I'd say that is a straw man, except that definitions of libertarianism are all

At least in my book, I don't see anything fundamentally libertarian about

Did not understand your point. Are you agreeing with me?

If Stephen King wants to give his money away, he has every right to. If he
says, As I want to give my money away, I want to force every person who makes
more than a certain amount of money to also give his money away, no, I don't
think he has a right to. Do I think he is within his rights to advocate to the
rich that they should give their money away -- yes, I think he has every right
to. Do I think he has a right to force them to -- no, I don't.

Do I think it is unfair that the rich pay less in taxes than the non-rich --
yes, I do. Do I think the rich should have to pay more taxes as a percentage
of their earnings than I do -- no, I don't.

Do I support a simple flat tax rate for everybody (assuming that's what King
meant by the phrase tax equality near the end of the article) -- yes, I do.
Do I know how much I pay in taxes -- no, I don't.

*Our son didn’t deserve to die*. Richard was just 19 years old and studying

of April 17th, *his head was smashed by two students* from his hostel.

What makes his death so much harder is knowing that we were only informed

the accused Vishal Banerjee (1st year B. Arch student) and Syed Afzal Ali

Witnesses have revealed that Syed Afzal Ali repeatedly hit Richard’s head

support this. However, the college authorities are trying to cover up by
linking our son's death to a minor accident he had a few days before and
drug abuse which is clearly an attempt to defame our loving son.

It may also be because of the slow legal response and the fact that the
institution appeared to try and brush it under the carpet. If the rest of the

Again, Aleph’s ambitions have been very carefully thought through. In our
view there are many areas in the Indian writing and trade publishing scene
that have not been exploited in any significant way. For example, while we
have world class novelists we have too few great books of history, science,
politics, sociology, travel, narrative non-fiction and biography to name
just some of the areas that we are looking to target. In these categories
you might have books that are first rate in terms of scholarship, but as
these are generally aimed at academics they are largely unreadable where
the lay reader is concerned. Books that are available to general readers
are sometimes readable, but are singularly lacking in depth or nuance. So,
we see a great deal of opportunity in terms of books that we can publish.
What we intend to do is actively commission writers to produce great books
in some of these subject areas.

The boy apparently had a head injury from an accident a couple of days prior

From a medical standpoint bleeding from the ears could be a sign of what is

Here is a more detailed report
http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_why-did-richard-loitam-die-too-many-
versions-out-there_1682924

The police on Sunday claimed that the scuffle between Loitam and a hostel mate
had been over the very two-wheeler on which Loitam had met with an accident
earlier. Soon after his death, it had been reported in the media that the two
had fought over watching an IPL match on television.
SP (Bangalore Rural) D Prakash told journalists that Loitam and his friend
Vishal Banerjee had fought over a scooty on the night of April 17.They were
said to have chipped in money to buy the vehicle.
Prakash said the quarrel took place in the hostel at 8.30 pm. The previous day
(April 16), Loitam—a student of Acharya NRV School of Architecture—had taken
the vehicle out with his friend Spoorthy Ranjan. They met with an accident
near Saptagiri Hospital. After receiving treatment for injuries, the two
returned to the hostel.

Banerjee was furious when he saw the damaged vehicle. He met Loitam in the
hostel, and asked him why he took the vehicle out when his driving skills were
poor.
The two had heated arguments and Loitam reportedly grabbed Banerjee. The
latter's friend Syed Afjal Ali came to his rescue and punched Loitam hard in
the face, causing immediate injury to his left eye. Other students Vishesh
Gupta, Shreyas Shetty and Mishal Mustafa intervened and pulled them apart.
Loitam returned to his room 225 and reportedly told his roommates Nikhil and
Sourabh that doctors had advised him a week's rest and that he would not
attend classes the next few days. He went to sleep at 11.30 pm. His roommates
found him dead on April 18, and alerted the hostel supervisor Sudhakar, who
called the police.
In his complaint with the police, Sudhakar said Loitam died either due to the
injuries he suffered in the road accident, or from the punches he received from
Ali.

