Here's something to consider when migrating to a replacement for RCSE.
One of the strengths of RCSE was that we all used our real names, not

Re: [RCSE] AVA vs Bubble Dancer - Buy vs. Build

Subject: [RCSE] AVA vs Bubble Dancer - Buy vs. Build

Lincoln,

Build vs. buy; is it just an economic question?

As we all know, the AVA is almost an exact copy of Mark Drela's Bubble
Dancer. It is a little bigger and a little heavier, but other than that,
we

can consider it the Bubble Dancer ARF. But is it a good value, or is it a
high priced package?

A group of guys at my club got together and made up Bubble Dancer kits
this
past winter, five of them. It included a premade molded fuselage and
boom.
To create the kits cost around $310. I don't know how long the build
took.

I bought one of the kits, took a look at the build, and sold the kit to
another club member. I bought an AVA. I am not a builder, and that build
would have been way over my head. For me the cost of the ARF was cheap
compared to the time investment to build.

Denny, at www.polecataero.com was selling an EZBD kit for a while for
$340.

Based on the work my club members did to create those kits, Denny's kit
seems very reasonable in price. And he claims it is a faster build.
Based

on the quality of his other planes, I would trust a kit from Polecat.

Now, if someone likes the AVA and wants to build it for themselves, then
build the Bubble Dancer. Based on what I have seen at the field, the
Bubble
Dancer is just as much of a super ship as the ARFs that copy it. And, it
is

a real builder's plane. But it takes a lot of work time to build. If
building is your pleasure, it is time is well spent. However if you look
at

it as time equals money or building time subtracts from other activities,
then you are doing a make/buy economic decision.

If you take the time to build a Bubble Dancer into account, I agree, the
AVA, the Topaz, the Soprano and similar ships are a real good value.
Unless

you love to build, there is little economic justification to building the
kit over the available high quality ARFs. If you love to build, then the
hours spent building are a joy in itself and the money saved is of no
importance and an AVA offers little value to someone who loves to build.

First off, let's put my alleged divinity aside for the duration of this
post.

People whine too loudly about the super ships in RES. I've beaten some
of them with 25 year old pieces of crap. On a good day it doesn't matter
that much. Unless you get extra bonus points for landing a pretty ship,
you can get the same 100 landing points with an old trainer. I'll admit
that on tough days having an Ava improves your chances. However, the Ava
is quite a deal. $700 or so. A top of the line unlimited like the Supra
is going to run you somewhere between almost twice to almost three times
that. If you insist on someone else building the glider, an Ava or
similar is quite a deal. I figure it would take me more than 100 hours
to build something like that, and it wouldn't be as nice. Would take
less time to get a second job flipping burgers and buy the Ava..

If you want to build gliders yourself, well then things are still cheap,
but there are so few people who want to do that that kits are hard to
find. Remember that these dollars are worth a lot less than the ones we
had in the '80s, when as I recall people would spend what I recall as
the better part of $300 on a Windsong kit and spend 100 hours BUILDING
it. I spent maybe 60 hours building a Cumic back in 1990, and it turned
out to be a real dog. Not like the Sagitta wings I'd build before.

Actually, I do want to do a little building, but it doesn't make
economic sense when I'm working full time.

Possibly kits will make a comeback when wages in the rest of the world
get close to what they are in the USA. (That's a good thing, by the way,
except maybe for the environment.)

BTW, although I've flown 2M a LOT, I think 100 inches would have been
the better limited size.

I think it is abundantly clear the path that is needed to be taken in
soaring to restore it to all its glory. Yes, I am talking about the
complete prohibition of all but one aircraft from soaring competition.

The one and only aircraft that shall be used is the venerable Skeeter,
 and

it MUST be built by the pilot. This will restore the need for building
skills and also positively determine who the best pilot is. Anyone who
 can

keep a Skeeter aloft from more than a few minutes truly is a a soaring
 God!!

So there it is, the salvation of soaring is the Skeeter. Who'd a thunk
 it??

Re: [RCSE] Re:Motor limiter launch

2008-06-28 Thread TJB
It would have to be altitude and time, and only one single motor run. I'd
rather go straight for a thermal than straight up. It 's going to be tough
for LSF to allow electric motors in a pure sailplane environment. Will need
a new category.
Just something more to go wrong with my plane. It might favor motor
technicians.

