Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 8.2 for PPC Synology (DS 213+)

2022-03-23 Thread cfuttrup

Hi Michael

Synology stopped supporting LMS. :-(
As far as I know, the way to go forward is to use a Docker container
with LMS, but AFAIK this is only supported on Intel CPU's.
Your DS213+ has a Freescale P1022 CPU and AFAIK a Docker LMS solution is
not supported for this machine (I could be wrong).

How about buying a Raspberry Pi and installing LMS on it? ... You can
have it point to your music collection on the DS213+ NAS.
One way is to install piCorePlayer and disable the 'player' part, please
see : https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/install_lms/

Best regards,
Claus

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] C-3PO plugin, a trnscoding helper.

2021-05-14 Thread cfuttrup

Hi,

Today I decided to enable the C-3PO transcoder. The plan is to have my
(original) Squeezebox Touch (with AKM 4420 DAC) receive an upsampled
signal. I'd like to try the 'intermediate' filter.

The problem is that when I play music, only white noise comes out. I see
it was discussed a few pages back:
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?105309-C-3PO-plugin-a-trnscoding-helper/page21

In LMS Settings, second page = 'Player' - I can choose my Squeezebox
Touch and then the C-3PO Transcoding Helper page.
Here I read 'Player is not squeezelite' ... of course, this is not a
piCorePlayer.

Right now it's playing, because I have specified 44.1 kHz and 16 bit
only, but that means I have no upsampling of the CD source material. The
Touch-DAC supports up to 24 bit and 96kHz (AFAIK). I think I have EDO
installed on the Touch, but AFAIK that's for digital output only.

Is there anywhere I can read what settings should work with the Touch,
and provide the desired upsampling (and ca. 3 dB attenuation to allow
for intersample overs) ?

Best regards,
Claus

I am running the last LMS provided by pinkdot on my Synology. Once I
need a newer version, I'll either have to dig into installing LMS in a
docker container on the NAS, or alternatively as you propose, run a
piCorePlayer with LMS on a Raspberry Pi - the music files can stay on
the NAS.

Hi Ronnie et al. - I think Paul gave us a nice answer, but on another
thought - I don't think that the advanced stream from multiple sources
of audio (simultaneously) is desirable in an audio streamer product like
piCorePlayer, because you will then experience various sounds from
various sources (e.g. system 'ding' sounds) occurring in your audio
stream ... not nice when listening to your favorite music.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A server for us

2020-05-16 Thread cfuttrup

Thank you to all for the quality feedback.

Thank you Greg for reminding me that Squeezelite can be disabled. I
haven't thought about that. Presumably then the 'player' doesn't exist
and doesn't show up in the list of players - which is what I want.

About the UPS, some of us might feel we can just go in and fix a
problem, if it shows up, but I much prefer no problems at all, hence the
UPS. My feel for the USB based power supply to RPis is that they're a
bit sensitive to connection failure. The trick is to shut down LMS
nicely, but again without experience I am just assuming this is easily
implemented with a script - most UPS's communicate over the I2C port. It
will require a small (tiny) hack.

Technically one wouldn't need a shutdown button, since pulling the plug
will trigger the UPS to execute a soft shutdown... but if the UPS comes
with a button, I'd accept and drill a hole in the case for it.

I agree one could just keep the music collection on a NAS, but I also
like the idea that with the server (with storage) and the player, one
can bring these two devices to other places (family and friends,
vacation homes, Hi-Fi show rooms). Just plug the devices in and connect
over a simple network (a switch should do).

I like the idea of two USB-pens and one of them as failover ... I guess
this is the only part, which isn't straightforward in the current
piCorePlayer-based server.

Is there any way to manage your music collection on piCore'Server' ... ?
... I'm thinking about something user friendly, maybe GUI based?

Best regards,
Claus

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A server for us

2020-05-14 Thread cfuttrup

With Synology officially discarding support, I wonder what happens when
my DiskStation needs replacement?

Could a Raspberry Pi server (not player) loaded with LMS be designed and
built?
Would it be posible to make something Tiny Core / piCore based, but not
a player, maybe name it piCoreServer?

Since LMS requires a nice shutdown, a hardware 'requirement' (or at
least strong recommendation)
could be to attach a UPS with a small battery. The UPS must support
'soft' shutdown, such that
the LMS database survives. Something with just one minute of battery
operation is required.

