[silk] Hello!

Hi everyone!
I've heard a lot about this list and am very pleased to join.
My name is Ameya (uh-MEY-a for those who would like to know). I am an
editor, podcaster and occasional writer with a fabulous ability to herd
cats :D This might have something to do with the two I have, who frequently
need herding.
I am known for my love of good puns (delighted to argue about that
definition any time), and interest in learning languages. I speak fluent
Spanish and dabble in many more. I love arguing to better understand my
position and that of the other person, but the goal is not conversion. I am
fascinated by people and patterns, and like few things more than (potatoes
and) sitting around watching people, heardin stories of people and
formulating theories of how and why they think and do what they think and
do.
I am from Hyderabad, but live in Delhi (dil se dilliwali hoon, as I like to
say). I like to cook and can usually be found reading SOMETHING--ketchup
bottles will do at a pinch. I have degrees in English, Latin American
Studies and Business Administration, and cohost a podcast
.
I shall you all in discussions!

Re: [silk] Hello

2021-05-21 Thread sur...@hserus.net
The fun (or not so fun) part about Daikin five stars, having bought 4 for my
apartment back in 2012, is that while they perform, they perform like champs.
However if something goes wrong, they cannot be “serviced” as such – main board
replacement is the usual thing. The older, cheaper models can usually get
their boards repaired locally.

The other part is they are extraordinarily sensitive to power fluctuations.
The old fashioned two or three star ones with copper coils are not energy
efficient, but they cool a lot better and are a lot cheaper to maintain when
they go wrong. Whether that is offset by power bill savings is something to be
determined, we wouldn’t use all the ACs to the extent that they’d be used in a
factory.

Not sure I've scanned the full list. I have Daikin 5-star efficiency ACs (1.5t
and 2.0t).

The other energy efficiency thing is to circulate the air better, and hold the
temperature of the air conditioner than one would otherwise do.

We have been using Airzon BLDC fans in our (Green Evolution's) residential and
institutional projects since 2017. These fans are extremely energy efficient -
about 32W at highest speed when compared to over 50W for 5 Star rated
conventional fans. Our clients are very happy with these fans.

Old ceiling fans can be sold for scrap (metal scrap dealer) for which you'll

Holding on to the old stuff bleeds energy.  The energy savings is enough to pay

Re: [silk] Hello

2021-04-27 Thread ram612
Hi Huda,

Thank you, and it's good to hear from you. A few things I've done:

1. Replaced all devices at home with the most energy efficient ones available
after doing an audit of our electricity consumption - replaced existing fans
with BLDC fans, all lights are LED/CFL, and all refrigerators and air
conditioners are the most energy efficient.
2. Made the size of the backup inverter and batteries 50% of what they were
earlier - goal is to cut waste. I redeployed the old inverter and excess
batteries to a different location.
3. Off-grid solar for all electricity consumption other than high power
devices like air conditioners, induction stoves and pumps.

I want to go on-grid solar for all consumption relating to (2) above. Haven't
done it yet because net metering is hard to get here in the state of Tamil Nadu
- serious bottlenecks and disincentives for adoption. I hope to get it down
once the lockdowns ease off.

The goal is to have all electricity consumption at home from non-fossil
sources.

For water, we have an elaborate systems of catchment on the roof that lead to
rainwater pits which we recirculate back for garden use. I have a lot more to
think about in terms of treatment and reuse of grey water ...

Best,
Ram

Welcome to the list Shreyasee! From a lurker who (ashamedly) only rarely
does more than appreciate the discussions of the list from afar, we have
some excellent fantasy (though the last one I think was non-fictional)
book recommendation discussions that rise up. Admittedly, it seems that
the science fiction ones are those that come to mind, but that might be
a personal bias.

I know Temple University well; a friend (just) received her doctorate in
neuroscience in your Psych department, and I spent a few weeks back in
August with your Biostats department before moving back to New Haven.
Admittedly, I never really came to understand how Philly was cheaper,
but then again I may have always been fixated upon attempting to
navigate the public transportation there. The NYC MTA always seemed so
logical in comparison.

[silk] Hello from Shreyasee

2020-05-18 Thread Shreyasee Das
Good afternoon folks,

Shreyasee (pronounced “sray-o-she”) here, the newest “find” of Udhay. Udhay
said I owed all of you an introduction, and to be honest it makes me
nervous every time someone asks me to do this. Among many other things, I
never know what level of information is the most optimal, but here’s me
trying my best to accomplish this.