(most people should ignore the following rant ; )
If LSF is going to change anything, it should be the contest thing.
The contest part is the toughest for all the new LSF people I've signed up.
I signed up 8 people and only two ever got their level II because of
contests. Now it's worse than ever to travel. Originally, most monthly
club constests had enough people. Out here, it's several hundred miles of
driving to find one with enough people for level II and III and way tougher
for the last two. Keep it for level IV and V, but get rid of it for the
lower ones and just add an equivalent like 6 ten minute flights in a row
with a total score of whatever the average might be to win one of the club
contests. You have the scores of those that got their levels. I bet a lot
of the early V's had a lot easier job than the last ones. Heck have it a
postal contest with witnesses.

If you all are really interested and bored to death in this lousy weather,
you can go to

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=883683page=8

and read a ton of stuff about electric sailplanes and altitude limiting.

It will probably come in due time and I am trying to help that along, but as
you will see from the thread on RCGroups it needs real organization. The LSF
is the SIG for electric sailplanes but I am not sure the new officers know
that yet and what a bag of worms they own.

There is a core group of us working the issue (not as hard as we should be)
trying to come up with a logical plan to see if electric launched sailplanes
are just the same as a hand launched sailplane or a winch launched sailplane
or people towed sailplane. In other words, just another launch method to get
to some almost common launch height to start looking for air.

If anyone one you Pure sailplane pilots want to help, bring an electric
powered sailplane to the LSF Winch Launched Nats and either purchase a Zlog
from Barry Kennedy or me (I will try to have several loaners there) and we
will organize an after hours test using F3J rules. I would love to see 10
guys launching together and see what the Zlog is really capable of doing in
a mock contest round or two.

Lets end the talk and do something together to get this discussion into some
kind of real data to work from. As a group, I think we are the only ones who
will benefit or loose from exploring electric launched sailplanes.

Have fun reading the RCgroups thread.

Just read the article. To some extent, I find myself agreeing (did I
write that? pass the Risperdal!). However, just because Gordy and I
succumb to tempatation when we have an electric glider* that is getting
low, doesn't mean other people do. If you have the strength of will to
ignore that nice power switch after the first climb is over, you can
ignore what he said. But I'll admit that when there's a motor in the
glider I usually won't fight out the last 50 or maybe even 100 feet. And
I definitely will with an unpowered glider. So there go all those fun
saves. (I was told that on a 58 minute flight (or was it the 60 minute
flight??) I was down to 20 feet at 3 minutes. I thought it was 40, but
that's another story. Low enough with a 25 year old 2 meter. (hmm... is
this the Gordy bragging disease too?)

We have a bunch of people flying electric gliders in our club. Some of
them even come home with vinyl/brass/particle board plaques sometimes.
Some of them have houses in structural overload from hanging the plaques
on the wall. However, we also have a guy who is trying to start an
electric event which involves old hlg's and vertical climbs. He very
seldom talks about the power off part of the flight. This guy has
acquired my old Chrysalis. It's very amusing to watch him launch, but it
ain't soaring. He can get lots of exciting vertical drag racing because
the flights don't last long. The model is, I think, two or three ounces
overweight, which is a lot on a Chrysalis.

Anyway, Gordy mentions an automatic motor shutoff. I think this will
emphasize motor power even more, because now you have to be going Mach
0.5 at motor shutoff so you can get another 1000 feet or so. Therefore
it needs to link in to activate flaps or spoilers for 5 seconds or
something. (Perhaps activate spoilers for first 30 seconds of flight
above 500 feet? Total energy probe?) Once these little details are
worked out, I don't see why Gordy shouldn't then advocate using a
similar system with a releasable towhook on winch launches. That'll make
Histarter happy too. (for those of you who don't know my last reference,
your ignorance is bliss)

*Sailplanes are for people with bigger egos than mine. Gliders can go up
to, including, sometimes, 40 size power trainers that happen to be dead
stick.

Gordy wrote:

Or you could have posted me directly to discuss it such a fun topic

Its been quite a while since I wrote that article which is more a review
of
the programmable altitude priority motor cut off switchbut I play
this

game :-)

The context of the article is replacing winch launches..

snip

One more time because I know that motor heads who have found a sailplane
will fit motors will want to go off on how what they do is good (and it
IS by
the way) but that has nothing to do with the context of the
article...replacing

winch launches with electric motor launches.

