RE: can I still get softimage?

2015-11-26 Thread Hsiao Ming Chia
Yes, both FBX 2014 & 2015 use the same version number 7.4.
And Softimage 2015 FBX export is compiled against FBX 2015 SDK.

Please find Crosswalk 2015 available as a zip/tar.gz on the download page.
However, the packages only contain .dotXSI plugins for Maya and 3dsMax 2015.
We are no longer providing FBX plugins for previous releases of Softimage.

Thanks,
Hsiao Ming

FBX 2014 & 2015 are using version number 7.4 correct? But Softimage 2015 FBX
export has been updated to (compiled against) the FBX 2015 SDK? Will this
update make it to the AD Crosswalk download page at some point-
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-crosswalk.html
The setup .exe for 2015 (for Softimage) is absent from the list.

If there is still time to get some eyes on the FBX exporter, it would be great
to have someone look at this old bug I submitted back in 2011. The short
version is Softimage writes tangent data to the vertex colors data block and
doesn't write vertex colors into the vertex colors block. Last I checked, no
fix was made for Crosswalk 2014. I was communicating with Yanick about the
problem in 2011... but a lot of seats changed places at AD, and this issue was
never fixed.

Feel free to email me at email[at]derekjenson.com if you need test cases. Would
be willing to test for a setup_Crosswalk_2015_windows.exe installer (linux
too!). You can download my old test case here-

Actually Softimage 2015 is using FBX 2015.
The export dialog only shows up to FBX 2014 because FBX 2015 is still based on
the same file version as FBX 2014.

Since there is almost no demand for Softimage any more it is possible that they
might not be familiar with the product and its availability so just take along
the reference numbers I posted earlier and they should be able to help you

Hi Derek,

Most of what you said is accurate. Just to be clear:

All upgrades were discontinued at the start of this year. Your only option
today is to purchase a new license of either Maya with Softimage or 3ds Max
with Softimage. You must do this before February 1st 2016 which is the start of
Autodesk's next fiscal year. At that point Softimage will be fully retired from
sales. Anyone can purchase the software, there is no requirement to already
have a license.

As I understand, my 2011sp2 license is not upgrade-able now? I can not convert

A Max/Maya 2016 plus Softimage 2015 product is available as a new purchase
only? And only to Softimage license holders (is that legal in the US,
restricting a product to a subset of people)?

And this transaction would need to happen before what date? January 1st, 2016?
February 1st, 2016? April 1st, 2016?

Thanks for the clarity!

"At the time I was quoted $2200 to bring my 2011 license up to 2015. However, I
would have received a Maya/Max & Softimage standalone license in place of my
network license, losing all my batch licenses."

That was wrong information by your reseller. You could have upgraded your
existing floating license to XSI2015 until the Feb 1st 2015 deadline. Remaining
all batch licenses because it was an upgrade of your existing network license.
The price sounds similar to what I was told at the time (in EUR). I upgraded my
network license from 2011 to 2015 in Nov 2014.

Subject: RE: can I still get softimage?

I've done my best to keep up with the details of 'upgrading' to Softimage 2015,
but still have a few questions; I have a network license of Softimage 2011sp2.

I likely should have upgraded when Autodesk still allowed upgrades, if I was
going to switch to another AD tool. At the time I was quoted $2200 to bring my
2011 license up to 2015. However, I would have received a Maya/Max & Softimage
standalone license in place of my network license, losing all my batch
licenses. I was also in mid production with 2011, so trying to look ahead 2
years in this industry is impossible; things change quickly. Parting with with
$$ for tools I can't use for at least a year just didn't make sense at the
time. And honestly, I feel like I've been trying to protect myself against
future AD decisions with the 'upgrade' offer... and that is not the
relationship I want with a vendor.

So as I understand it, all 'upgrade' offers are for standalone, correct?
And at this point there is no 'upgrade', they are simply offering a new
Max/Maya & Softimage bundle product to existing holders of Softimage licenses;
so I would retain my network 2011 license, correct?
In the US, this cost is $3600-3700?
And I could run both Softimage 2011sp2 and 2015sp2 at the same time, correct?
How has the license server changed from 2011 to 2015? It sounds like the client
needs to check-in with an AD server?
Blender is open source and free right? Just joking, I know the answer to that
one ;)

Any help with any of these questions is appreciated. My gut feeling is I will
not upgrade, but will switch to another tool. I also feel that AD is pushing
the monthly fee so I can easily pickup Max/Maya for a month here or there in
the future as needed and keep my thou$ands under my pillow.

That was wrong information by your reseller. You could have upgraded your
existing floating license to XSI2015 until the Feb 1st 2015 deadline.
Remaining all batch licenses because it was an upgrade of your existing
network license. The price sounds similar to what I was told at the time (in
EUR). I upgraded my network license from 2011 to 2015 in Nov 2014.

