Thanks everyone! These all look quite useful.

Howdy yall,

So I’m curious if anyone has ever imported Excel spreadsheet data into
Softimage or Houdini?

I know that there is probably a greater chance that I could find a way export
the sheet as CSV data, and then bring in the data that way possibly by writing
a converter to sort the data into a collection or something, but I’m really
looking for some way to have the sheet drive the elements in the scene.
Essentially I’d prefer the sheet to be linked rather than imported so the data
can be easily replaced or updated.

The idea is to use the app to create a “3D Chart” driven by the sheet content.
I realize that it’s probably a reach with Soft but thought maybe Houdini might
have other options. I’m also looking at Unity as well, with the assets created
in Soft, Maya, or Houdini. I want the spreadsheet to be more a reference than
an import however, with the cell content used to drive chart elements such as
text, element position in space, or other characteristics.

Has anyone here ever done something like that? Soft, Houdini, and Unity are the
primary platforms being considered.

Re: very OT: FabricEngine simulated object deformer?

2016-11-14 Thread Thomas Volkmann
Thanks Eric!!

I started on friday to get into Max Creation Graph until I found out the hard
way that they don't have a undo implemented yet

http://3dsmaxfeedback.autodesk.com/forums/80695-general-feature-requests/suggestions/7734021-enable-undo-and-redo-in-mcg
(accidentally deleting the wrong nodes pretty much killed it for me).
The sample scenes you sent to me got me pretty far today, and it's probably just
a matter of knowing all the node names to get really comfortable...

cheers,
Thomas

RE: SI|3D Flashback

2016-11-14 Thread Brent McPherson
The volume deform was inspired by Grabber and the guy behind Grabber (who was
working at Softimage at the time and whose name I can't remember) was
supportive of our effort to replicate his plugin in XSI.

The company name was spelled Konshus IIRC. The design of XSI’s Volume Deformer
was indeed based on their Grabber plugin for SI|3D. Konshus also made a
sculpting tool called Smither (I think) and maybe another tool.

I think MetaMesh was from PhoenixTools.

Ah yes the Grabber! It became the Volume Deform in XSI. I thought it worked
better as a modeling tool in soft, but was a better deform tool in XSI.

Conscious also made the MetaMesh plugin if my memory serves me well. It was an
implementation of subd in Soft|3D.

Hey list,

a demo by Chinny and he's talking about some plugins. I remember many of them,
like PhoenixTools, Arete and the Ray Rebels stuff but I never heard of
"Conscious". They developed a plugin called Grabber, that seems it was
incorporated in XSI later on, as "Volume Deform". Ha, didn't know that!
Quite entertaining demo btw. Great foleys ;)

Re: Softimage 2014 SP2 - Crashing when opening material editor

2016-11-14 Thread Morten Bartholdy
Interesting. I have almost given up using the Material Manage on some projects
because it crashes XSI instantly - and I have shaderballs turned off. These are
usually what I consider dirty scenes with lots of data coming from Maya from a
non vfx pipeline, and I rarely have issues with stuff I create myself.
Bad headers is a thing to look for then, but given that I use Arnold texture
workflow it should not be an issue, unless there are leftovers somewhere in the
scene.
