[seisan] Registering or changing volcanic sub-types

2024-08-29 Thread Roderick Stewart
Is there any way to register volcanic event subtypes after events have been
registered in a REA database?

EEV doesn’t have the LV options that I get in MULPLT.

[seisan] Errors in SEISAN 12 trying to use miniseed files

2024-08-02 Thread Roderick Stewart

I have compiled SEISAN V12 on Ubuntu 24.04. I increased some array sizes
in seidim.inc to cope with large files. This caused no problems with V12
on Debian.

I can work with seisan format files created by Earthworm, but get memory
errors when I try to work with miniseed files. See below.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

[seisan] VELEST - no stations

2022-01-21 Thread Roderick Stewart
I haven’t used VELEST in a long while.

When I try to use it, using VELMENU, it gives me a warning for every station I
am using, saying it's not found in stationlist. It then reports that all the
events have zero observations.

Any suggestions what I might be doing wrong?

Is it possible to use SELECT to find local (L) events, but not the local

[seisan] AUTOREG crashing

2021-12-24 Thread Roderick Stewart
I need to run AUTOREG on several years of a continuous database. This will take
a long time and I’d like to leave it running while I enjoy my Christmas dinner.

Unfortunately, AUTOREG crashes on some files, presumably corrupt ones. Like
this:

/mnt/mvofls2/Seismic_Data/WAV/DSNC_/2021/11/2021_11_07_0320_
At line 3469 of file wave.for (unit = 77, file =

Fortran runtime error: End of file

Error termination. Backtrace:

This is SEISAN 12 on Debian Linux.

It going to take a long time to fix the problem every time AUTOREG crashes.

Is there any way to run AUTOREG to jump over these presumed corrupt files and
provide a list of files that it would crash on.

[seisan] extracting large amount of data using WAVETOOL

2021-12-23 Thread Roderick Stewart
I want to extract several hours of data from a SEISAN database with WAVETOOL.

I’m using SEISAN version 12 on Debian Linux.

I use this command:

$ wavetool -cwav -start 2021121403000 -duration 8300 -wav_out_file test
-format MSEED

I get error messages saying “Number of maximum samples exceeded”, when I try to
extract 8400 seconds or more of data, most of which is sampled at 200 Hz.

I don’t fully get what the -maxpoints option does, but I don’t think it will
help me.

Can I just change a value in the code and recompile?

[seisan] GMAP and high-accuracy hypocentres

2021-09-15 Thread Roderick Stewart
Can GMAP use the high-accuracy hypocentre in the H line instead of the one in
the first line?

Three decimal places is not enough for my uses and non-seismologists keep
yelling “look, a fault” when the epicentres line up.

Sorry about the flood of questions, I promise this is the last for a while.

[seisan] MULPT - selecting time window with mouse.

2021-09-15 Thread Roderick Stewart
When I’m using mulplt and selecting time windows with the mouse, there are
times when I need to select the very end or the very beginning of the file. For
instance when looking at 20-minute files of continuous data.

It’s very difficult, nay impossible, to try and position the cursor one pixel
away from the window edge.

Is there a way of selecting the end of the window?

[seisan] VOLCSTAT and GMT

2021-09-15 Thread Roderick Stewart
I asked about this a while ago, but didn’t get any comments (I don’t think).

Volcstat (on Linux) keeps crashing on me. It produces output files, but these
have no data for the last couple of days.

The errors are:

gmtset [ERROR]: Unrecognized keyword ANOT_FONT.
gmtset [ERROR]: 1 GMT Defaults conversion errors from command options
gmtset [ERROR]: Unrecognized keyword ANOT_FONT_SIZE.
gmtset [ERROR]: 1 GMT Defaults conversion errors from command options
pshistogram [ERROR]: Cannot specify both fill (-G) and lookup colors (-C).

It appears that these keywords last appeared in GMT version 4. I’m using 6.1.1.

Do I need to downgrade my GMT?

Ignore my comments about high accuracy locations in STATION0.HYP, that wasn’t

I have now tried in both Windows and Linux, with the same result - nothing in

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Re: [seisan] VELEST doesn't recognise stations

2021-04-02 Thread Roderick Stewart
On a hunch, I changed the station locations in STATION0.HYP from high
resolution to normal.

VELMENU now produces a starting location that is almost correct - the longitude
is positive instead of negative.
olat = 13.345
olon = 61.181

But I still get errors from VELEST saying the stations are not in the station
list.

I manually edited olon to be negative, but still got these errors.

Re: [seisan] VELEST doesn't recognise stations

2021-04-02 Thread Roderick Stewart
The reason I had SPEC and 2021 as stations is that I had unlocated events in my
select.out file.

Now my select.out file has only located events, the station list is OK, but
VELEST still says the stations are not in the station list!

