[RCSE] IMPORTANT LISTSERVE ANNOUNCEMENT
I paid a visit to the Blog site and registered. Not much there and virtually nothing on soaring. There are some media clips but you have to be someone's friend, apparently, in order to view them. RE: [RCSE] In Memory of RCSE
Mike, That post must have taken place before my time on RCSE...and it was definitely worth ALL of the Delete Key efforts that I've endured over the years. What a great read...Any more out there like that, I'd sure like to see 'em before RCSE disappears! -Sheldon- 2008 Soaring Nationals Head Turnaround Troll -Original Message- From: Mike Lachowski [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 25, 2008 9:52 PM To: rdwoebke; RCSE Subject: Re: [RCSE] In Memory of RCSE Ryan, here is the post from Dave Jones. _ The Shaggy Thermal Some time ago one of our flying friends, Jim, died. Rather sad really because he was such a character. It was typical of him that he stated in his will that he was to be buried with his Radio (fully charged) and his trusty Monarch HLG. Anyway, some few weeks later we had a seance and made contact with a strong presence that announced itself as Jim. He was always one to talk you leg off and he hadn't changed. The glass dashed madly across the board and nearly wore the letters out. The story that unfolded was astonishing and is here told and we have no way of verifying it. However here it is, in full, in Jim's own words. I have to tell you about soaring in the after life, it's certainly different. The first thing that I remember was falling down for miles into a dark pit with my Monarch and radio clutched in my hands. Eventually I came to a sudden stop in a clean white marble corridor. I was not alone for long, a chap in an Armani suit came along and spoke to me. Ah yes, Jim isn't it, welcome to our little kingdom. Where am I? Oh, there is plenty of time for curiosity, all the time you want, but to put you in your misery this is Hades. Hell! Rather an overworked image that, we prefer Hades, it's less threatening, and it rhymes better. So who are you, the Devil. There you go again, no my name is Mephistopheles, and I think that you will find it more correct, politically that is, to call him the Dark Lord, or when you get to know him Lucifer. Now come this way. We walked down this never ending corridor with white marble doors bearing notices in white paint. You know this isn't what I had in mind, it looks so clinical, cool and clean. Yes, good isn't it. We get a lot of corporate interior designers down here so we gave them a break from the Kitsch room. The Kitsch room? Of course you are new here. You see we don't go in for that fire and brimstone stuff, very old fashioned. No, we find that it is best to tailor the eternal environment to the client. So we have all of the Interior designers living in a house with flock Paisley wallpaper, plastic flowers, black vinyl covered chairs, flourescent T.V's. They wear bright nylon hawaian suits and plastic sandals, that sort of thing. That's not so bad? It is if you are an interior designer he said in an ominous tone and laughed. Look here's an interesting room, we keep all the Coke heads in here. He pushed open a door to a room stacked with white powder, mirrors, dollar bills and razor blades. Some figures were shuffling around in the distance. But you have given them everything that they want. Mephistopheles laughed. Yes, everything, absolutely everything, except. He waited expectantly for my question. Except what? Noses. Nice touch that, it was one of Lucifer's lighter moments. He closed the door and we walked on for hours. From time to time Mephistopheles would stop and open a door, it was horribly fascinating. There were Merchant Bankers trudging streets in ragged clothing with begging bowls, Heavy Metal freaks strapped to benches while Donny Osmond songs were played at 110 decibels, Nagging Neighbours in rooms whose walls were constantly being tapped, and too many more to mention now, another time perhaps. By now I was getting the idea of how the system worked and I was getting worried. We had reached the end of the corridor and were walking through a cave. Oh Jim, just ignore the decor around here, we haven't modernised it yet. What are these pits? Nothing very special, we call it the Bunyan section, it's so corny now. You see here, this one is for good intentions, that one up ahead, the huge one, is full of politicians promises. That one ahead is full of advertisers lies. We've already passed the pit of adulteries, quite an amusing one that, perhaps my favourite. You see that pile over there, Golf balls, the minor demons have great fun stealing them, childish really. We were passing the pit of politicians lies and Mephistopheles dragged his hand through the slimy surface. He stopped and held up several strips of

Hey Gordy: We finally got a chance to try out the KY Horse Park field last Sat and it should do quite nicely. A bit of a slope, but nothing like Jacobson, a nice wide open field, with a few trees. We had 630 ft of line out, and its should be doable in practically all directions. Lift on Sat was very good. Congrats on the MVSA win. Re: [RCSE] New RCSE