So with a programmable altitude shut off switch, TD pilots could have
the
smallest and cheapest possible motor/prop/gearbox/controller/ battery,
versus

electric sailplane events where the motor package is priority.

This is the first time I've seen the day before soaring, not used by

Hi,
Is anyone from Muncie listening?
I'll be arriving this Sat. and would like to be able to get some
flight time while the NATs site is being used for all the other events.

Thanks for the bandwidth

Re: [RCSE] US F3J Team Report

2008-06-25 Thread TJB

Rich Burnoski lost a Supra when the stab hit my hand
during launch. It is hurt bad, but repairable. The hand is, but what about
the plane?

With Vlad and Barry there, they should supply the stabs or have them
overnighted from Vlad's place. On DP's was it the screw or weak build?

Subject: [RCSE] US F3J Team Report

Greetings from Turkey. The US Team is on the ground (mostly). There were a
few hiccups in the travel, and we are still sorting it out here on Wed. The
plans for reception by the organizer were great and we had a guide
personally waiting for us at the airport. We have our personal driver and
it has been terrific. Most of the team made it in on-time and with all our
baggage and planes. Unfortunately the contingent coming in from the NW had
a number of problems. Our Tower was delayed in Amsterdam and wound up
getting in at 4:00AM and had to wait until 6:00AM today to get picked up.
Their good news was that their gear all arrived. The Rest of the NW crew
was not as lucky. They made it in nearly on time, but neither their planes
nor large baggage made it. After their 3 hour ride from the airport to the
hotel, they arrived at between 3 and 4AM. Their van was not ready either,
s they had to take the team car back to the airport (another 3+ hour
ride) and persevere with the lost baggage folks to find the planes.
Eventually the planes were found, a Van was rented and they are currently
enroute to Adapazari, but too late for any practice for them today. We got
whacked pretty good on excel baggage charges, but if we are able to have
the same level of charges for the return trip, we should only exceed our
budget by $400 or so.

The rest of the team arrived at the field to find our palatial estate.
Other than the Turkey team, we have the largest tent area. Tent is an
understatement. This thing is 2 stories high with plenty of room for all of
our models and our 23 team members and supporters. The organization is
fantastic, with everyone asking if we needed anything. We could not be more
comfortable or welcome! We spent most of the morning getting the equipment
organized. The afternoon was spent practicing. Our team is looking very
good and very comfortable with the conditions here. Our timing drills were
very precise so we should do well. Frankie and Phil's practice tows were
awesome. The other towers were still off retrieving model boxes - they will
get their workout tomorrow.

Now the bad news. Rich Burnoski lost a Supra when the stab hit my hand
during launch. It is hurt bad, but repairable. Daryl blew a stab off
during launch, he flew it down inverted with flaps with no other damage. We
need to find him a new stab. No other carnage to report.

The weather here is as predicted, hot and humid. Light air in the morning,
with the wind picking up in the afternoon and lightening up later in the
day. The carnage happened in pretty good breezes.

The hotel is great WITH AIR CONDITIONING. Everybody is really nice from the
hotel staff to the restaurants to the pubs.

I took some GREAT pictures for you, but it appears that I left my camera
cable at home, so someone else will have to post the pics.

Tomorrow we have a serious practice, and try to keep our models intact.

GO USA!

Jim Monaco

Amazing, buying 4 cost 9.99, buying 8 cost 24.99
So buying 2 4 packs is a large savings.

And Batteries America is selling them for a lot too.

Are you done with the ESL?

were 4 AA cells for $9.97 + $7.90 shipping; 8 cells for ($8.77 x 2)

So, I get home from going to a contest and I am a little tired
because it was way out of town, actually about 8500 miles out of
town. My body isn't sure where it is so I wake up and flip the
TV on. Honestly who is walking straight towards me out of the TV
is my flying buddy Ben Clerx. And I am confused because he
doesn't have a chute in his hand. Apparently Our Friend Ben, is
not only a World Recognized Intentional F3J Pilot, but in his
spare time he is a well known UFO Hunter. Apparently Ben will do
just about anything to raise those funds to go to Istanbul. So
if you want to see Ben doing his other thing, he will be on the
History Channels UFO Hunters tonight Wednesday. Apparently there
is a side of Ben that his friends don't see where he isn't
wearing that Floppy Gardening hat. If everything goes well and
he gets a spin off sitcom, we may all see TV cameras at all of
our large contests. Way to go Ben! LJ

My friend Dan is looking for a contest class plane. He is not sure what is
available but he is looking for a receiver ready full house plane in very good
condition as he does not like to do any kind of building at all. He has no
workshop and the dining room table well it doesn't really work.

