So if you can point me to CGI for my own site, thanks a million.

That we can do. :-)

Here are 36 perl scripts that The CGI Resource Index site lists for
searching your own site:

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/
Searching/Searching_Your_Web_Site/

Note: The above URL is actually one continuous line and should be
entered into your browser's address box as one line.

Some cost money, but most seem to be for free.

Let me suggest that the first one you try is Matt Wright's "Simple
Search". I personally do not have experience with that particular
script, but Matt Wright has a good reputation around the Net and his
scripts are considered very stable and well written for most UNIX
systems.

Yes, but let me distinguish that for which you are seeking. You can
set up a search form for searching for keywords within your own site.
It would be an onsite search engine - allowing visitors to search for
something in a complex web site. You can also place a search engine
for searching the WWW in general. These latter search engines actually
use search engine sites such as AltaVista and others.

In either case, most sites use a CGI script for their search forms.
There may be a javascript onsite search, but I presently am not aware
of such. However, I have seen general WWW search forms that used
javascript to search the web.

Tell us what you want and we will find you scripts. Be aware though,
that working with CGI scripts can be frustrating. That is why offsite
CGI has become popular. With offsite scripts, the searching is done on
your site, but the software or script running the search is located on
a remote server.

I'm a her, and I know cleverness and ingenuity when I see it!

RE:I sure got him or her fooled, huh? BG

Seriously though, as we try to teach on this list, you do not have to
know all the answers -- you just have to know how to find the answers.
The better you get at that, the smarter everyone will think you are.
