Title: RE: [SLUG] ISA Server 2000

Hey,

I am not 100% sure, but I think it is something to do with the authentication of your box to the ISA2k server.

I suspect that they have disabled the 'guest' account on the ISA box/domain, therefore stopping you from websurfing.  Or they havnt allowed the guest account to access the proxy.

Cheers,
Steve

The point he might have been trying to make is your 'tough love' was
unneccessary. There are better approaches in regards to alerting
somebody of a problem than attacking them.

Somebody could have just as easily attacked your posts. EG:

'Hey.. that bloke didn't wrap his lines in his original email and is
top-posting in this one! Who's he to give advice? _I'm_ going to tell him
he should go back to high school and do his computer classes again and

[SLUG] Linux Australia - halfway through 2003

2003-07-23 Thread Stewart Smith
 23rd January - 23rd July

We've made a lot of progress this year, and it couldn't have happenned
without the combined efforts of everyone involved with Linux Australia.
So a big thanks goes out to you all - Linux community rocks! This mail
is just a summary of some of the things that have happened. Please feel
free to post feedback, comments (and compliments) to the list!

More details and the complete report can be seen at
http://www.linux.org.au/projects/200307report/

General Organisation
-
 Committee Meeting in Sydney
- In the first face to face committee meeting since LCA2003, the LA
committee went through a lot. Andrew Cowie guided us through
"Organisation Strategic Planning"
(http://www.linux.org.au/projects/200307report/org.html) to help us
work out where LA is, what it's role should be and how we should go on
acheiving it.

 Constitution
- We also reveiwed the LA constitution, and have put up some proposed
changes (http://linux.org.au/org/new/constitution.phtml). Comments and
discussion are encouraged!

  LA in media (http://www.linux.org.au/press/)
- We've been mentioned in many publications such as: ZDNet,
AustralianIT, The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, LinuxCare and the fine
LinMagAU. Check our website for URLs of the articles.

Projects

LCA2004 (http://lca2004.linux.org.au/):
'Past & Present' Meeting in Adelaide
- The team from LCA2003 met with the LCA2004 organisers and everything
is on track for a great 2004 conference.

  OLS/LCA Best Speaker award/exchange
- Tridge has arranged with the Ottawa Linux Symposium
(http://www.linuxsymposium.org/2003/) for an exchange of best speakers.
That is, the best speaker from OLS will be funded to come and speak at
LCA, and the best speaker from LCA will be funded to go and talk at
OLS. This should be great for both conferences!

  Grants Scheme (http://www.linux.org.au/projects/grants/)
- We've been able to financially help the GNOME project and LinMagAU.
GNOME with the purchase of a HP machine to help the GNOME port on HP-UX
and PA-RISC Linux and LinMagAU with day-to-day expenses.

  LUG Mailing List
- Many LUGs are now able to collaborate and discuss projects and issues
and are doing so.

Achievments
--
User Group Listing:
- has been updated and now has current contact details - see
http://www.linux.org.au/usergroups/

Setup TWiki:
- Great for collaboration between committee members and relationship
building with both Community and corporate organisations.

Successful fortnightly Committee meetings:
- Accelerated resolution of many issues
- Teleconferencing is flexible enough to cope with odd weeks
- Sometimes supplemented with IRC
Fiscal responsibility
--
- Spent money purposefully (no stagnation, no squandering)
- Documented everything thoroughly
- Carefully limited exposure and risks throughout
Ongoing Advocacy in Edu & Govt
-
- Individual members of the committee have been personally involved in
advocacy as well as encouraging others to do so.

Mailing Lists
--
- committee (813+ messages)
- linux-aus (880+ messages)
- lug list (new, and already 51+)
- web-team (69+ messages)
- ALLIES Mailing list (est jan, 353+)
- and on top of that there's been over 140 purely private mails
regarding LA business (in my mail boxes at least).

Upcoming
--
- credit card handling for donations to community & free software
groups (e.g. Samba, Debian)
- Certification (LPI & RedHat)
- LUG resources Site
- Standard AGM Procedure
- Website improvements
- Pia has been Invited to Brazil FOSS Conference to present about Linux
In Australia
- Coordination of Mass CD Duplication for User Groups
- Benefits for the community from vendors (TBA soon)

A Special Thank you to:
- All ctte members
- All those on lists
- The entire Linux and Open Source community
- IBM for teleconference facility used for fortnightly meetings and the
time of Hugh & Tridge

Remember, check out http://www.linux.org.au/projects/200307report/ for
details,

Maybe you should set your email client (Microsoft Outlook Express as I
see it, I see no reason why you are telling this person off for using
Hotmail) to only show text messages, not HTML.

It is really better to guide people, and tell them that, rather than
taking it tough on them. Remember, we all start somewhere...

[SLUG] Linux, ACCC, SCO et al

2003-07-23 Thread Stuart Guthrie
For those of you who don't go to http://www.slashdot.org, there is a
story about Open Source Victoria complaining to the ACCC about SCO. What
a crak.

Though one of the comments on /.was great. If you're old enough to know
the 'bruce' sketch from Monty Python.