Bon voyage, RCSE! I'm surprised that a Windows NT box made it this far, to tell you the truth. I'm surprised I haven't heard more griping, but it's like most of us on the RCSE knew that it was going to come down at some point. It had a good run and definitely kept me close to the hobby when my focus shifted elsewhere during the off season. But now we've got some new-fangled options out there. RCGroups, this ModelAircraftNews site, and the Google Group created by Dennis Hoyle. I understand al ot of the complaints about RCGroups. I myself don't check in on it as much as I should - and for good reason. It's a discussion based site, and cannot be used like the RCSE. People check RCGroups at their leisure while the RCSE gets sent directly to you. It's pull versus push, and the PUSH of the RCSE keeps people reading it. RCGroups excels when it comes to focused discussions on topics, and not news and notifications. But now, the MAN and Google Groups systems give us the option to continue that conversation, but with a few new gee-gaws and gadgets, like uploading media files and creating pages. Excellent opportunities that I think might get used quite a bit. But which to use? No disrespect to ModelAirplaneNews, but my choice is definitely Google Groups, and here's why: 1. It's more accessible - Easier to use - Easier to post to (via email or web) - Easier to read - I can either get it via email, the web or plug it into a news reader like the Google Reader that I already use. - Maintains that simple push style that drops the emails in my mailbox, and I don't have to check it constantly. 2. It's Google - It's not going away any time soon - It will be constantly upgraded Obviously, I'll follow whereever most people go, but I'd prefer Google :) Dennis wrote: I took it upon myself to create this Google Group to replace the soon to disappear RCSE. Re: [RCSE] New RCSE
And there is soaring at yahoogroups.com which has been carrying this lists traffic for sometime. Since there are already 1383 members to that list and it already carried this lists traffic, it would seem a more natural migration. It offers both email push for those of us that like that as well as a web interface. It would be my choice over RCgroups, MAN and google groups (which seems to require a gmail address). [RCSE] Old RCSE Posts
From: Tom Nagel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 2 Jan 1997 11:09:59 -0500 (EST) Subject: [RCSE] Thermal Vagrant Meets Bambi, sort of Thermal Vagrant Meets Bambi I have not been posting much here lately, due to the many activities of the season--Ohio's three week deer season. I've been spending about every other day out in the woods, up in a tree, communing with nature, reading paper backs and eating cold pop tarts. Altogether a quality wilderness experience. We had a strange deer season this year. It rained heavily the weekend before, and then stayed relatively warm, in the 30's and 40's, and windy. As a result, the autumn leaves were as soggy as a half-hour old bowl of corn flakes, and between that and the wind, you could not hear the deer moving. In Ohio, you hunt mostly with your ears, since you can't see much more than 40 or 50 yards in most of our woods. There could have been a whole herd of deer doing the Macarena right behind me, and I wouldn't have known it. And then there were the left handed deer. If you are up in a tree stand with a shotgun or muzzle loader (our basic choices here in Ohio) and a deer comes up on the wrong side of your stand, it is virtually impossible to turn around and shoot in the left handed direction. I saw a lot of left handed deer. So, after three weeks of off and on hunting, I still haven't fired a shot. What did I get out of all this? I had a nuthatch give me the hairy eyeball from six feet up, and then proceed to bomb me with nuts. Could have been worse. I got to watch a pair of Pilated Woodpeckers work over a dead tree, throwing chips like little red-headed chainsaws. I got to watch a young doe bound around in circles, doing six foot leaps in a meadow, trying to figure out what I was and what I was doing. (I was taking a leak in a groundhog hole, holding the wrong weapon at the time.) I had a couple of really nice naps in the woods, one on a six foot long flat rock blanketed with heavy green moss. (Well, why not? My wife says I make moose calls in my sleep.) I observed a long, drawn out, terratorial dispute between a fox squirrel and a gray squirrel. The little guy won. I ate lunch in four different restaurants where deer hunters are regarded as normal people. I got to see the witch hazel flowering among the rocks of my son's favorite lurking spot, and the bittersweet blooming a brilliant red in the tops of a scotch pine. I got the hell out of the office for most of three weeks! And I found out that my clients and the world get along just fine without me at my desk. And I got to see a lot of deer, either from the wrong side, or from the rear, or from 150 yards out. Or all of the above. So what is the soaring