It looks like the info JC posted should be a great deal of help for your diag. The plastic elbow at the brake booster is indeed a check valve. One symptom of a bad check valve is the immediate loss of brake assist when you shut down the engine. There should be 2-3 brake applications before you loose the assist and the pedal goes hard.