Long,

Thanks.

I’m doing what you say but it isn’t working.

I just checked the command file velest.cmn and it doesn’t seem to have
calculated the starting location correctly.
olat and olong are 5.338 and 24.473
my events are all around 13.3 and -61.2

[seisan] VELEST doesn't recognise stations

2021-04-01 Thread Roderick Stewart
Sorry about all the questions, but I’m trying to use almost everything in
SEISAN that I’ve never used before!

I’m trying to use VELEST to invert for a velocity model.

I run it using VELMENU.

It doesn’t do anything because it can’t find any of the stations in the station
list.

The file selstat.lis has all my stations.

It also has SPEC and 2021 listed as stations. I deleted them but it made no
difference.

Any ideas?

2021-03-31 Thread Roderick Stewart
What’s the easiest way to create a high-resolution .grd file for use in MAPG /
GMT?

I’ve been trying to create a file for St Vincent, but all the resources I find
on the web just confuse me.

I’m in a bit of a rush, so would really appreciate some help.

Limits I want are
Lat 13.1 - 13.4
Lon -61.2 -61.0

[seisan] EEV - can't delete an event

2021-03-15 Thread Roderick Stewart
I’ve set up SEISAN on a Windows 10 computer.

I can’t delete events in EEV. The DELET database is not present.

Do I just create the DELET database manually?

Lara,

Thanks.

I didn’t need to do anything. It worked after an unscheduled reboot.

[seisan] changing user in Windows 10

2021-03-10 Thread Roderick Stewart
I installed seisan in Windows 10 and it worked.

I then decided that I didn’t like being a Microsoft account user, so moved to a
local account.

SEISAN doesn’t work under the new account.

Is there a simple fix to this, or do I have to re-install?

William,

Thanks.

I didn’t set up this PC and don’t really want to spend a lot of time learning
about Windows software.

So I did the simplest thing - uninstalled the Anti-Virus software.

I solved it (sorry about the step by step emails).

The McAfee anti-virus software was removing the dirf executable.

I turned off the anti-virus software and everything now works ok.

Re: [seisan] Strange behaviour in Windows 10 mulplt

2021-02-28 Thread Roderick Stewart
I did more testing and discovered that the dirf executable is vanishing from
the PRO directory.

I used the installer to repair seisan and the executable was there.

I ran dirf and the executable was still there.

I ran dirf again and the executable had gone!

I don’t know much about Windows, and this has me totally puzzled.

I just noticed that the DOS commands env and printenv are not recognised as
well.

Something in the system is messed up!

[seisan] VOLCSTAT errors, poss because I'm using GMT 6.1.1

2021-01-06 Thread Roderick Stewart
Continuing with my new install of SEISAN, I am getting errors in volcstat from
GMT functions

gmtset [ERROR]: Unrecognized keyword ANOT_FONT.
gmtset [ERROR]: 1 GMT Defaults conversion errors from command options
gmtset [ERROR]: Unrecognized keyword ANOT_FONT_SIZE.
gmtset [ERROR]: 1 GMT Defaults conversion errors from command options
pshistogram [ERROR]: Cannot specify both fill (-G) and lookup colors (-C).

I think these are because I installed GMT 6.1.1 and some variable names changed
in version 5.

It doesn’t seem to cause problems in what I do, but thought you needed to know.

[seisan] SEISAN setup problem on Linux

2021-01-06 Thread Roderick Stewart
I’m setting up SEISAN on a new Linux PC, copying the setup files from the old
PC.

I get an error when I try to register an event in MULPLT (see below).

I can’t for the life of me find where the setup is wrong.

Any suggestions?

this is the end of stdout from MULPLT when I register the event

Re: [seisan] Error compiling SEISAN on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-08-31 Thread Roderick Stewart
Daer Felix,

Thanks for the information.

I have now managed to compile it, but I'm not sure why or how.

Instead of installing an older fortran, I tried some of the -std= options.
These worked, then they didn't work, then I managed to compile it without a
-std= option!

The only problem after that was that it couldn't find libgfortran.so.3.

I found a suggestion on the web to extract the library then just copy it
manually to /usr/local/lib.

Suddenly it works!

I haven't tested it fully yet, as I have no GUI at the moment (working from
home).

Will test more tomorrow.

Many thanks,

Rod

[seisan] eev and RESP response files

2020-06-13 Thread Roderick Stewart
I added some new stations and put the RESP files in the CAL directory.

I’m running Seisan 11 on Linux. When I try to use the response files, say
calculating a Wood-Anderson waveform, MULPLT will use them happily. But when I
use EEV to run MULPLT, it says the response files are not found.

On a different computer, running Seisan 9.1 on Linux, EEV will find and use the
response files.

Did I miss something in the settings?

It might be that your location code is — and not 00.

