[Spits] 1977 Spitfire FS Willow Grove, PA

2012-07-12 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

It's time for me to part with my 1977 Spit. Too many other
responsibilities along with an impending home sale/move are motivating this
sale. Sometimes life catches up with you in this way.

The particulars:
1977 Triumph Spitfire
117K miles
Runs and drives well, diff quiet
Interior
fair/fair+
Body fair, several dings and some surface rust. Some rust along
seam of left rear fender/body
Driver's side floor pan patched (metal)

Many
new parts, including new shocks, high torque starter
Has a header and quad
exhaust
Good tire tread
All electrics work

New PA safety/emission inspection
(7/12)
Fully licensed/insured...try to drive it once a week to work

Needs a
convertible top, some bodywork and paint

Basically this has been a project
car for me for a few years. It needs more work (see above) but the car is
quite usable and fun as it is. I've enjoyed it and it runs well. I really
like the shape of the Spitfire. You can drive it and enjoy it, or restore it.
Please let me know if you are interested or have questions, or send this note
along to someone who is.

Car is also listed on Craigslist Philadelphia
(includes pics).

My price is $1800.

Located in Willow Grove PA, approx 1
mile from the PA Turnpike. Very easy access.

Thanks,

[Spits] Rich Running

2011-06-15 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

Recently I rebuilt the Stromberg Carb on my '77 Spitfire. The rebuild went
well, I got everything installed and the car started up easily. However,
during tuning I have discovered that I cannot get the car lean enough. I
have the needle adjustment almost at the end (roughly 3 turns out) and the car
just won't lean out. The choke is off and the diaphragm is new and intact.
The ignition seems to be fine and the timing is set to stock specs. The plugs
are quite sooty. Anyone have any idea why I can't lean this out any more?

BTW, the carb is from an 70-74 spitfire.

Thanks for any input,

Re: [Spits] Sputtering when hot above 50 mph

2010-07-20 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
It could definitely be fuel starvation. But one question: Can you get the
car above 50 mph at any time?
The reason why I ask is that another thing to check would be the carb linkage.
 Make sure that the throttle plate can open all the way. Have an assistant
hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and then look down the carb throat.
 Both throttle plates should be fully open (they should both be vertical). If
this isn't the case, adjust the linkage accordingly.
This happened to me once with my '77. The car would not go above 45
mphseemed to run out of breath. It turned out the throttle cable slipped
(mis-tightened nut) and therefore the throttle plate would only open part-way.

Hope this helps,Matt Milkevitch'77 SpitfireWillow Grove, PA

My guess is that it isn't vapour lock - that's much more likely to happen
when the car is stationary and there isn't a flow of air to cool the intake
system.

Sounds to me much more like fuel starvation, which could be down to an
ineffective fuel pump, partially blocked fuel filter or carb, although I
can't think of any good reason why it should be worse when it is a warm day.

Another random thought - coil over-heating? But again can't see why this
would be worse at speed, or particularly when going up hills. So not too
likely.

Sorry I can't be more definitive...

[Spits] Rear Height

2010-07-02 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;
This afternoon, I attempted to adjust the rear brakes on my '77 Spit. When I
jacked up one side, I noticed that the wheel "tucked in" rather dramatically
(i.e., the bottom of the tire angled in toward the center of the
car...positive camber I believe). This was so dramatic that the half-shaft
actually touched the frame and the wheel wouldn't spin properly.
Is this normal...or is this the classic sign of a sagging rear spring?
I have worked on the rear suspension recently (over the winter), in which I
installed a used differential. While that was a long and involved repair,
nothing untoward happened with that.
Any advice/opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: [Spits] (no subject)

2010-06-19 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
I replaced this very same brake pipe a few weeks ago. I purchased the pipe
from TRF, and it came with all correct fittings. I had to bend it to fit, but
with a lot a patience (and reference to the old pipe) I was able to
successfully do it. I would advise purchasing a pliers-type brake pipe bender
from Eastwood (or perhaps you can get it elsewhere) and I also used a pipe
bender that enabled 180 degree smooth bends (purchased from McMaster-Carr) to
be made.

[Spits] Stuck Rear Trunion Bolt

2010-04-11 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;
I hope everyone has had a pleasant day enjoying their Spitfires. The weather
today in the Phila PA region has been very nice for top-down motoring.
While working on my Spitfire's rear suspension, I have encountered a very
stuck left rear trunion bolt. I've banged on it a while and it refuses to
budge.
My next idea is to heat the bolt and see if it will come free. Does anyone
else have a suggestion to free up this bolt? If it won't come free I'll be
forced to look for a used unit.
If I remember correctly, another lister also encountered this problem very
recentlyso perhaps there's someone out there with some ideas for this
issue.

[Spits] U-joint replacement

2010-01-01 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;
I hope everyone had a pleasant New Year's.
At present, I am finishing up a differential swap on my '77 Spit. Glad it's
almost done.
While bolting everything up, I noticed that the u-joint on the driver's side
half-shaft is coming out of the yoke about 1/8" on one side.
I assume this u-joint will require replacement. I have replacement units on
hand.
Question: How easy is this repair? I have not done any work on axles before.

