[SLUG] 2007 AGM meeting minutes

2008-03-25 Thread Lindsay Holmwood
G'day Everyone,
Here are the meeting minutes for 2007. Sorry about the delays - i'm a slacker.

Have a look over them, and raise any points at the AGM on Friday.

SLUG Sydney Linux Users Group Incorporated
==
2007 Annual General Meeting
===
Friday 30th March 2007
at Level 13 IBM building 300 Pacific Hwy
St Leonards

Meeting opened at ?7pm

Presidents report by Lindsay Holmwood

Sydney Linux Users Group (SLUG)
President's Report 2006-2007

The 2006/2007 period was a reasonably historic one for SLUG on a
number of fronts. UTS, our venue for the last 10 years kicked us out,
forcing us to find a new place to hold our monthly meetings. We hosted
linux.conf.au 2007, the first time an LCA has returned to a previously
hosting city. We also managed to come in at a profit, due to new
insurance and banking arrangements.

Although it's been a turbulent year at times, I think we've come a
long way. With an expected surge of new members out of linux.conf.au,
the future certainly looks bright.

Meetings

We've been holding meetings at the University of Technology, Sydney
(UTS) for as long as any of us can remember. UTS have always been a
pleasure to deal with, and Tim Bayfield has been amazingly helpful in
single handedly booking rooms for meetings and activities.

Unfortunately, due to VSU and internal politiking UTS decided to start
charging us $600 per meeting for using their venue. This was obviously
beyond SLUG's means, so we were forced to find a new venue at
extremely short notice (UTS's change of heart came one week out from a
SLUG meeting).

Fortunately for us, IBM stepped up to the plate and provided us a
fantastic venue at St. Leonards. Although the getting into the
building was sometimes tricky, SLUG has coped extremely well and we're
still managing a decent turnout of at least 30 people per meeting.

Unfortunately the shift to the North Shore has caused our numbers to
dwindle, with the extra 20 minute journey and change of train line
making it difficult for some to get home at the end of a meeting.

Fingers crossed we'll be able to find a solution to this problem in
the coming year.

Speakers at SLUG this year included:
 * April: James Dumay
 * May: Ian Weinand
 * June: Mikolaj Habryn, Dave Airlie
 * July: Chris Deigan, Silvia Pfeiffer, André Pang
 * August: Pascal Klein, Jamie Wilkinson
 * September: Conrad Parker, Adam Kennedy
 * October: Ken Yap, Peter Miller
 * November: John Ferlito, Charles Grey
 * January: Holger Levsen, Mikal Still
 * February: James Dumay, Lindsay Holmwood

Thanks goes out to everyone who volunteered to speak, some at very
short notice. :-)

Events
==

We had a broad smattering of events this year, catering to all sorts
of special niches and interests. Special events included:

 * DebSIGs, organised by Lindsay Holmwood + Robert Collins
 * Codefest, organised by Mary Gardiner
 * SLUGaMuSIG, organised by Denis Crowdy
 * Videofests, organised by Silvia Pfeiffer
 * SydPUG, organised by Gavin Sherry
 * Women's Meetup, organised by Myrto Zehnder
 * SLUG Workshop, organised by Chris Deigan
 * Website codefest, organised by Silvia Pfeiffer

And of course, there was linux.conf.au in January. LCA was a
resounding success that wouldn't have been possible without the hard
work and dedication of many members of SLUG who volunteered to make it
all happen.

800 attendees. 70 speakers. 5 days. An awesome event.

Other things

 * New SLUG website.
   With the old website needing a bit of love, the committee and
assorted volunteers spent some time setting up a copy of Drupal and
transferring all the relevant data across.

   This process culminated in a website codefest, organised by Silvia
Pfeiffer, that saw about 10 volunteers getting together in a lovely
photo studio provided by Dave McQuire and hacking on new features for
the website, and fixing up the content.

   It's been a great success, with the site looking miles better and
significantly easier to navigate.

 * New hosting.
   SLUG's server maddog suffered a series of critical hardware
failures that forced us to look for alternative hosting. Solutions
First kindly chipped in and provided a virtual machine on their
hosting infrastructure. Thanks goes out to sol1 for providing a
helping hand!