I like PiJuice a lot, but is this product on the way out of the market?
PiJuice is maybe a bit expensive, and replaced by lower-cost
alternatives?
Let me know if you have any information about this.
The idea of a product that doesn't require any battery service, e.g.
with supercaps, sounds attractive to me.

Other than that, this LMS server solution requires some sort of storage
support, either with a good
size USB SSD - is it available in a pen format? Reliability is king. Can
we support two
disks (a primary and a backup w. failover that is normally inactive
during reading and therefore with less wear)?
If yes, maybe lower cost flash drives are OK.

On the server side, it should be easy to administrate your music
collection and rescan.
Preferably easy to upload music, maybe easy to delete certain music, if
unwanted, etc.

Anything else server-side, which is desirable? Maintenance options? Easy
software updates?

We don't need an audio card, since this is a server that I'll stove
away.

Is any sort of display and/or loudspeaker (for acoustic information)
required or desired?

It's just a suspicion on my part, nothing solid.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Lms ram

2020-02-07 Thread cfuttrup

Hi there,

Today I logged in and could see my Synology NAS is using a lot of RAM
(86%). Resource Monitor shows that LMS 7.9.2 is using 1.1 GB (next
contender was using 40 MB, so LMS is the only real user). The machine
uptime is 47 days.

Is there any reason why LMS would require so much RAM? ... Does LMS
manage its RAM use and dump whatever is necessary to prevent a crash?

Should I occasionally restart LMS?

I'd like to chime in here - as I agree with Marco a lot. In particular
that the Extremus filter is pushing it quite a lot. How about a

Right now I'm using Squeezelite (libsox) with the following upsampling

I think this answers my questions - so using C-3PO for upsampling on the
server side is recommended if/when the alternatives have a lower than
64-bit data path. If the SoX implementation in piCorePlayer is also
running 64 bit, then they should be equally good. I'm running
piCorePlayer on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, which has a 64 bit ARM
processor ... but I'm not sure if this also means that the SoX library
uses 64 bit.

I'm surprised there should be a difference, since both implementations
use SOX, as far as I understand. Anyone care to explain the differences

About your question on bit depth. The advantage of adding bits is that
when you use digital (e.g. software) volume control, then the added bits
are used to reduce rounding errors.

Meanwhile, I found that bit-perfect volume control requires that you add
some bits ... so that if f.eks. Squeezelite uses 32 bit representation,
it should be able to do bit-perfect volume control, as explained here:

Hi Greg - The ApplePi is currently sitting in customs (6 days now). Will
let you know how it goes. I am also heading in the direction convenience
with software volume control, but there's no need for multiple controls
to each contribute with signal errors, so I guess I'll think a bit
harder ... :-)

Hi DJanGo - I don't try to misunderstand the terms, and don't mean to be
talking audiophoolishly, but my sense is that the digital signal is
treated as such (in digital bits and bytes). There is a major difference
between this, and then running some floating point calculations (with
rounding errors).

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS Volume control

2018-12-09 Thread cfuttrup

Hi there

I've purchased a RaspberryPi with the 7 inch Touch Display and am
planning to install a DAC board, etc. to end up with a Squeezebox Touch
replacement.

When I installed piCorePlayer on the RPi I was asked about output and I
could see that ALSA defaults to + 3-4 dB (or something like that) and
that I'd have to choose 96% to get 0 dB out, which I did.

Suddenly I realize there's at least 4 different ways to control the
volume, and I'm wondering - in which way does the LMS control it? Is it
a "bit-perfect" reduction, or is it scaling in percent (not
digital-friendly) ... and is dithering used, or not? Does LMS also
"boost" output 3-4 dB at 100% ??

Thanks for any response that can make me a bit wiser as to what's going
on. Pointers to previous discussions is definitely OK (I did a search
both here and with Google, without finding answers).

P.S. I purchased the ApplePi DAC + Volume-Clocker, and the volume part
controls the volume in a "bit-perfect" way, which presumably means it of
course reduces output bits when you turn down the volume, but there's no
quantization noise, etc. I find that I can control volume in LMS, as
well as in piCorePlayer with the ALSA mixer, and now with the digital
Volume-Clocker + finally I can also use the (analog) volume control on
my integrated amplifier.

Best regards,
Claus
