Why does Martha's Vineyard ring such a loud bell in my mind? It is
famous for
something.

Barak Obama & family vacation here.
Bill Clinton & family regularly vacationed here. Bill still comes in the summer to play golf.
Keith Richard visits from time to time. The Stones vacationed here.
Singer Carly Simon & her ex-husband James Taylor live here; their children went to school here. (Carly's brother Peter, photographer of rock stars, is a friend of mine. He has a small gallery here.)
Many American movie stars and sports stars have summer homes here.
It's famous also for having been the pre-eminent vacation spot for the African-American intelligensia. The novel Moby Dick is a about a bunch of whalers from Martha's Vineyard & our "sister island" Nantucket (12 miles away)
Jackie Onasis owned a mansion here when she was alive.
Many of the original cast members of the TV show "Saturday Night Live" have summer places here, and John Belushi's widow, long since remarried, lives here. Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist Geraldine Brooks and her Pultizer- Prize winning husband live here; they're friends of ours.
Historian David McCollough lives here.
And yes, JFKjr's plane did go into the sea five miles south of here; he was en route to a Martha's Vineyard wedding.
And so on.
Although Martha's Vineyard is known for rich and famous people, most of them are "seasonal residents" or "summer people". The year-round population is not especially well-to-do; in fact it's the second- poorest county in Massachusetts. There is a large population of Portuguese-speaking immigrants from Brazil. Many of these people don't speak English and are not here legally. However, since the Great Recession started in 2008, many of them have returned to Brazil since work is so much harder to find these days.