You may be wondering why the *afternoon*? I currently reside in
Philadelphia the city that’s supposed to be “always sunny” (it’s
approximately 1:45 PM here). Philly is often also known as the cheaper New
York, my bank balance often appreciates this description. Why am I in
Philly? I am an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Economics at Temple
University. Prior to that, I was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, one of the campuses under the
University of Wisconsin System. I got my Doctoral degree, my Master degree,
my Bachelor degree, all in Economics, all at the University of Houston.

My dissertation was on water allocation rules (for example, the Krishna
Basin allocation rules) and how it impacted agricultural output in the
region. I’ve since moved away but have been trying to come back to access
to water and tying it with my current research interests. Currently, my
main theme of interest is Gender Economics, more specifically, women’s
access to property in India and how it could be a mechanism to empower
them. Working on this topic has introduced me to the many pitfalls of
Economics, the most important being the lack of intersectionality in how we
conduct our work. This is something that I strive to improve upon in my own
work, both scholarly work and pedagogically.

Who am I outside of the above? In no particular order of timeline:

Home for me is Hyderabad. I visit every year, sometimes twice a year. This
year is a whole different story. I did one year of high school (12thgrade)
in the US (in a small town – Lubbock, Texas, home of Buddy Holly) and that
was a culture shock, to say the least. I’ve dabbled in dance and want to
get back to it as soon as I can. I’ve forgotten a lot of my training and
really do want to master the art form again. I haven’t read works of
fiction since 3rd year of grad school, and this is the year to fix that, or
so I claim.

I’ll stop here.

I look forward to engaging with all of you, virtually and face-to-face
(when the opportune moment arises)

Hello all,

This is Rahul. Thanks, Udhay, for inviting me to this list. I know Udhay
from the online world, through another mailing list with allusions to
sheer, soft textiles.

I'm a computer scientist/engineer based in Boston/Cambridge. I work on a
broad swath of systems ranging from wired and wireless networks up from the
signal layer to server side and distributed systems. I've been orbiting
academia for years as a graduate student, and working on startups based on
my academic work. After all, what's entrepreneurship but a $10 word saying
that you can't find anybody willing to employ you?

Work tends to be all consuming most days - yeah, I'm boring, I know - but
if I had my druthers, I'd rather be bike riding through the back country or
hiking up in New Hampshire.

Look forward to listening to all you people here on the list, and hope I
can contribute!

[silk] Hello silklist

2017-10-12 Thread Peter Griffin
Hi All

(This feels like the first day of school)

Thanks for inviting me in, Udhay.

I intend to be mostly a quiet reader and observer until I get a feel
of the etiquette of the list.

Meanwhile, the quick About Me:

I'm very fortunate with my friends. And thanks to the work I have done
and my own limitations, I know a little about lots of things, but not
very much about any single thing,

The longer version:

I've mostly earned my living as a writer of some kind, mainly in
advertising, content creation, and journalism. I currently work with a
newspaper, where I edit and commission more than write. Unpaid writing
includes blogging and poetry.

I have been a literary curator, and am an informal student of online
culture and collaboration (and have been fortunate to be part of some
cool collectives). I co-founded the writing forum Caferati and
moderate its various web presences. And I advise a couple of
non-profits and help others when I can.

I recently got back to dabbling in sculpture (chalk, and now clay); if
you know me on social media, I am likely to bore you to tears with
lots of pictures of those or, even more likely, to send you off
groaning with awful puns.I solemnly promise not to do the former here.

Welcome Advaith! Happy Silking... My short tryst with the Bangalore music
scene came about around 6 years ago when I was consulting for and launched
a project called Kyra Theatre in Bangalore... brilliant concept that didn't
last long for various reasons, which I won't go in to right now.
Today, my music scene is completely influenced by suggestions and moods of
my musically-inclined 14 year old daughter! :)

@Deepa - That particular clip is from a time when I thought that music gets
better with increasing complexity. That has definitely changed, and
hopefully new material will be more coherent :D

[silk] Hello From Advaith

2016-08-09 Thread Advaith Mohan
Hi everyone,

This is my first day on Silk, and I'm quite excited to be a part of it's
continuing tradition. I'm just writing down a little bit about my life so
far to give you guys some context.