Just in case, you don't need to be a Softimage user to be able to buy a Maya

To the ppl with network licenses: You should try it, even the statement from
ADs website is pretty clear. I think the main (if not the only) reason for the
Feb 2015 deadline was because of subscription and the one year maintenance plus
the ability to upgrade to future versions (2016). If your gonna upgrade without
subscription there might be a little chance to get it, if it's a network
license.

Subject: RE: can I still get softimage?

It's hard to get information from AD in this regards and even resellers doesn't
seem to know exactly whats possible in some cases.

The following reflects my knowledge. You should verify it with your reseller to
make sure. Ask twice because sometimes, they may have outdated information or
want to sell something different from what you want :) I got wrong infos in the
first place from mine as well.

Upgrading existing licenses:

You can upgrade standalone and network licenses of Softimage to version 2015
from six version back (from version 2010 an up).

You can upgrade these licenses until Feb 2016. I did it end of last year and it
was around 2,500 EUR. Until mid 2014 it was a few hundred bucks less.

You cannot upgrade Softimage alone anymore, you have to choose the bundle. No
matter if you have network license or standalone.

Subscription isn't needed to upgrade an existing license.

Buying new licenses:

You *can* still buy additional licenses as an existing Softimage costumer until
Feb 2016. But it’s the same deal as with upgrading, you will need to buy the
bundle. AFAIK it's around 5,000EUR now.

Subscription isn't needed to buy additional licenses.

License management / flexlm:

flexlm had a few changes since 2010 but I used the old flexlm from xsi2011
(v11.7.0.0) with the new license file without problems. However if you're
running an even older version then you may need to update the flexlm. I had
this at a company when XSI2015 refused to start because they were running a
very old flexlm version. AD changed licensing check via flexlm internally
somehow.

You can combine your old license (xsi2011) and the new xsi2015 within one file.
So yes you can run both versions simultaniously and have all batch render lics
available as well as the mental ray lics. (5 per softimage seat plus the GUI
version, resulting in 6 batchrender licences if your not using the GUI. In your
case it would be two softimage versions at the same time and 10 batch render
lics. However, you cannot use the batchrender lics from 2011 for 2015 scenes of
course. Nor vice versa.

If the machine name and its'MAC ID didn't change for both versions just
copy/paste the new license text into the old file and restart flexlm. I'm not
sure about mixed server IDs in one file but instead you can just create a
second service for the new license and run both.

AFAIK flexlm doesn't check with AD servers, since it's designed to work in
closed environments. The companies license server or fileserver or wherever the
flexlm is running on, usually have no internet access.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Sven

2015-11-23 Thread Maurice Patel
You should still be able to purchase Autodesk Maya with Softimage. The product
reference is:

977H1-WWR11C-1001 - Autodesk Maya 2016 with Softimage Commercial New SLM ELD.

I did a quick check and it seems that its available here.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1154841-REG/autodesk_977h1_wwr11c_1001_vc_maya_with_softimage_2016.html

There is also a 3ds Max version too.

RE: can I still get softimage?

2015-11-23 Thread Sven Constable
I completely forgot about the Feb 2015 deadline. So I was wrong about
upgrading, sorry.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/account-management/software-downloads/current-version/current-version-policy-faq

However buying new network licenses is still possible but for the ridiculous
price of 5k bucks here in germany.

my reseller told me no more upgrades for any autodesk product since the January
2015 deadline (U.S.), on top of that, there is no longer a 1 month grace
period when paying maintenance (or whatever it is called now).

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Sven

my reseller told me no more upgrades for any autodesk product since the January
2015 deadline (U.S.), on top of that, there is no longer a 1 month grace
period when paying maintenance (or whatever it is called now).

In the US, this cost is $3600-3700?
And I could run both Softimage 2011sp2 and 2015sp2 at the same time, correct?
How has the license server changed from 2011 to 2015? It sounds like the client
needs to check-in with an AD server?
Blender is open source and free right? Just joking, I know the answer to that

Since autodesk licenses are restricted to where you purchased it, It will
depend on where your are.

In Japan, it's about US$6K + $1K for subscription. (I'm rounding the number, It
costs a little more than that) which I think is extremely expensive even if I'm
having 1 EOL package for free.

No matter where you are, It should cost as much as a Maya/Max license.

What is the cheapest/best way to get a license of soft? Or can I still even do
that? Last time I touched base with a reseller I had to buy the Suite which was
around $10,000 Canadian!

PDF: Softimage Last Release Announcement FAQ - Update

Quote:
"Customers who wish to purchase new or additional seats of Softimage
2015 can do so by purchasing either the Maya with Softimage or 3ds Max
with Softimage transition offerings. These offerings are available via
their local reseller and cannot be purchased through the Autodesk
e-store. Each transition offering, Maya with Softimage or 3ds Max with
Softimage, can be purchased as a new standalone license for the same
price as a standalone license of Maya or 3ds Max. Please note that after
the two-year transition period customers will no longer be able to
purchase or rent new Softimage licenses or rental plans of the Softimage
transition offerings from Autodesk. "