As you can see, a tremendous amount has happened this year. Thanks to
everyone who's been involved this last year - without your help SLUG
wouldn't nearly be what it is.

I look forward to another fantastic year for 2007-2008!

Go to YaST2 - Security and Users - Local Security, click Next twice,
and you should be at the Boot Settings dialog. The Shutdown
Behaviour of Login Manager drop-down box on that screen affects who
is allowed to shut down the computer from KDM. Automatic should work
but try All Users if it doesn't. KDM should then pass the necessary
permissions to KDE.

  option to log off and there are no options to reboot or power the computer

  Please advise.

Re: [SLUG] Connecting bluetooth under Ubuntu

2008-03-25 Thread elliott-brennan

Hi Richard,

On the basis that you're using KDE (??) this was
my solution:

Take the following information:

00:1D:28:CE:6E::02

Open Konqueror and enter the following information
in the URL window like so:

obex://[00:1D:28:CE:6E::02]:8/

this part:

:8/

represents the channel for your mobile.

Now, in a terminal, if you run:

sdptool browse 00:1D:28:CE:6E::02

and scan down, you'll find something like:

Service Name: OBEX Object Push
Service Description: OBEX Object Push
Service Provider: name of your device
Service RecHandle: some numbers
Service Class ID List:
  OBEX Object Push other numbers and things
Protocol Descriptor List:
  L2CAP (other numbers and things)
  RFCOMM (other numbers and things)

THIS is what you're looking for:

Channel: 8
  OBEX (0x0008)

The number here is what you want to add for the
channel number.

Once you've entered that bit in Konqueror, treat
it like a URL and hit 'GO' :)

This should connect you to your mobile.

If it does anything like mine, I get three icons
(depending on the view you're using):

Audio
Picture
Video.

Then select 'tree' view for this window and click
on the icons. It should show you the relevant bits
on your phone and if you open up another window,
you should be able to copy too and from the phone.

Additionally I use KmobileTools to synch addresses
etc. I'm using Dapper and the newer version of
KmobileTools looks like it works much better.

All of the above is based on you having the
following installed and using KDE:

libobexftp1 none  (no
description available)
ii  libopenobex-1.0-0   1.0.0-rel-3 OBEX
protocol library
un  libopenobex1none  (no
description available)
ii  obexftp 0.10.7+0.10.8pre9-3 file
transfer utility for devices that use the OBEX pr
ii  obexserver  1.0-3ubuntu1

Applications for OpenOBEX
ii  qobex   0.99+1.0beta1-6ubun Swiss
army knife for the OBject EXchange (obex) protoc

I *think* this is all installed using:

sudo apt-get install bluez-utils

I *hope* this is of some help.

Get back to me if you need more help...or if this
doesn't work at all :))

Patrick

*snip*

The answers you seek lie in /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf .

 1. How do either enable 'promiscuous' mode so I do not have any passcodes?

I *think* you can do this by setting security to none. But I've never
tried it and it comes along with all the obvious potential security
gaffes if you do.

 2. How do I configure the passcode?

I set security to auto, and set a PIN for it in the passkey option. In
theory, the default setting of user for the security means ubuntu will
pop up a dialog whenever anything tries to pair with it, but I don't
think I've ever had that working.

Once that's done, restart hcid with /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart , and
initiate the pairing from your mobile device, entering the appropriate
pin when it asks.

http://www.thejoe.com/2007/05/17/bluetooth-pairing-and-tethering-in-ubuntu-feisty/
 is very helpful when you're doing all this.

This is an updated announcement for our next SLUG meeting, on 28 March. This
is a special one as it includes our Annual General Meeting. We have also

[SLUG] Nomination: Anna Buttfield

2008-03-25 Thread James Dumay
I am proud to nominate Anna Buttfield for the position of Ordinary Committee
Member.

Anna has been an integral organiser and liaison venue for the SLUG this
year. She has demonstrated an amazing interest in both the SLUG and Free and
Open Source software community in Sydney and Australia.

I feel Anna will be a invaluable member to this years team if elected.

Anna, I would like to thank you personally for the hard work you have been
doing to make SLUG @ Atlassian possible - without you we would not have been
able to put on such a great monthly event.