Bruce: Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce a chap from across the pond
who's going to be joining us here at the 'Straylian LUG.
Bruces: G'day!
Darl McBride: Hello.
Bruce: Darl McBride, Bruce. Darl McBride, Bruce. Darl McBride, Bruce.
Bruce: Is your name not Bruce?
McBride: No, it's Darl.
Bruce: Mind if we call you Bruce to keep it clear?
Bruce: Gentlemen, I think we better start the LUG meeting. Before we
start, though, I'd like to ask the padre for a prayer!
Bruce: Oh Stallman we beseech thee!
Bruces: Amen!
Bruce: Crack tube!
Bruce: Now I call upon Bruce to officially welcome Mr. McBride to the
'Straylian LUG.
Bruce: I'd like to welcome the slimy bastard to God's own OS, and remind
him we don't like stuck-up sticky-beaks here.
Bruces: Hear, hear! Well spoken, Bruce!
Bruce: Bruce here is a kernel hacker, Bruce here is a system
administrator, and Bruce here checks source code for copyright
infringement. And is also in charge of the BitKeeper repository.
Bruce: What's New-Bruce going to do?
Bruce: New-Bruce will attempt to undermine the legality of the linux
source code, mislead the public about the nature of SCO's copyrighted
code, question the validity of the GPL, and possibly have a secret
partnership with Microsoft to reduce the spread of linux in the server
and desktop markets by using a smear campaign.
Bruce: But that's a load of bullsh%t!
Bruce: A spit!
Bruce: Howls of derisive laughter, Bruce!
Bruces: Australia, Australia, Australia, Australia, we love ya! Amen!
Bruce: Another tube!
Bruce: Any questions?
Bruce: New-Bruce, Are you a monopolist?
Bruce: Are you a monopolist?
McBride: No!
Bruce: No. Right, I just want to remind you of the LUG member rules:
Rule 1: No monopolists!
Rule 2: No member of the LUG is to use SCO source code in the linux
kernel... if there's anybody watching.
Rule 3: No monopolists!
Rule 4: Now this term, I don't want to see any member of the LUG not
infringing on SCO's copyright.
Rule 5: No monopolists!
Rule 6: There is no!--- Rule 6!
Rule 7: No monopolists!
Right, that concludes the reading of the rules. Bruce!
Bruce: This here's the penguin, the emblem of our source. You can feed
it nasty SCO code, if you don't get caught, of course. Amen!

Linuus Torvalds was nearly bald and made his own O-S, and linux it
was called.
Billy Gates came to take it away, but his server couldn't cut it. Linux
was here to stay!
Big Blue, Big Blue was supporting it too, and linux's growth seemed assured.
Then Darl McBride came along and tried to sucker punch linux in the gut.

There's nothing Stallman wouldn't call 'em when it came to G-P-L.
He figured all the naysayers could die and go to hell!
Bt linux wasn't taken and linux wasn't shaken. It wouldn't be that
easy to kill(1)
The penguin's here to stay, and if McBride won't play he can take his
silly lawsuit and go away.
Billy Gates, Billy Gates just stews and waits for the day when his junk
is obsolete.
And come that day we'll all go play Doom 3 on our linux boxen. Swet!

Yes McBride can take his silly lawsuit and just go away.
'Cause the GPL will hold up and open source will save the day!

Sincerest apologies to Monty Python. And Australia, too. And linux...
And the Australian LUG... And anyone mentioned in the above spoof. I'm
truly sorry. Really. (And for the fact that the song meter isn't exactly
correct... and that many of the facts mentioned are probably distorted.
It's all just a joke, I promise!)

Googling for that error message suggests that you need libdvdcss
installed [see
http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Jan/2889.html for an
example of my Google results]

DVDs are encrypted using an algorithm known as CSS as a kind of a copy
protection, and the details of how to decrypt them were not made
available to the authors of DVD playing software such as xine (much to
the disgust of people who wanted to play DVDs they owned on their own
hardware which they ran Linux etc on).

The encryption was broken a few years ago, details available here:
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/openlaw/DVD/dvd-discuss-faq.html

The upshot is that you should probably grab some or all of:

 - libdvdcss
 - libdvdnav
 - libdvdplay
 - libdvdread

from freshrpms and install them. (I'm not sure precisely which ones
contain the DeCSS libraries.)

The DeCSS code is not normally included in standard builds of DVD
players, presumably to shift some of the legal liability off the
authors.

Any clues? Am I missing installing some package? (RH9 system with apt

but databases make their data available across a network to
other users of other systems. you don't want to set up user
accounts for all of your database users.

Set up a .my.cnf file for your Linux user if you want to
make access with the mysql client program a lot nicer.

If you do need OS X for some certain apps, you could always run mol

Firstly start off with a business plan. See if it is a viable
business in your area. Be honest with your cash flow projections
you might have a lemon on your hands.

How hard is it to count out how many computers you need
multiply that number by a price you have been quoted?
Then find out how much it costs for a big ass internet
connection.
What software are you going to provide your clients?
Word, excel, games etc? Multiply the price for them
to the number of machines you intend to have.
This is only a small tip of a very large ice burg

If you know nothing about computers I don't like
your changes of being sucessful. Possibly look at another
business venture.

Jubril,

I dont
want to be harsh, but you should probably think about doing some other business
venture if you dont have any clue of how to even start. OR get someone that
knows what they are doing... I wouldnt suggest running or setting up such a cafe
if u dont know how to start... In my humble opinion -  Its a recipe for
disaster...

Cheers
and good luck

AW.

Re: [SLUG] I killed gdm I think

2003-07-23 Thread Kevin Saenz
Ok I just reboot the system /tmp is automagically cleaned out at reboot.
I started gdm and this is the message I got.

There is already appears to be an X Server on display :0.
Should I try another display number? If you answer no, I
will attempt to start the server on :0 again. (You can
change consoles by pressing Ctrl-Alt- plus a function keys
such as Ctrl-Alt-F7 to goto console 7. Xservers usually
run on consols 7 and higher)
yes/no

I am new to debian and have only been playing with it for a short
while. I have installed gdm_2.4.1.3-2 are there any issues I should
be aware of with debian and gdm?

Thanks

Kevin

Note: Sco has proven nothing as yet so everything it has done till now

quiet easily tell them to fuck off.