Any advice would be appreciated!

[Spits] Differential Installation

I am in the process of installing a used Diff in my '77 Spitfireand it's
quite the job. I have been able to get the rear mount in (the long bolt), but
I'm having some trouble getting the front mounts to bolt up.
I am installing polyurethane bushings in this install, so I'm sure the reduced
pliability of these bushings are contributing to this problem.
I wanted to solicit any tips/advice on this installanyone "been there,

[Spits] Spitfire Differentials

2009-12-05 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;
This afternoon I removed the differential from my '77 Spitfire, for it was
getting very noisy under load. I have several used differentials available to
swap in (four actually), however I noticed that one of them is different than
the rest. It has a drain plug on the bottom and it has 6 holes for the
mounting studs.
I'm assuming that this differential is from an early Spitfire. I have no idea
from what car it came from, since I acquired it through a large parts deal.
My question: are all Spitfire differentials interchangeable? I know that the
early units had different ratios, but will a an early unit mount up to my
'77?

Fellow Listers;
I have recently completed the installation of a Weber 32/36 DGV conversion

1) What is the best fuel pressure for the Weber 32/36 DGV?

2) What fuel pumps are you running (stock mechanical or aftermarket electric)?

3) Are you running a fuel pressure regulator?

[Spits] TR7 Wheels on a Spitfire

2009-07-12 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;
A fairly recent post on this list mentioned that Triumph TR7 wheels will fit a
Spitfire, with some modifications to the lug holes. I addition, I found a link
on Paul Tegler's website that goes into more depth on this.
Today I mounted one of my TR7 wheels on my Spitfire and I really liked the
look. Also, the tire is wider than the stock Spit tire. My question to the
list: is anyone currently running TR7 wheels on their Spit? And if so, can
you comment on any performance enhancement?

[Spits] Rubber Seal Residue

2008-06-17 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Hello Listers:
First of all, thanks to everyone who informed me of what tire
pressures they are running.
Secondly...I would like to solict some comments
on the following. Some time ago, I replaced the outer window seals on my
'77. These are the rubber seals that "scrape" the outside of the drivers and
passengers windows.
Since their installation, I've noticed that if I clean
these seals, a blackish residue is left on my cleaning rag...and also on the
body work of the car.
Has anyone else observed this? Is there any way to
clean this residue complete off/out of the seal?

1500 Spitfire radiator

2005-07-17 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Hello Listers;

Does anyone out there have a decent (i.e., not "toasted" and leaky) 1500
radiator they'd be willing to part with?? This will be going into a '75
Spitfire 1500. If so, please notify me off list.

Thanks for your time,
Matt Milkevitch

Spitfire Fuel Pressure

2005-07-01 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Hello Listers;

Would anyone happen to know what the fuel pressure on a '77 Spitfire should
be?? My Spit seems to be always flooding out even though I've reset the float
level correctly (SU HIF44). I measured the fuel pressure and it's about 3.5
lbs.

Thanks in advance,
Matt Milkevitch

SU HIF44

2005-02-07 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

My '77 Spitfire has a SU HIF44 that needs rebuilding...does anyone happen to
know if the jet in that carb is the same as the SU HIF4?? Off-hand, I suspect
not. I can get a rebuild kit from Mini Mania but it's pricey. Rebuild kits
for the HIF4 are much cheaper.

Thanks,

Wire Wheel Needed

2005-01-12 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

Would anyone have a decent bolt-on wire wheel they'd like to part with?? It
needs to be uncracked but a little curbing is OK, a couple of bad spokes are OK
(I've got spares). Please drop me a note off-list if you have one.

Wiring question: Thanks and one more question

2004-09-13 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Hello Listers;

Thanks for all the input on the placement of the battery ground cable. I hooked it up
tonight and now I'm proceeding to other wiring. I do have two more questions:

1) There is a 3-prong plug on the wiring harness in the engine compartment. The wires
leading to it are:
wht/blue
wht (all white)
wht/black (I think it's black...)
Does anyone know where this should be hooked up? I believe this should hook up to
some wires for the distributor and ballast resistor. My car has the Crane ignition
system, so these should not be needed. Just wanting to confirm.

Thanks for all the help!

Regards,
Matt Milkevitch

Wiring Question

2004-09-13 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

I am currently re-assembling my '77 Spitfire, which I bought as a rolling shell.
Using parts from a '78 parts car and sourcing others, I am 75% done. Over the weekend
I installed a motor I bought a couple of years ago, along with a used trans.

I had a brief question about wiring. Where does the battery negative cable ground
to?? On my parts car, the negative cable was removed. Being new to Spitfires I am
unsure as to where it goes. I believe it might attach to the trans bellhousing, but
I'm not sure.

Thanks for the help!

