[speedtouch] Re: My system locks up under this driver !

2001-10-28 Thread CLOTILDE

Hi
Maybe a good new for you:
One problem people can face with USB when surfing actively ( lot of datas ) is the
powering of the USB.
The first led flashing red is a known symptom of a lack of power.
A known problem is happening with some VIA motherboard, which are not completely
according to USB specs. A bios patch is available on via web site.
But that doesn't seem to be your problem because you got a PCI additional card.
So the second solution is to use an external 4-ports usb device with power supply. It
costs around 250 FF here (less or more 4O $ US).

If it works for you, let us know.

  Hello Graeme,

  Few questions :

  - Do you have SMP enabled in your kernel or a multi-CPU machine?

No , SMP is disabled and it's a single CPU PC [Pentium-166].

  - Would you like to try the plain (good old ...) pppd 2.4.0 or 2.4.1?

 OKI have now tried pppd-2.4.0.

  - Is it modem_run or pppd that lockup your computer?
 I'm not sure.

  - Is your mouse a USB one ?

No, it is a serial one. SpeedTouch is my only USB device.

The simplest explanation I have is that pppd fails to make the connection
and that you do not have the HDL patch, that's why pppd launched pppoa2
again and again (which explain why the endpoint 7 can't be used) until
you have no more process/memory ...

So, remove the persist option in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl first, and check your
  configuration.

OK I have managed to make a connection after removing persist option in
 /etc/ppp/peers/adsl.