Planes of interest are the Supra, Pike Superior or Perfect, Sharon, Graphite,
or similar composite planes in this class. Molded, bagged with spar, or built
up/composite dbox type wings are of greatest interest. He has a Compulsion
now. He likes it a lot but wants to add a second, plane of the types listed.

If you have one or know of someone who does, send me an e-mail and I will get
the conversation going.

No big rush, but if you are ready to move, he probably is too.

There are several types of servo savers. Some have spings on the rod to

I haven't had first hand experience with carbon pushrods but I would guess
that you could also run the risk of stripping a servo with a stiffer linkage
if you failed to retract the flaps on landing again. It's cheaper to
replace or fix the pushrod instead of a wing servo.

suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[RCSE] Wram Fliers

2008-02-12 Thread TJB
I just got a whole package of WRAM Show fliers to give out, but nowhere on the
flyer is any information as to where it is or how to get there. They would be
okay if you were already at the show, since it has the list of exhibitors and
programs. They are of little use to give out to people who don't know anything
about the show -- which is just about everyone we would give the flier to
around here. Seems like a waste of paper to leave that off.

Anyone else get these?

I had a transmitter antenna problem last year. My Futaba 8 U has a Smiley
Rubber Ducky antenna. This attaches by means of a spring loaded bayonet mount.
Due to the design the spring loading allows the mating pin to flex back and
fourth a bit. After years of use I found the pin had broken off and that I had
been flying with the antenna connection just barely touching. I think that is
what caused the crash of my Organic at last years Nats.

So I bought a new Rubber Ducky antenna assuming I would get a few more years
of use before it failed. I was wrong. I just checked it and found it had
failed the same way. After only a few months of use. Probably due to all the
HL flying I've been doing which causes a lot of flexing of the spring loaded
mount back and fourth during the launching process with it's attendant mating
pin flexing.

Glad I caught it during a shop check.

You don't anodize steel. It won't hold up. You can epoxy paint it or clean
the ring well and use bright red nail polish. It will still wear on the
inside, but should be quite visible. Easy to re-coat when needed.

Yep, you are right about the light weight part. : )

Powder coating is an option. I have a powder coater, but it would be a bit
expensive to do for just a couple of welded rings. If someone sends me a
dozen rings I will do it for them in exchange for keeping 6 of them.
I have some bright red that would look nice. I've used nail polish with
success and it's cheap.

Annodized steel rings are great! Extremely light too.

In the annodizing process the steel is melted away by the acids leaving only
the color. Really stands out in the sun, your pilots won't have any trouble
picking up the wrong lines.

Or you could use a short colored piece of leader line to the rings, Mason
line can be found in florescent pink, yellow, orange and green at contractor
supply houses that sell to the masonary crowd. You'll have to check on the
line strength to get a piece strong enough, but its out there. I had been
using it for years on my winch and bungees. Since its a short piece you
don't have to have that strong of a piece, and of course you can double it
up.

We had planned a trip to Nashville on the way to Tullahoma this year.
Wife says she doesn't want to go to Atlanta.

They post some great pictures of every place but their own field.

Keith,
Didn't see it posted anywhere. Not sure if your post got through, some
haven't been.
Figured I'd clarify some info for people that might be interested. This was
your first full house plane. You are

building a Supra and need to sell it.
Have I got it right? Hit reply all if you want to let people on the
exchange know.

Genie LT build by Harley himself.
Ready to fly (RDS naturally) less receiver.
Has sailplane bag also.

You are asking $600 plus $50 to box and ship CONUS? Costs more than $600 to
build one if you include servos.

Is it the yellow one pictured on Harley's site?

Yep 6V winch motor run at 12 V -- that's the way to get the best 6 V
launch height. There are some 6V motors that would wreck just about any
plane -- even run at 6 volts. Not sure what voltage actually has to do
with it. Some guys can launch great or some can botch a launch on any type
of winch.