I have existed in my current form on this planet for the last 26 years.
Growing up in Trivandrum, I subsisted on a regular diet of rice, fish
curry, books, and quizzes. At the age of 15, I decided to give music a shot
and found my first true love in my (Pluto) guitar. Over the next 7 years, I
managed to balance my love of (supposedly) engineering, quizzing, and music
, and graduated from IIT Madras (barely) having mostly learnt very little
engineering and a lot of music and random trivia. The next 3 years were
spent roaming around the hallways of Flipkart supposedly doing marketing.
Simultaneously, I joined a metal band called The Down Troddence
 in Bangalore, and released an
album with them in 2014 (working
on the next one currently). After deciding last year that my calling in
life lay somewhat far away from e-commerce, I resigned and have been
working on building a product called Wagr to make
dog-parenting easier (I adopted a puppy while I was working, and went
through hell taking care of it alone). I met Udhay at Axilor where we were
being accelerated over the last 3 months :)

I'm currently also working on another long term project. It's a musical
interpretation of Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, set in a post modern context.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this. We're still ideating the exact
structure of the project.

Apart from the music and Wagr, I spent the rest of my time reading as much
as possible on the subjects of AI, consciousness, and reality (quite
convinced that we are pretty much in a simulation)

Really looking forward to taking part in all the discussions here!

PS - You can find some of the other music I've worked on here
 and here
.

Cheers,
  Advaith Mohan

Amit - many thanks, will definitely mail/DM you when I'm in Bombay, which

Narendra - I enjoyed reading through your blog, especially the piece about

Thaths - I'm using Medium to publish netadata.in - I think of it as a quick
fix for now. Easy to find an audience, easy interface, classy design. Hard
to monetise though, but I'm going to think of a different CMS/platform only
comes when I'm in a position to pay people!

Venky - yes we might have met! I'm quite interested in how the India Stack
is built (having just seen Nandan Nilekani's address on it at Microsoft

The same could be said about the US and UK TV news channels (except for
outliers like public broadcasters). I suspect TV news channels (and
newspapers, coming to think of it) that want to appeal to a broad audience
have to appeal to the least common denominator.

I have started noticing that Indians have began to realize the baits and
traps that "breaking news" channels lay in their path.

Thanks. Sadly I'm not regular, mostly just use it as a dump for whatever I
write on MSM, though I keep intending to resume, but Twitter and FB have

Re: [silk] Hello (intro)

2016-08-03 Thread Venkatesh H R
Venkat, asking those sort of questions usually sets me off on a rant :)
maybe a separate thread on that. But for now:
1. News in channels is usually selected on - stories in newspapers, events
and the competition. There's a lot of emphasis on at least one 'breaking
news' story in every 'news wheel' which is basically every 15 minutes.
Basically that puts a lot of pressure on reporters to 'break' stories and
'own the story' and 'drive the conversation'. I can go on and on, but the
bottomline is: incentives for everybody are so skewed that the stuff that
comes out is utter horse shit.
2. There's a lot of pressure to ensure people stick to the channel. The
only way to do that is to pull an Arnab. most anchors can't (and won't) do
that). only news x is trying to use that template. The rest of the channels
are flailing about. They are so ripe for content disruption right now.
3. I was numbed because as an anchor I was required to do al of the above
and more. What really killed it for me was 26/11 when we were required to
sustain non-stop coverage of the attacks for 48 hours, without breaks. So
we took turns as anchors, basically saying the same thing over and over
again. 2008 was really when things got worse. Reporting was cut short.
People realised it is cheapest to call 4 guests to a studio and have a
shouting match. I can go on and on
Anyway, there are a lot of great people in tv still, and who knows, change
might be round the corner.

Amit - hello! I should tell you - your blog was responsible for sparking my
interest in economics, Lee Child and James Elroy, and much more. Still
occasionally pop in to read it.

Not that I don't watch content made for TV. The Wire[1] is one series I was

Movies and games also keep me in the front of the TV.

Welcome, John!

Why is it not red in color? :-) Awesome truck though.

Studies have shown that yellowish-green vehicles are more visible than red
ones. However, most fire departments in the US still use red. For example,
there are six towns on the island of Martha's Vineyard and six fire
departments (although some of them are tiny, with only a handful of
firefighters). Tisbury's trucks are green. All five other departments have
 red trucks.

I've grown up with red fire trucks and white + other colours ambulances,
that seeing florescent yellow ones in the UK made me wonder if someone took
highlighter pens to them...

