Hi Gilles,

Many thanks for this. I added a 5 second delay and this did indeed
resolve the problem.

Thanks again,
regards,
Eddie

[speedtouch] Resource temporarily unavailable

2004-09-10 Thread Edward Chapman

Hi,

I have created a linux boot CD for bonded ADSL in the UK using Speedtouch
USB modems.
http://www.freestuffjunction.co.uk/bondedcd.shtml

I have a number of people using the latest version of the CD without any
problems to "bond" multiple ADSL lines using MLPPP. However, there is one
guy I'm trying to help at the moment who is trying to bond 4 ADSL lines
using 4 Speedtouch, and he's getting "Resource temporarily unavailable"
from PPP with two of the four modems like this:

Sep 6 17:05:54 CBI_UK modem_run[215]: modem_run version 1.2 started by
root uid 0
Sep 6 17:06:12 CBI_UK modem_run[216]: [monitoring report] ADSL link went up
Sep 6 17:06:30 CBI_UK modem_run[215]: ADSL synchronization has been obtained
Sep 6 17:06:30 CBI_UK modem_run[215]: ADSL line is up (2272 kbit/s down |
288 kbit/s up)
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[234]: Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.2b3/pppoatm.so
loaded.
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[234]: PPPoATM plugin_init
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[234]: PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[234]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:0.0.38
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[235]: pppd 2.4.2b3 started by root, uid 0
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[235]: connect(0.0.38): Resource temporarily
unavailable
Sep 6 17:06:32 CBI_UK pppd[235]: Exit.

We're using kernel mode driver, with the mainline 2.6.7 kernel, modem_run
v. 1.2.

I've seen this error message before on this list. Anyone know what is
causing the problem? Is it to do with firmware, with modem_run, with the
Speedtouch hardware itself, or a bug in USB kernel code? He is using a
D-Link PCI USB card which I know works as I use the same card myself with
2 Speedtouch and kernel 2.6.8.1.

All 4 Speedtouch report
Vendor=06b9 ProdID=4061 Rev= 0.00
in /proc/bus/usb/devices

If anyone can shed any light I'd be extremely grateful.

Many thanks,
Eddie

[speedtouch] Best way to keep up with kernel usb developments

2004-07-07 Thread Edward Chapman

I'm running a project at the moment which uses the Speedtouch for bonded
ADSL connections
http://www.freestuffjunction.co.uk/bondedcd.shtml

I'm trying to figure out, how do I keep a 2.6 kernel source tree that has
the latest *stable* USB stuff.

I recently cloned Greg Kroah-Hartman's tree using Bitkeeper

bk clone bk://linuxusb.bkbits.net/usb-2.6 usb-2.6

and have done a couple of syncs since then, but this will give me a
"bleeding edge tree", right?

On the other hand, the latest stable kernel 2.6.7 from
http://www.kernel.org/ won't have a lot of USB stuff that hasn't been
merged yet.

How can I keep a tree that's somewhere in between, with the latest stable
USB patches?

Is it a case of getting the latest stable kerne sources and applying the
patches from here as they appear?

The last two hunks of this patch failed on my 2.6.5 source, ot sure if
Ishould have been using a newer source or not.

Anyway, I ended up going back to 2.4.24, but after all that 2.6.5 suddenly
started working for the person I was helping and still works at the tie of
writing, so all ended well anyway :)

yes, you're right, it didn't, all the programs worked fine on the 2.4
kernel. The only thing I had trouble with was I compiled my 2.4 kernel
while running 2.6, and when I booted it my modules had unresolved symbols.
Then I saw somewhere you need to compile a kernel while running the same
version, so I cross-compiled from another 2.4 machine and then it worked.

[speedtouch] Re: Line monitoring

2004-04-23 Thread Edward Chapman

I was using the user mode driver in 2.4, then I moved to 2.6 a couple of
months ago and also to the kernel driver. I personally have had no
problems with it, but I've been trying to help a couple of other people
who both hit this problem.

