With Synology officially discarding support, I wonder what happens when my DiskStation needs replacement?
Could a Raspberry Pi server (not player) loaded with LMS be designed and built? Would it be posible to make something Tiny Core / piCore based, but not a player, maybe name it piCoreServer? Since LMS requires a nice shutdown, a hardware 'requirement' (or at least strong recommendation) could be to attach a UPS with a small battery. The UPS must support 'soft' shutdown, such that the LMS database survives. Something with just one minute of battery operation is required. I like PiJuice a lot, but is this product on the way out of the market? PiJuice is maybe a bit expensive, and replaced by lower-cost alternatives? Let me know if you have any information about this. The idea of a product that doesn't require any battery service, e.g. with supercaps, sounds attractive to me. Other than that, this LMS server solution requires some sort of storage support, either with a good size USB SSD - is it available in a pen format? Reliability is king. Can we support two disks (a primary and a backup w. failover that is normally inactive during reading and therefore with less wear)? If yes, maybe lower cost flash drives are OK. On the server side, it should be easy to administrate your music collection and rescan. Preferably easy to upload music, maybe easy to delete certain music, if unwanted, etc. Anything else server-side, which is desirable? Maintenance options? Easy software updates? We don't need an audio card, since this is a server that I'll stove away.