When we talk about balancing winch torque with a #300 lb line, I am pretty

Or the set up at Visalia. Very few line breaks considering how many
launches they go through on a weekend.

All this resistance talk is good from a technical point of view, but for the
guys at the Southwest Classic they may have a marketing issue on their
hands. Travel hundreds of miles, spend money staying here and look forward
to 6v launch heights. Guaranteed fewer line breaks.

I hope Chico and company have a good welcoming speech! I'm considering
taking along a smaller plane that might launch higher.

One other thought. The winch setup at the Nats was excellent with
regard to reliability and uniformity. In addition, I did not find the
winches so powerful that they blew my hair back (at least what's left
of it).Perhaps someone who was responsible for the set up of these
winches would like to comment on the setup and what went into setting
them up.

they keep trying to explain just how this RAD's system is suppose to work.

i remember you sending me a cool animation of how a spoiler servo works,
thought that was the coolest thing that you can do, and how useful.

a post with you showing this how to work would blow them away,
and be very useful.

if that could be done, i'm guessing it would take a lot of time on your

Yes. Laminating film is very thin and not very tough. You can cover planes
with it. It's easy to get at any large format print shop. They often have
roll ends that they can't use because they aren't long enough.

I use clear adheasive backed carpet covering from Lowes to cover plans with.
It also keeps the mats in my truck clean. Uhaul also sells it:

Setup/practice day is the 18th and the MOM starts on Friday morning. Sunday
morning wraps up the MOM with the fly-offs for the cash beginning around
lunch time.

We are still in the early planning stages for the '08 event, but in addition
to the top spot payouts Horizon Hobby will be offering a mid-pack fly-off
for Big $'s (amount TBD).

So get ready because this will be bigger then the '06 event.

JT,
It IS strange to have RES in the middle. Who made this up? Gonna be a long
week. But at least I'll have something to do each day. I liked it when RES

someone trying to squash 2M once and for all. They're all fun events.

No Tom (B), its shoving RES (HL on Steroids) down the throats of anyone
that cares to fly any/all of the other TD events. Great for Chuck, crappy
for those that don't play hyper-HL. Seems to me that RES should follow
UNL in this schedule, so the traditional multi-function events flow one
after the other.

Actually there are plenty of good slope spots here in Athens, but no one
seems to fly around here. Even at the Parthenon, you could slope three
sides...as well as most of the seaside locations.

No planes along though on this trip ;-( Between food and beer and yipes!
work, just no time.

Going thru withdrawals, its been more than two weeks since I flew a sailplane
;-(

Nice weather in any case here.

Gonna check for a hobby shop tomorrow just for grins!

2007-12-07 Thread TJB
Jim,
I made one and it costs almost as much to make as to buy one and takes a lot of
time. I built a Hobby VAC http://www.build-stuff.com/1001plans_hobby_vac.htm
(from older plans - newer plans look better) Sold it to Mike Reno and I think
he's selling it now.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a couple that I bought ( 24 x 24 $2500 and 13 x 18 $580) I was able
to do 1/4 scale Minimoa canopy on the small one, but needed the big one for the
Duo Discus.

Here's one that looks like a good one if you are set on building one:
http://www.runforcoverbooks.com/si/21746.html

UVA has one of these and I used it for some very large parts as well as some
smaller ones. It's a really good deal at $7500 and can do 6 x 6 or 24 x 36
parts
http://www.kdcapital.com/Products/ProductDetails.cfm/ProductID/395479/Photos/1#

If you want to stop by next time you are down this way and copy one of the ones
I have, they would not be as difficult to build as I think the Hobby Vac is.

You can get whatever sheets you need cut from Piedmont Plastics.

I use my machines on a regular basis, so they pay for themselves. If you just
need a part here and there or a canopy, just make the mold and I will gladly
form it for you.

I got the glass eagles for $8 and the ceramic ones for $9 at Wal-Mart. Made
some walnut blocks and mounted the ceramic eagles with silicone. Mounted the
glass ones to the plaques.
I asked for donations of old plaques from people who had boxes of them. Took
off the faces or just covered them up with new info printed on wood veneer or
aluminum sheet.
You can also print color pictures and mount them to the old plaques.