Matt Milkevitch

2004-09-05 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Dear Philly Area Listers;

Would anyone have a clutch kit (pressure plate and disc) for a '77 Spit that they are
willing to part with, and be home tomorrow (Labor Day, Monday Sept 6th) and willing to
let me come pick it up?? Just trying to get my motor installed over this nice 3 day
weekend, and I discovered today that my disc is completely knackered. If so, please

Floorpan removal/ installation

2003-12-01 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

During the Thanksgiving holiday, I had to opportunity to work on the floorpans on my
'78 Spit. As is typical, several portions of both floorpans have rust holes, with the
portion directly below the driver's feet being totally rusted out. I am therefore
considering totally replacing the left side (driver's) floorpan, since patching it may
be counter-productive. I am interested in hearing other lister's experiences with
floorpan removal and installation...any tips/tricks and other advice?

Thanks for your help,
Matt Milkevitch

Paint thinning revisited

2003-07-23 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers,

Thanks for all the responses thus far. I did examine the can at first, but no
information was given...I will consult my supplier and see what they say. BTW, the
paint is acrylic enamel.

Thanks for the responses,
Matt

Paint Thinning

2003-07-23 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Fellow Listers;

Does anyone have an idea on what ratio to thin automotive paint? I recently purchased
a quart of BRG for my '78 Spit and I need to shoot some patchwork I did in the trunk
area. Does 1:1 (vol/vol) paint/reducer work, or should I shoot for thinner than
that??

Thanks,
Matt Milkevitch

Spitfire 4-Speed Tranny needed

2003-03-05 Thread Matthew Milkevitch
Hello Listers;

Would any lister local to me have a decent Spitfire
4-speed they would be willing to part with? I need a
spare for my '78 Spit project. I live in the
Philadelphia PA Metro area (Willow Grove to be exact).
I have a lead on two but they are located in Missouri,
and I imagine shipping from there will be pricey.

Please contact me off list should you have an
available unit.

Radiator Retrofits

2002-08-20 Thread Matthew Milkevitch

Good Evening Listers;

Does anyone know of a low-cost radiator retrofit for a '78 Spit? I am contemplating a
new unit and find the $300 price a bit prohibitive. I researched the one from a early
80s VW, but unfortunately the inlet/outlets are on the same side of the radiator (but
the size and price were good).

Thanks,

Matt

Brake Master Cylinder Swaps

2002-08-01 Thread Matthew Milkevitch

Hello Listers;

A couple of weeks ago (I believe) a lister wrote in
about a possible solution to the high price of a new
brake master cyl (i.e., some type of alternate
retrofit). I have since misplaced that original
message. Would the person who originally made that
post pls contact me off list ? I am interested in
obtaining some information.

Thanks,

Thanks to All - Engine seizure issue

2002-07-25 Thread Matthew Milkevitch

Fellow Listers;

A big thanks to all who responded about my seized
engine/rusty cyl bores issue. I appreciate your time
and I found the recommendations helpful.

The suggestions I received centered around two
approaches:  1) complete teardown/rebuild, 2)  find a
decent used motor for a transplant.

I am considering these options at this time, and have
a couple of additional questions

1) For those who may have recently completed a rebuild
on a 1500, could you supply me a ballpark figure on
your cost?

2) Would anyone have a decent, non-seized used 1500
motor that they 'd like to part with?

Again, thanks for everyone's time and I look forward
to further consultations with list members.

Introduction and Opinions Needed (long-ish)

2002-07-23 Thread Matthew Milkevitch

Fellow Listers;

Since I am a new Spitfire owner and a new member of this list, I'd like to take this
opportunity to introduce myself and ask for some advice. My name is Matt Milkevitch
and I reside in Willow Grove PA (north of Philadelphia). I have lived in the
Philadelphia Metro region for about 3 years, but I'm originally from Virginia. I
currently work at the University of PA School of Medicine. I am currently the owner
of 3 LBCs, 2 MGBs (yes, MGBs) and the Spitfire. While not an exclusive Triumph
afficionado, I have always loved Triumphs and MGs, and have a general fondness for all
British marques.

I acquired the Spitfire about 1 month ago (its a '78), I got it for a song ($100) from
a local repair shop that wanted it off their lot. The car is complete and the
body/frame is sound. It does need some work, such as a new interior and top, along
with new paint. Some rust is present, but its mainly surface and no deep rot is
evident. It is currently not running. While looking over the car prior to purchase, I
discovered that the motor was stuckhence the price (the guy originally wanted
$500, but didn't know the motor was stuck).

The car is at home and I've been working on it, trying to free up the engine. I got
it to turn, but it only turns over about half-way. I removed the cylinder head in
order to perhaps more fully diagnose the problem and I believe that it will not turn
over because there is a fair amount of rust on the sides of #3 cylinder. I think that
once the piston rings encounter this rust the piston sticks and hence the engine will
not turn over further.

Question 1: Its clear that this rust needs to be removed, what would be the best way
to go about it? Fine steel wool, scotch-brite?

Question 2: Once the rust has been removed and the piston is free...does it sound
reasonable to clean out the motor as much as possible and attempt to get it running?
Perhaps the "better" suggestion would be to pull the motor, disassemble it and have it
hot-tanked.

Thanks for all your help/suggestions. Any listers from the Philadelpia PA region?

Regards,

Matt Milkevitch