Thanks for the interesting input.

But if a chap falls off a scooter and is injured and has a head injury, I think
the hospital should have registered it as a medicolegal case simply because
these things happen.

I am guessing that a casualty medical officer would have faced a dilemma over a
chap who just fell off a scooter and had some injuries and thought why not give
him first aid and send him home. But the problem is that the doctor knows only
the patient's side of the story and perhaps needs to be more suspicious. What
if the case was actually a hit and run where this guy had hit someone? A
higher index of paranoia in ostensible accidents is always useful.

I have actually seen stab injuries where the victim claimed that she fell on a
knife because she did not want the stabber, her husband, to be implicated. The
safest thing is to register a medicolegal case.

If the head injury was severe enough to require rest for a week, it means that
there was a de facto traffic offence for Bangalore - the guy is unlikely to
have
had a face/head injury if he was wearing a helmet. Besides if he had to res in
bed for a week why was he out in the common room fighting over a TV remote
control (as some reports say)

That probably precedes Joy by a few decades :) Thanks, and yes, that's the one.

That's a tough call. They probably should have because accidents need to be
registered as a medico-legal case per se. The examining physician will have no
clue as to how the accident occurred. It could well have been because some
other driver breached a traffic rule and cut the vicitm off causing the victim
to lose balance. Or that the metro construction company negligently left debris
or construction material lying around which caused the victim to swerve and
lose balance (happened to a friend in law school who died on the spot).

But in reality doctors tend to be a little softer on out-of-town students
knowing that these students don't want the rigmarole of a police investigation.
But I agree with you that a bad head injury ought to be reported to the cops.
Though unless the patient is lying unconscious in the hospital, it rarely
happens.

That makes for an interesting analysis on the law of murder. If his prior

Tragic as the incident is, I found the whole NE spin on it very bizzare.
Can't the case just stand on the basis of being a mere murder?

Minorities feel embattled, and in times of crisis these insecurities
 emerge.

While that would be understandable, watching the news last night it (the NE
spin) appeared more a creation of the media rather than the result of any
mass banding together of aggrieved minorities.

Why, you say this with shock, like the Indian media has a track record
of usually behaving as a rational actor.

What is it you are asking?

Richard was killed by two imbeciles for an unbearably stupid reason; there is a
growing movement demanding justice and fair play, though the authorities have
been tap-dancing around it.

I don't know if this is a genuine petition.

 Help Our Son Get Justice

 Email the Commissioner
 Mahesh -

Our son didn’t deserve to die. Richard was just 19 years old and studying at
Archarya NRV School of Architecture in Bangalore (India). On the night of
April 17th, his head was smashed by two students from his hostel.

What makes his death so much harder is knowing that we were only informed by
the college authority about our son's death the next day at 3.30 pm and the
accused Vishal Banerjee (1st year B. Arch student) and Syed Afzal Ali (1st
year MBA student), who brutally killed him are still not arrested.

But we hope for justice. We have started a petition asking the Police
Commissioner of Bangalore, B. Jyoti Mirji to arrest the accused and file
 charges against them.

Witnesses have revealed that Syed Afzal Ali repeatedly hit Richard’s head and
face. The photographic images and preliminary post-mortem report also support
this. However, the college authorities are trying to cover up by linking our
son's death to a minor accident he had a few days before and drug abuse which
is clearly an attempt to defame our loving son.

The support that everyone has shown by organizing protests gives us strength
 to stand our ground.

CNN-IBN and other news agencies have already reported on the issue, but we
need to put more pressure on the Police Commissioner to arrest the accused
 and put them on trial.

Even though the accused have been booked for murder, they havent been
arrested yet. Two weeks have passed, and we are still demanding a fair and
 transparent investigation.

Please help us in getting justice for our son, Richard - we will be very
 grateful for your support.

 Thank you,
Dr. L Rajesh (Loitam Richard's father)
Dr. RK Vidyabali Devi (Loitam Richard's mother)