Re: [RCSE] DLGs = Bang ,etc = cost per hour.

2007-12-02 Thread TJB
How about cost per hour? Since I purchased it 4 years ago, I have flown my
$3500 (value) Duo Discus 1 hour. I have flown my XP 4.5 about 80 hours...
Even at $600 that would be $7.50 per hour compared to $3500 per hour. Now,
I can sell my Duo for around $3000 and maybe get $300 for the DLG. So, the
cost per hour on the Duo is about $500 and the cost per hour for the DLG is
more like $3.75.

If you calculate the total cost for a plane based on what you paid, what you
sold it for (or can get for it), you will be surprised how expensive some
planes are. I sold an SBXC that cost me about $1900 flying. Sold it for
$900 with 18 hours on it. $55.55 per hour to fly it.

I'd like to hear from some others on this way of looking at things.

I disagree with your analysis. We're not flying fruit so cost per ounce is
irrelevant.

I have to disagree with Buzz regarding DLG being the best value. I
agree that DLG has made HL more accessible to all pilots due it the
ergonomics of launching them. But value, for that lets

take a step back and look at it from a distance.

When evaluated analytically, DLG is absolutely the worst value in
soaring today. Lets take the recent example of the $1000 Vandal (all up
ready to fly) that was snapped up off of RCSE recently. For simplicity
assume that the plane weighs 10 oz all up. A simple calculation yields
$100/oz.

Now lets take a Supra at $2000 (all up: plane plus radio gear) at 65 oz.
Same simple calculation yields $31/oz.

OK, next up on the list is an SBXC at $2500 (all up, plane plus radio
plus vario) at 176 oz.

Crank, crank, the calculator tells me $14.25/oz.

Getting the drift here? Now lets take Sagitta 900 at $350 (kit plus
gear) weighing 40 oz. Push the little beads on the abacus and what
comes out: $8.75/oz.

Disclaimer- this doesn't assign any value for building, enjoying, etc.
Then again, nobody really makes money out of the hobby, we all do it for
fun, no?

So, what is really more cost effective, soaring gold (DLG), or history
(Sagitta)?

On a kind of related topic, I've been having a great laugh about all
this benchmark garbage. What a bunch of subjective tripe. All I really
see is reminiscing about what gets an individual's attention and
represents progress to them.

I've been in the technology business for 40 years, and if I've learned
anything, true paradigms define themselves without any help. By their
very nature, the direction that technology goes after the paradigm
emerges will change because of the paradigm.

Re: [RCSE] Bubble Dancer

2007-11-24 Thread TJB
Mike is right. It definitely makes a difference on how it is built. I built a
great one and then bought one that someone else built. It has been the worst
flying plane I've ever had. I have almost got it re-built. The stab was over
2 oz (average is .7 to.8 oz). It took so much lead in the nose to balance it,
that it was over 72 oz. It should be under 50. The control rods were totally
loose in the fuse (the stab one was not even in a sleeve). The stab would get
stuck every now and then. There were a number of other things, but most have
been resolved. I hope to test it tomorrow with all the re-do's. The vertical
stab is still way to heavy, but I haven't messed with it. So... after all
that, do a good job of building and build light !

If you are an A+ builder you will easily have an Ava beater. If you are an
average builder you will have an average sailplane. You have long winters in
Michigan, plenty of time to build. The old Soviet block builders put out very
high quality pieces of art. I know I am not up to the task, as I now have more
money than time. Good luck on the build. I sure miss sculpting my own planes.
Snowing in Texas? I flew my SparrowHawk (full size) today, got to 10,100ft in
slope and thermal lift today. I love SoCal! Mike Reagan

flying at a non-AMA insured field and doing just fine. Woodies and
electrics have taken over much of soaring because they are fun. Clubs are
work, and true competitive soaring is a craft that the electric parkfliers
are not that interested in. Competition is a lot of very hard work and
paperwork for usually only one or two individuals.

Is the PR to promote soaring in general or specifically the ESL? PR should
strive to have some measurable results and the right audience to be
considered effective. Is it directed at existing power and electric
fliers, existing soaring persons, general public, school kids, soccer moms,
etc? There is no one type of campaign that covers them all. The content of
something going to a soaring group is much different than that going to the
general public.