If it is, the file name has to use —.

Good luck.

[seisan] SPEC output to file (Linux)

2020-05-06 Thread Roderick Stewart
The SPEC program does exactly what I want.

But how, on Linux, can I send the individual plots to files instead of to a
printer?

It only saves the final plot, which is the only one I don’t want.

I did some googling, and found instructions to add a PDF printer to CUPS, but
this is an old PC which will soon become obsolete and I don’t want to update
the system.

[seisan] Plotting a stack of signals from one station

2020-02-10 Thread Roderick Stewart
Is there a way in SEISAN to plot multiple traces from a single station for many
different earthquakes?

I would like to line up the signals using the picked P arrival time.

[seisan] VOLCSTAT problem

2019-12-30 Thread Roderick Stewart
I have just encountered a problem with volcstat which is puzzling me as I’ve
never seen it before despite volcstat being a cornerstone of MVO’s monitoring.

I’m running Seisan 11.0 on Linux.

Below is the tail of the output from a run of volcstat, along with the tail of
the daily counts of VT earthquakes.

The counts have missed the one VT earthquake on 28 December.

When I first noticed the problem earlier today, the counts also missed all 9 VT
earthquakes on 25 December.

Help!

[seisan] corrupt event seen in EEV

2019-12-06 Thread Roderick Stewart
When I use EEV, I have an event that seems to have been corrupted. It is in the
wrong place date-wise, and has no I line.

I just want to delete it, but the D command won’t let me. It says “Event not
present in S-file data base” and gives a file name for a different event.

How can I delete the event?

[seisan] Guralp response files

2019-10-14 Thread Roderick Stewart
I am having problems creating useable instrument response files for Guralp
Minimus-based seismographs

I can download a dataless seed file from each station, and also a response file
for each channel which has a first line:
# << Guralp SEED response file builder v1.2-8700 >>

But I am unable to create a response file that SEISAN can use.

Part of my problem is that I am unfamiliar with the various software I can use.

Another problem is that I use different station, network and channel codes from
the ones coded in the Minimus.

Any suggestions on the easiest way to get the response files I need would be
very welcome.

[seisan] picking particle motions

2019-10-13 Thread Roderick Stewart
Sorry for all the questions, but after umpteen years using SEISAN, I’m suddenly
trying new things!

I want to use particle motions of P in locations for very local earthquakes,
with S-P of 2-4 seconds and signals up to 10Hz.

When I toggle to the single-channel picking mode, SEISAN shows the entire
waveform. This makes it very difficult to pick the window for the particle
motion and very very difficult to pick the P arrival.

Is there any way to zoom in the upper window when using the single channel
picking mode?

[seisan] Predicting teleseismic waves for catalogues

2019-10-11 Thread Roderick Stewart
This isn’t really SEISAN related, but I hope someone can help me.

(It’s so long since I did global seismology that I seem to have forgotten
everything I knew about it.)

Is there a software or a web resource which can take a catalogue of earthquakes
(eg IRIS or USGS) and predict all the arrival times at one station.

The USGS web pages used to do this, but I can’t find it any more.

Any help appreciated.

A quick follow up question.

When I register an event (from MULPLT), how do I get it to move the WAV file to
a /mm structure?

At the moment, it just goes in WAV/WHATEVER

[seisan] SEISAN default database Windows 10

2019-09-24 Thread Roderick Stewart
I continue to have problems with Windows 10 SEISAN.

I have two questions.

Any suggestions welcome. Even if you just point to the page in the manual.

1)

I’d like my default data base, my WAV and REA directories, to be on another
disk, E:

But I can’t see how to set this up in the SEISAN.DEF file.

And I can’t work it out from the manual.

2)

I have the continuous data in E: in a /MM structure.

The manual says I have to use AUTOREG to create S-files.

But I can’t work out how to do this.

[seisan] Installing SEISAN on Windows 10

2019-09-20 Thread Roderick Stewart
I have a problem with SEISAN on Windows 10.

The install went smoothly.

But when I use cmd.exe, it does not recognise any SEISAN commands.

cmd.exe seems to assume a different user than the one I installed SEISAN under.

It’s not my computer!

It has two user accounts.

I googled to find out if I can switch user in cmd.exe, but it doesn’t seem
possible.

Any ideas?

Re: [seisan] compiling seisan on macos Mojave

2019-08-29 Thread Roderick Stewart
Lars,

Many thanks.

This is not a priority thing for me as I am running SEISAN on a virtual Linux
machine on my Mac.

I copied your file to LIB and I also updated my X11 Quartz installation.

I got lots of warnings and one error - the tail of the output is:

Haa anyone had success compiling seisan on Macos Mojave?

I get lots of warnings about Fortran 2018 deleted features and then errors

The end of the output is below.