connection? Well, last summer one of my flying buddies, Adventures With Bill Hoelcher, said he was shocked to find out that I was both a deer hunter and a sailplane pilot. He said that sailplane flying was such a peaceful and gentle sport that he didn't see how the same person could be a deer hunter. Then I watched Bill enter a handlaunch contest and proceed to smash the cockpit off a couple of other planes by circling against the crowd in a thermal. I gotta get him out in the woods. And because of all the time I spent in the woods, I blew my 12 month flyer status. I didn't get out once in December. Although I did scout some nice Knox County slopes.. _ | Tom Nagel /O\ Columbus, OH - --(___)-- RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] RCSE Past Poems
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sun, 22 Dec 1996 15:08:05 -0500 Subject: [RCSE] A Christmas Carol 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the 'net, not a hard drive was whirring, it was quiet, you bet! When out of the modem there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my keyboard to see what was the matter. I booted the system and, and logged on to my sevice, I downloaded E-mail of volumes quite perverse. All postings were WACO, a name that's stupendous for stating the facts in ways that offend us. He cursed and he ranted, he call us bad names, and he made lots of fun of our silly airplanes. On Lucas, on Sal, on Richard, and Phil, on Gordon, on Daryl, on Steve and on Bill, he piled his abuse til they all had their fill. He's been hiding in Utah and hanging with Mormons, designing new stuff with a big box of Crayons. He's merry and laughing about things that aren't funny, and he's planning a new way to take all our money. He showed me the drawings for things quite outrageous and he cackled and howled, he might be contageous! I shuddered and grimaced and whimpered in fear. Could this be our fate for the coming New Year? In panic I logged off to end this attack, and his last words still haunt me. He said, I'll be back! - Merry Christmas to the Christians, Happy Hanukkah to the Jews, Muslims and Kwanza celebrators, enjoy the Government holidays. [RCSE] The posts that meant the most
I've been a participant of RCSE since its inception - just when did RCSE start, Mike? The posts that meant the most to me were the messages of encouragement I received when, as I was physically unable, my wife posted news of my onset of Gullaine Barre Syndrome. Those posts were a huge help to me at that time and during my lengthy recovery. Before RCSE shuts down, I'd like to thank everyone one more time. [RCSE] YA-RCSE
Yet another RCSE. Having enjoyed RCSE for a long time, I too decided to put an alternative up to the group. It is nearly identical to the original in format and function. It is just a plain old e-mail list with an optional digest, and it archives the traffic as well. It won't ever have any advertising (except for the wait-and-wail's from Gordy and others) and it isn't out there collecting data on you (big brother). A web based sign up page is here: http://www.ts3.org/mailman/listinfo/soaring You can also sign up the old way ( I think it even speaks html e-mail for sign up) by sending a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] take care, Kevin RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] The posts that meant the most
Jim, I'm trying to remember when I might have to dig up my old MAN Soaring Columns or ESL newsletters to see if I can find some kind of date. The oldest posts I have in my mail software are from 1996. I think it goes back at least to 1994. Jim Deck wrote: I've been a participant of RCSE since its inception - just when did RCSE start, Mike? Re: [RCSE] Migrating
So far there seems to be 3 replacements posted. Here's something to consider when migrating to a replacement for RCSE. One of the strengths of RCSE was that we all used our real names, not cutesy-poo nam de plumes. Let's continue that practice in what ever forum we wind up in. Jim Deck RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] In Memory of RCSE
My mail box for RCSE went from Gordy for President to In memory of RCSE. One thing I most remember are Chuck Anderson's stories of flying in the past. While I have been inactive for several years, I still have fond memories of many of the contributors to the exchange. Best to everyone, Tom Ernst RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Mid-Am OVSS #7
Hey guys, with one of the last gasps of RCSE, want to remind everyone about the Mid Am that is being held at the Kentucky Horse Park on September 67. They are flying seeded MOM, a first for BSS at the Mid Am, and we need to support their efforts. The KHP has lots of things going on every weekend and thisone is not any different, there is a museum, horse show going on and other activities, so Mom and kids do not have to watch sailplanes all day. I know they have an RCGroup listing under events and you can go to www.kentuckyhorsepark.com to see what is going on. Marc RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