What is the goal? Who is your target audience? Are you trying to create
national attention? Are you trying to help the individual clubs in the ESL?
Ask CASA, LASS, etc, what or if there is anything that would help them.
Phil and Skip should have some input. As well as John Murr and John Hauff.
What would help CASA may be very different than what would help LISF. It
may mean making personal presentations to the power clubs to garner some
interest in soaring, and to soaring clubs to garner interest in competition.
When only one or two people from the hosting club show up for an ESL
contest, then what will bring more individual club members out?

Now, that said for PR. ESL needs a brochure explaining what IT is and
what it's goals are. The brochure needs to promote the benefits of
competition, encourage participation and make ESL attractive.

That said, I would like to see ESL develop and promote a single big contest
like Mid-South or Visalia. One EAST COAST major competition. It is
expensive to go to 6 or 7 contests and I noticed that the number of those
actually getting in their 6 contests for ESL scoring, has dropped to a
very small group. Reducing the requirement to the one big and best 3 might
be an idea. You can go to three weekends and still not get six contests in
if one day is a bust. Attending more contests is a way to improve your
score, but not going to all of them won't totally knock you out.

Anyhow, just food for thought.

Tom

I need to put together a PR packet, and contact newspapers in advance

I have ideas and I am sure many of you do to. I want some guidance from
people who have actually done the PR job. ... I need to

what belongs in the PR packet. We are looking to attract new membership,

There are many avenues to pursue, many outlets, some of these are not

Are there really that many pilots in Muncie that they can't spare a month
out of the year for competition? And one issue a year about competition
shouldn't be such a big deal. How are people going to learn about it and
become interested? I guess it won't be long before AMA becomes the AEA (All
Electric Association), like many of the soaring clubs. Heck, the majority
of the soaring pilots in our area don't even want to have a club. They just
get together at a field and fly, no club, no dues, no contests, no hassle.

That's not what I heard from the editor of the mag. I heard that the AMA
received numerous letters from members that were tired of seeing an entire
issue about competition. There is a similar issue with members not liking
the AMA facilities and grounds being used for an entire month for
competition which they supposedly received letters about. So a number of
days was cut from Nats this year.

So in one year we almost lost a day at Nats, but shifted to starting on
Friday to keep all the dates and we have lost the magazine coverage for
the Nats.

It seems a growing number of modelers are not interested in contest
flying.

I think that's unfortunate because that's my favorite part about soaring.
And the Nats issue was my favorite issue for the entire year, now it's
just a Christmas catalog of advertisements.

Well sure, they shouldn't have a problem giving up their flying site for

Seeing how Indiana has a nice and warm year 'round flying season, an

To be fair, the following comment from the manual should be noted:

   Parkflyers Only:

The DX6 system is designed for parkflyer type aircraft
only. This includes all forms of compact electric and
non-powered airplanes as well as micro electric
helicopters. While the system has more than adequate range
for these types of aircraft, it is imperative that the
system not be used in larger aircraft that could exceed

Re: [RCSE] need source for winch turnarounds

2005-09-28 Thread TJB

The best (for other than f3J)is a low to the
ground unit. The ones with stakes can get fowled with downwind or over the
top launches. The tall stake units often catch the line and make for long walks
to untangle.
Using an aircraft pulley on a low pivot bearing is
ideal. The line can't get stuck and it works perfectly, even with off
center launches. I made one of these and absolutely love it.

You can also use the Tim McCann unitmade by
ErichSchlitzkus if you use a stake
with a bearing on it. The stock one works okay, but the line rides up on
the side with off center launches.

Re: [RCSE] need source for winch turnarounds

2005-09-28 Thread TJB
Sorry, but it follows the plane as good as any low turnaround out there. It
pivots on the bottom plate.
I will bring it to the next contest for you to see. It is low to the ground
so the line doesn't get caught on it. No one unit is perfect for all uses,
but this one really works well for what I fly.
The McCann one doesn't pivot, which is why I said it needs to be mounted on
a spike with a bearing so it can. I have one mounted on a plate so it can
pivot. The ones on the tall stakes are good if there are no downwind
launches.

Jeff would be more knowledgeable as far as F3J and F3B goes. I would agree
with Jeff, if you don't mind an occasional walk, the WinchDoc one is the
best one that follows the plane very well and is pre-made. You can do what
Phil does and put guy lines out to each side to help keep the line from
getting caught.