Barak Obama family vacation here.
Bill Clinton family regularly vacationed here. Bill still comes in
the summer to play golf.

Keith Richard visits from time to time. The Stones vacationed here.
Singer Carly Simon her ex-husband James Taylor live here; their
children went to school here.
(Carly's brother Peter, photographer of rock stars, is a friend of
mine. He has a small gallery here.)

Many American movie stars and sports stars have summer homes here.
It's famous also for having been the pre-eminent vacation spot for
the African-American intelligensia.
The novel Moby Dick is a about a bunch of whalers from Martha's
Vineyard our sister island Nantucket (12 miles away)

Jackie Onasis owned a mansion here when she was alive.
Many of the original cast members of the TV show Saturday Night
Live have summer places here, and John Belushi's widow, long since
remarried, lives here.
Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist Geraldine Brooks and her Pultizer-
Prize winning husband live here; they're friends of ours.

Historian David McCollough lives here.
And yes, JFKjr's plane did go into the sea five miles south of here;
he was en route to a Martha's Vineyard wedding.

And so on.
Although Martha's Vineyard is known for rich and famous people, most
of them are seasonal residents or summer people. The year-round
population is not especially well-to-do; in fact it's the second-
poorest county in Massachusetts. There is a large population of
Portuguese-speaking immigrants from Brazil. Many of these people
don't speak English and are not here legally. However, since the
Great Recession started in 2008, many of them have returned to Brazil
since work is so much harder to find these days.

In one sense, yes. The island is about 100 square miles, most of it
rural. In the part where Obama goes, there is only one road, which
the Secret Service guards. There are 4 main harbors that can be
easily watched -- each one has a harbormaster that monitors every
boat that comes in -- and one small airport (with a paved runway long
enough to handle the president's jet, however). So in that sense, the
island is probably pretty easy to secure.

(In the banks on Martha's Vineyard there is no protective glass
between patrons and tellers. Nobody would rob a bank here because
there's no way to get off the island undetected. Police would just
watch the ferries and harbors and airport.)

ON THE OTHER HAND,

If some Mumbai or 911 type terrorists wanted to take the island
hostage, it would be pretty easy to do. Three passenger ferries 2
freight ferries transport about 95% of people and goods. In the
summer, our population goes from about 15,000 to 120,000. If bad
guys took over the ferries, nobody would leave unless they had a
private boat or airplane. As a novelist, I've thought of all kinds of
bad scenarios that determined bad guys could pull off.

The President, of course, is well protected. About a week before he
comes the big airplanes start flying in unloading all kinds of
miliatry and command gear. When he goes about the island to play golf
or get an ice cream cone, there are secret service guys all over the
place. The President family arrive by hellicopter. That helicopter
flies in a formation of about 10 other helicopters, and the formation
flies right over my house. The windows shake, the walls shake, the
earth shakes.

I've met Carly a few times, even been to dinner at her house. One of
the construction jobs I did was helping to put a few small additions
onto her house -- which is charming, not overly large or
ostentatious. She does have a barn converted into a recording studio,
but I have not seen the inside of that. She has another small barn
that she's converted into a kind of reception hall, and there I saw
her sing backup, along with Kate Taylor, in a pickup band of local
musicians who also happened to be tradesmen who had worked on her
housed. Yes, a private concert at Carly's house, for an audience of
about 50 people, all of us construction workers ( spouses, etc).

She's nice.

Attached, photo taken of me by her brother Peter after a fire near
his studio on Main Street, Vineyard Haven.

Being an island does provide a kind of moat that protects us from
some of the less desirable parts of life in the modern world. In
fact, when we go off-island --45 minutes away, by ferry, we say
we're going to America.

It is nice to have rich seasonal people whose property we can tax to
help pay for our schools and fire trucks, etc. But Martha's
Vineyarders, us year-round people are not generally wealthy. There is

Tisbury 651, the fire truck I'm assigned to, did cost $850,000.
However, in the USA such things pay for themselves. There are
national standards for what kind of firefighting equipment a town
needs to have, and if your town doesn't meet the standards, then by
law you pay a higher rate fore home owner insurance. So, you can
either pay the money and get protection from a well-equiped and
trained fire department, or you can spend the same amount of money in
higher premiums for fire insurance.

Here's a an article about a nasty fire on Main Street in my town a
