reason for this? Is it undesirable for some reason to have UEFI available by default? (basically, are there any gotcha's I need to look out for?) I can confirm that the BOOTX64.EFI file is not on the installation media. To get around the issue for now, you might want to try the procedure documented here: http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html-single/Installation_Guide/index.html#Making_Minimal_Boot_Media-UEFI I don't have UEFI-capable hardware, so cannot test myself. THis is basically the same problem as using a backup of one machine to run on another machine. There are potential issues: The biggest one is that the drivers for the disk controllers for the new "target" machine need to be available in the "initrd" file on the old "source" machine or its backup. Anything else can be managed by someone at the console after the system boots successfully. You can do that in advance by looking at the "target" machine's The relevant controller drivers, especially for SCSI controllers, used to be in /etc/modprobe.conf, but that changed with the 6.x releases, and I've not poked the new modprobe structure. > I won't do any customization to the x-server and I'll use the default > drivers that are in the Linux kernel. > The only problem I'm thinking about is when I set up and configure Bind and > meddle with the network settings - don't know how the network interfaces are > loaded or stored on Linux - will the new network card be added as another > interface to the old one or will it use the old interface configuration? SL 5 and its like used to leave the old /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/iccfg-* files in place, with the wrong MAC addresses, which simply needed to be corrected and the network restarted. SL 6 is using this "UUID" setting to identify particular devices consistently, which I've not personally played with. You may need to reset those manually with the "system-config-network" tool, if this is just a one-off job, > Has anyone tried doing this? I know that in theory it should work, but don't > want to fly into this blind. I've done something like it, using a backup based installation, on.. roughly 15,000 servers with different, older Red Hat releases. I've not done it under SL 6, which has re-arranged the module loading and network configuration tools for boot time somewhat. > Cheers and thanks for any input, > Marek

Akemi For the record, Akemi, this (obviously) made it to the list. It made it into the spam folder due to hitting this rule: URIBL_BLACKB Contains an URL listed in the URIBL blacklist [URIs: scientificlinux.org] Somehow I think that was somewhat erroneous of URIBL. {^_^} Thanks for the heads up on the URIBL listing. I have submitter status with URIBL so have requested a delisting. I can confirm it's currently still listed. My delisting request is pending review. Looks like it's fixed now, and listed on the whitelist so it won't get blacklisted by mistake again. BTW, the website is now back up (at least for me). I wonder if the blacklisting at URIBL was a result of the website being down - maybe an automated listing of a domain appearing in mail flow with no corresponding website.

migrating disk with SL 6.1 from one machine to another
I have a single running server that I can't meddle with and another older machine, that can be used for testing purposes. If I install SL 6.1 on my testing machine and configure services that I want to use on it, will it be portable and work when I move the disk and boot from it on my server? I won't do any customization to the x-server and I'll use the default drivers that are in the Linux kernel. The only problem I'm thinking about is when I set up and configure Bind and meddle with the network settings - don't know how the network interfaces are loaded or stored on Linux - will the new network card be added as another interface to the old one or will it use the old interface configuration? Or will it purge the old network settings altogether when it detects that the device is no longer present and another one is in it's place? Has anyone tried doing this? I know that in theory it should work, but don't want to fly into this blind. Cheers and thanks for any input, Marek
