Re: [SLUG] Asus Eee 4G 7 Micro Laptop
Hi all guys !that's first time i write in, but i'm following SLUG from time. Impressions about EEEPC are wonderful, hackings are well documented. i do really agree with martin, since umpc can't compete with low-price of eee, and they dont have Solid State DIsks, wich are one of advantages in ASUS. if you add that here in italy we have a bonus for temporary workers, it will cost you 99 €. maybe you have smthng similar in AUS ? it is prefect with KISMET, GPSDRIVE, AIRCRACK_NG, and also it is the perfect diagnose pc, with it's little size and good battery (needs some cycles to go full power). its components are top quality, and screen readabilty is hence good, practice is the secret !! LOL surely space is a limit, but you can couple with portable 2.5 usb hdd or a NAS . compiz make it superb (xubuntu, no xandros anymore, also if it is good). note that hw/firmware releases are available only if xandors installed, so watch out ! last note, models sent after january don't support much hacking, since they don't have the supplementary mini-pci ... bye from italy, Max On Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 9:01 AM, Erik de Castro Lopo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Martin Visser wrote: There were dozens at LCA last month - geek envy abounded. Re: [SLUG] Asus Eee 4G 7 Micro Laptop
I got a black one from Bing Lee for $470 on Wednesday. So far I love it! It actually seems smoother and faster than my desktop for some things (eg youtube) and actually has the lastest version of Skype so you can do video calls with the in builtltmicrophone and webcam. Projects for the near future: 1. Get Compiz-Fusion working with Xandros (the OS the Eee PC comes with). Apparently this can be done. 2. Get a 2Gb 667Hz RAM fro upgrade - anyone know how to do this on the new '7C' serial number Eee PCs? 3. Find a way to be able to reinstall Xandros so I can try other operating systems. Well, not try them so much as install Fluxbuntu or Xubuntu. But I want to have Xandros on hand in case it doesn't work. BTW, Xandros is not a bad OS. I'm not sure what I was expecting after their bed games with Microsoft, but the OS is pretty good. I don't usually like KDE, but I really suits the Eee PC. 4. Find out how to get the ultra cheap copies of Windows (tm) the are promised to any Xandros user after the voucher agreementI alluded to above. Hey, I'm all for getting free or very cheap stuff! Other notes: 1. The webcam is good and video Skype is great quality for both parties. 2. Wifi is simple and robust. 3. The screen actually has a better rez than most laptops, its just smaller. The only problem with this is having to side-scroll webpages. 4. If you have sausage fingers, start learning to type one handed. 5. Uses Amarok and open office, both of which work fine (open office works faster than on my desktop!). I'll bring mine on Friday as well. andy Fri, 22 Feb 2008 16:52:55 +1100 (EST), Rick Welykochy [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Anyone had a play with the Asus micro laptop? I think the manual talks about doing a restore. I didn't have one, so I booted eeexubuntu from a USB stick, which was able to bring up a network connection. Then, before reinstalling, used dd to grab an image of the internal SSD and transfer that across to a box with storage space. Comes the time I want to restore it, just boot from the USB again, blat the image back across the network and write it to the SSD with dd. -- Pete -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

As a result, you may have a few issues with it. However, it's still a brilliant and easy way to get a little more reading space on your Linux Eee PC (especially if you've been jealous of the Windows XP hackhttp://www.eeeuser.com/2008/01/11/your-eee-pc-in-800x600-1024x768-1280x1024/ !) Going for about $450 at JB Hifi and less on eBay. I picked one up about a month ago, while they were still pretty much exclusive to Myer. The installed operating system is Xandros with icewm and a custom desktop interface. I can't comment on it too much because getting what I wanted out of it seemed too much effort so I installed xubuntu over the top of it in short order. But my one other (non-technical) friend who has one absolutely loves the OS. It's small and light and fairly awesome. The keyboard feels slightly cramped (the right shift key irritates me no end). The screen resolution is 1024x600. Again, a little getting used to (the wiki over at eeeuser.com has a lot of tips for small themes and trimming a lot of vertical space from firefox and the like), but I personally think it's pretty good for things like web browsing. For the price, I think it's a great machine.