Absolutely NOT. The best turnaround is one that can follow the plane. The
reason, if someone comes off the launch to the side, or snaps on the
launch the plane will veer hard to the side. The fixed turnaround limits
their ability to recover. The floating one follows the tension. Tom's
design below will abrade the line if it is off to the side.
The floating unit like the Winch doc is great if you advance to F3b, or
F3j as well. In that case you can hook off into the wind and launch
better. The ESL replaced their ground based turnarounds with Winchdoc
units. We had units very similar to the McCann style units.. Don't get me
wrong they work but the line stays low to the ground and abrades on the
ground too.
Also the McCann winches are great... One of my club uses 2 of them. But
the Winchdoc turnarounds are more functional

In the ESL on braided we keep them high to prevent the rash from the
ground
In F3B I keep it low to the ground to prevent the mono from being cut by
other F3B fliers.
In F3J it works great with either a fixed tow rig or a sliding tow rig.
Doug even provides both a screw, and a hitch pin for either permanent
mount or quick release like F3J .. I use the hitch pin.

Buy the winchdoc turnaround and you won't need to buy anything for F3J if
you decide to fly it , or F3b.. by any other style and you'll be back to
buy the winchdoc unit..

I don't know Doug, have never met him, but use the real balls on all ESL
winches, and own his turnaround... Quality stuff at a good price.

You can also use the Tim McCann unit made by Erich Schlitzkus if you use
a stake with a bearing on it. The stock one works okay, but the line
rides up on the side with off center launches. Tom

Yes, the TA4 is a good unit, but a bit cumbersome for me. I should have
been saying the TA3 instead of using McCann or Winchdoc names when I talked
about pivoting.

For what it's worth, my turnaround, the McCann A-4 does indeed pivot.
It clips onto a tripod with a caribener type hook and hands freely,
able to move about all axis.

Pretty slick and easy to setup.

I will bring it to the next contest for you to see. It is low to the

uses,

but this one really works well for what I fly.
The McCann one doesn't pivot, which is why I said it needs to be mounted
on
a spike with a bearing so it can. I have one mounted on a plate so it
can

pivot. The ones on the tall stakes are good if there are no downwind
launches.

Jeff would be more knowledgeable as far as F3J and F3B goes. I would
agree

with Jeff, if you don't mind an occasional walk, the WinchDoc one is the
best one that follows the plane very well and is pre-made. You can do
what

Phil does and put guy lines out to each side to help keep the line from
getting caught.

Re: [RCSE] Thermal duration V or + tail

2005-09-08 Thread TJB
I personally have one and 1/2 escape V-tails (had 4) and have two Escape
X-tails. I really like the way the x-tail flies over the V-tail. More
forgiving and easier to set up. The almost new perfect condition V-tail
wing and fuse bags included with extra fuse and 2 tails (various conditions)
is for sale for $1100 ready to fly . 8 servo set up.
I also have a brand NIB Escape light F3J version X-tail for sale for $1185 +
shipping if interested. That's what I paid for it when I thought I needed a
back-up for the Nats.

Hello,

In my experience both types work equally well.

Theoretically a V-tail is more efficient than a cross tail, but less
efficient than a T-tail. In practice I can't pick the difference.

A V-tail can be lighter than a cross tail, and much lighter than a T-tail.
Even this does not matter much.

The best handling model I have ever had has a V-tail, but I doubt if it
would be better or worse with a well designed cross tail.

The only handling problem I have ever had with a V-tail model was caused
because I did not set it up correctly. I set this model up with
insufficient
rudder deflection, and did not have enough rudder authority to recover
from

a dangerous situation. After some repairs, and with the set up done
properly, it performed beautifully, and still does some years later.

When acting as elevators the ruddervators need very little movement but,
when acting as rudders they need as much as you can get. My problem could
just as easily have happened with a cross tail model.

I am quite happy with either tail type, though I rather like the look of a
V-tail. Many European moulded models are available with either style of
tail. When next I buy one my choice of tail type will most likely depend
on

what the importer has in stock.

I've noticed that the Europeans seem to prefer the V tails but the
Americans

seem to prefer the plus tails for thermal duration. Why the difference?
