Am I missing something really obvious?

The nightly build you referenced hasn't helped at all, so I'm still

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Synchronization problems, recently

2019-12-02 Thread stephenkca

Thank you Paul and bpa for your responses!

The problem seemed to go away on its own, and I thought it had perhaps
been a networking hiccough. (The Squeezebox Classic that was out of
synch is in an area that would be difficult to run network cable to, so
I use wifi for that device. But it's also on the outside of the original
2 foot thick granite fieldstone outside wall, so the best wifi signal is
in a line of sight through a doorway. I can manage 80% if the device and
router node are positioned just so.) But I had more problems last
weekend, the device started repeatedly rebooting, and once I replaced
the power supply it was happy again. So my current hypothesis is that
the marginal power supply had something to do with the synchronization
issue.

The principles are always the same but the choice of equipment to do it
makes the specifics totally different almost on a case by case basis.

Basics
You need a VPN server either on you router or elsewhere in your network
with the appropriate ports forwarded to that device.
You need a publicly addressable IP address or a DynamicDNS address.
You need some client software on your phone/device that will talk to the
VPN server in the right language / protocol.

General advice.
Forget PPTP - its insecure and won't work on Apple devices or Macs.
This leaves you with a choice of L2TP (various types), ipsec or openVPN.
What does your router VPN Server support?

The 'honourable people in charge' of this forum give a huge amount of
their time and expertise to keep the Squeezebox experience going. The
software is no longer developed by Logitech and is very much a community
affair and even the seemingly simple task of writing documentation takes
a lot of time and effort. The general advice from those in the know is
not to remote access LMS even if it is password protected, but if it
must be done then use a VPN or SSH. I would imagine that there are too
many different routers and VPN services to be able to give definitive
guidance by way of a guide - you hit the nail on the head when you say,
'...in spite of lots of research - instructions are often outdated,
based on old firmwares, depend on which router you have etc.'

In my experience there are many people on this forum willing to chip in
and help where they can. They do so voluntarily. My suggestion is that
you ask specific questions and try to narrow down your queries.
Technology can be very rewarding and yet extremely frustrating at the
same time! Stick at it and you eventually puzzle it out. In my own case
I have found that depending on what I am remoting in from I have to
either use the address 192.168.xxx.xxx:90xx or use 192.16.xxx.xxx:90xx.

First things first, are you able to establish a connection via VPN to
your home server irrespective of whether you can access LMS? If you are
able to connect, what is the address (or format of the address) you are
trying to connect to? Give as much specific information as you can.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Remote streaming password security

2019-12-02 Thread echable

I really wish there were detailed, updated instructions on how to access
via VPN or SSH tunnel.

I spent days reading (the wrong) instructions, finally managed to set up
a VPN server on my Asus router that exports a .ovpn file that you then
import into e.g. the Android OpenVPN Connect app. This way, I can access
e.g. from 4G mobile network my IP addresses at my home network.

However, all my equipment are also VPN clients, of
privateinternetaccess.com, that encrypts traffic for ISP, provides
geolocation etc.

The Asus router has functionality for running both a VPN server and
being a VPN client at the same time, but I could never get it to work in
spite of lots of research - instructions are often outdated, based on
old firmwares, depend on which router you have etc.

In the LAN - DHCP server config page of my Asus Merlin router, now when
I currently have the VPN server running, it says "* In conflict with the
VPN server settings:192.168.1.2-31". Which is weird because I have not
specified that address range for my VPN server, see below.

So I think I've got to the point where I've narrowed down the problem to
something to do with subnets ? Like some routers follow the 192.168.1.X
scheme, others the 10.0.0.1 or whatever it is. The VPN server on the
router now has, after I followed yet another set of instructions, the
"VPN Subnet / Netmask" listed as the 10.0.0.1 system - which, as far as
I've read, avoid conflicts with the 192.168.1.X system the router itself
follows, yet at the same time allows clients connected to the router VPN
server to communicate with those on the other subnet - otherwise it
would be pointless, wouldn't it. Any pointers about this ? Surely there
is someone here with an Asus router with Merlin software that has done
this before, especially since everyone keeps saying "use a VPN for LMS"
?

Didn't know an SSH tunnel also was an option. Any suggested links for
reading into that in a way that would be relevant for how I should set
it up to securely access LMS remotely ?

I strongly encourage the honourable "people in charge" of this forum and
the LMS documentation etc. to provide instructions on the site on how to
set up secure, remote LMS access.

Thank you very much for your help.
