Same problem here! Now that Internet is back (it was a network problem
from my ISP), LMS is reachable again. I will try to manually disconnect
the WAN port and disable Spotty.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server 8.2.0 released

2021-08-12 Thread Michael Herger

I keep a friend's system running that is running Ubuntu 18.04 and want
to upgrade it to 8.2.0 - is an uninstall and reinstall required? It'd be
nice to keep the configuration and not do it from scratch.

I think the first thing you should think about has nothing to do with
LMS: a backup strategy. If you had a backup, you wouldn't have to worry
too much about the configuration ;-).

So... grab a copy of the prefs folder (see Settings/Information) to get
started.

Usually you should be able to simply install the new version on top of
the old one.

If that didn't work, I believe an uninstall would leave the
configuration in place. But I'm not 100% sure for all Linux system.
Therefore the backup of your files, from which you can restore it if needed.

About the points 1 and 2. I’ll do that. it’s reasonable.

About the last sentence I’ve already tried with the following result:

How about the following clarifications that will help others understand
what to do:

1. State that the build presented is an example, and that followers of
the instructions to get the current stable release that can be found at
...
2. Clarify the tools and CPAN libraries should come from a fork.

It seems like we should get mherger to merge in your CPAN updates.

Can you tell that I'm a big believer that forks should be temporary, and
that we should try as much as possible to get our improvements into
upstream so it becomes a matter of, "Take the current latest release"
instead of, "I have to maintain my fork for all time."

That's unlikely to happen because it would mean that for every new
release of every dependencies I should update all the link every time,
the guide is still a valid example.
My main focus is to make the prebuild package stable and updated
constantly since I don't see the point to compile everything by hand
every time there's an update

[alac] = alac_decoder. It is not used because it makes impossible to
start a track from whatever timestamp. It is just a temporary fix until
I'll release the update if you need to listen to alac files.

What tool is that exactly? Is it the alac_decoder tool that, in the
reply from Ralphy, he says is not used?

If so, maybe we should review if a fork of faad is strictly necessary if
we have a stand-alone converter available for ALAC format. Getting the
ALAC code into faad became more difficult with the upstream rewrite of
the mp4 parser.

Ralph: Is there a developer thread where discussions about decisions
like,"forked faad vs. stand-alone ALAC tool" are discussed?

Super kudos to the team. Thanks so much for keeping our systems running

The slimserver vendor repository contains all the perl modules and the
binaries.
At the moment all the perl modules in the official repository are
following the philosophy ""if it works don't touch it".
While sometimes this may work I don't really share this pov. Because
when something will start to not work anymore, since it will be severly
outdated, it will be a real pain to fix it. Due to this a made a fork
here https://github.com/simonefil/slimserver-vendor and updated pretty
much all the perl modules used by LMS (and, Q.E.D., it has been a real
pain).
In the next days I will update also the source for the binaries used,
faad2 included. (Both on github and in the FreeBSD package)

For a very quick fix while I work on the update, to be able to listen to
ALAC files you just need to edit the conver.conf files and change the
transcoding lines for ALAC in this way:

For alac -> wav

Code:

  alc pcm * *
# FT:{START=-j %s}U:{END=-e %u}
[alac] $FILE$

for alac -> mp3

Code:

  alc mp3 * *
# FB:{BITRATE=--abr %B}D:{RESAMPLE=--resample %D}T:{START=-j
%s}U:{END=-e %u}
[alac] $FILE$ | [lame] --silent -q $QUALITY$ $RESAMPLE$ $BITRATE$ - -

for alac -> flac

Code:

  alc flc * *
# FT:{START=-j %s}U:{END=-e %u}D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d}
[alac] $FILE$ | [sox] -q -t wav - -t flac -C 0 $RESAMPLE$ -

Closing this as resolved (very late, I know) . . .
This may help someone else who has the same problem.
I bought my SOtM SMS-200 network player second-hand, and the previous

Downloading a new image of the eunhasu OS used by this player gave me a
clean install of LMS.
This clean install fixed all my problems with cover art. If you're