I've created a boot CD for use with an ISP here in the UK that offers MLPPP
http://www.freestuffjunction.co.uk/bondedcd.shtml

It is based on 2.6.5 and it works for me but two other people who have
tested it have had problems.

I think I will try 2.4.25 or 24 and see if that improves things. Only
thing is I compiled modem_run using 2.6 headers, maybe I should start
again with 2.4 headers also.

[speedtouch] Re: Line monitoring

2004-04-23 Thread Edward Chapman

Haven't tried other kernels, but this is useful information to know.

Would you say (generally speaking) that many problems with the Speedtouch
losing sync at the ATM layer are because of USB code problems rather than
actually problems with the line (noise, etc..)?

Thanks Duncan,

This is very interesting, so there are problems with the uhci code in 2.6
kernels up to now? Are these general problems or something specific to
Speedtouch and line syncing?

[speedtouch] Line monitoring

2004-04-22 Thread Edward Chapman

I'm trying to help someone remotely get a reliable connection running.
Not sure which modem_run I'm using but it was CVS and the last Changelog
entry was 24th March 2004. We're using the 2.6.5 kernel driver.

We are able to establish a connection no problem, modem_run uploads the
firmware, ADSL line comes up, PPP establishes a connection fine.

But it then seems to die once we try pinging through the connection. We
then also get this in the syslog:

modem-run[150] [monitoring report] ADSL Link went down
immediately followed by
modem-run[150] [monitoring report] ADSL Link went up

Does this suggest the modem is losing sync at the ATM layer? If so, what
are the most likely causes of this? Is it hardware, software, or just
problems with the ADSL line, or potentially any one of these?

Many thanks,
Edward

[speedtouch] Multilink PPP works with Speedtouch Drivers

2004-02-28 Thread Edward Chapman

I've recently setup two ADSL lines 'bonded' together using a PC with
Linux, PPP with the 'multilink' option, and two Speedtouch modems with the
userland drivers and it works brilliantly. It is possible to do this now
in the UK with an ISP here called Nildram.

I've detailed the whole setup procedure here:

http://www.freestuffjunction.co.uk/bondedadsl.shtml

May be of interest to UK subscribers of the list or anyone interested in
using Speedtouch with a similar setup.

[speedtouch] Multilink Error with Kernel Driver

2004-01-04 Thread Edward Chapman

I have two ADSL lines with an ISP which supports multilink and two USB
Speedtouch modems on one box.

Using the kernel driver I can connect to both lines separately and
together fine. However, as soon as I add the 'multilink' option to PPP
option file, it stops working; I get a modprobe and an ioctl(SIOCSIFMTU)
error (see sys log below) when trying to connect the first line and ppp
dies, regardless of which line I try first.

Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[247]: Plugin usr/lib/pppd/2.4.2b3/pppoatm.so
loaded.
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[247]: PPPoATM plugin_init
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[247]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS
0.0.38
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[248]: pppd 2.4.2b3 started by root, uid 0
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[248]: PPPoATM set to VC multiplexing
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[248]: using channel 1
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[248]: Starting negotiation on 0.0.38
Jan 2 22:32:51 router modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[248]: ioctl(SIOCSIFMTU): No such device
Jan 2 22:32:51 router pppd[248]: Exit.

HOWEVER, if I switch to the user space driver, adding the multilink
option works fine, I can connect both lines and PPP bonds them together
as one without any problem.

Can anyone even suggest how I might troubleshoot/find out what the
kernel driver problem is, let alone fix it? There's nothing else in any
of the logs to give any clues apart from above, even with the debug and
kdebug 1 options. I'd like to use the kernel driver if poss.

I have all the kernel PPP options compiled as modules, and without the
multilink option ppp loads them all just fine, I don't know which module
it is complaining about.

PPP: ppp-2.4.2b3
Firmware: latest KQD6_R204.zip
