Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Error message when launching LMS from desktop icon

2019-12-26 Thread reinholdk

You shouldn't need to start LMS via your desktop shortcut. LMS is
running already as shown in the status message in your screenshot (and
as the "Abort scan" button indicates, it was scanning your library for
new and changed files).

You have chosen the startup option "Automatically run at login" so LMS
will start when you're logging in to your computer. Usually it's
recommended to choose the startup option "Automatically run at system
start" so LMS is running even if you're not logged in.

As the message in red indicates, you didn't open the LMS control panel
with admin rights. This applies to LMS startup options "Automatically
run at login" or "Automatically run at system start" where admin rights
are required to start & stop LMS.

To start the LMS control panel with admin rights either follow the
instructions given in this message or click on the LMS icon in the
system tray and select "Open Control Panel as Administrator".

Have you tried what the red writing proposed to do?
I’m not familiar with LMS under Windows BTW but that sounds promising.

No. stream.mp3 is mp3
The file types is used in conjunction with the info provided to LMS by
the player hardware.
Original SB devices only ever played mp3
Later SB devices added other formats so it was necessary for the player
to tell LMS what it can decode. LMS will then obey file types and
transcode if not supported.

Well, hallelujah. I found the flac package here for Ubuntu

https://packages.debian.org/stretch/amd64/lame/download

and after installing, restarting LMS and a few missteps - I am streaming
FLAC files on VLC (I had to use a url that ended with /stream.mp3 but
even so)

Thank you SO MUCH.

Attached is a screenshot of the "file types" page showing FLAC will
still be played as FLAC when it can be (NATIVE) -- ??

and converted via lame to mp3 when flac can't be played.

I assume this means my Squeezebox will still play the flac files as flac
files - but I don't know. Yes, no? I assume LMS does the conversion so
will it know not to convert the flac files when I play via the
Squeebox?

Thanks again and sorry for being so wordy.

You're right - it's greyed out. Installing lame on Ubuntu Media Server
18.04 is not so simple - not as simple as

Code:

  apt-get install lame

I keep searching for the "how to".

I think that LMS is usually configured to use it to convert flac to mp3

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] error message attempting to stream flac file

2019-07-13 Thread gmachine_24

Hi. I run LMS on an Ubuntu 18.04 media server. It works fine when I
stream to my Squeezebox.

Sometimes I want to stream to a desktop/laptop using VLC. Playing MP3
files is never a problem.

Playing flac files never works.

I've posted at the VLC forum; but wanted to post here as well the result
from the LMS server log file when attempting to stream to a remote VLC
player. It goes like this:

Code:

  [19-07-13 12:02:31.9066] Slim::Player::Song::open (410) Error: Couldn't
create command line for flc playback for
[file:///mnt/MUSIC1.2/CDsAdded2019/CDsAddedJuly2019/David%20Crosby%20-%20Croz/11.%20Find%20A%20Heart%20-%20David%20Crosby%20-%20Croz.flac]

... again and again and again

The log/error messages from VLC are here: https://pastebin.com/GyyDwgZn

I tried this today on a Fedora 30 64-bit box running VLC 3.0.7.1
Vetinari trying to stream music from an Ubuntu media server 18.04
running Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.2 - 1556111457.

It doesn't matter if I upgrade the LMS; this problem has been ongoing
for more than a year.

I've asked the VLC people repeatedly and I mean REPEATEDLY if it's even
possible to stream more than one file type (mp3 vs flac vs ogg etc)
because, as far as I know, it's necessary to add the type of file you
want to stream to the request entered into the VLC network streaming
section.

So, something like, http://192.168.1.1:9000/stream.mp3

or

http://192.168.1.1:9000/stream.ogg

I asked if there is a *universal* command/string I could put here
(ending in say stream.* or something) but ...

I can't get them to answer this simple question.

Because, really, I don't know if what I want to do is possible. And, if
not, I'd really rather not waste everyone's time.

Thanks. Sorry for the mini-rant.

The problem is that I've not seen an update of the protocol that
explains how to use that, if available. I think I've seen some update of
the API on Android, but I'm using a much lower level interface,
basically a direct connection to the CC player.

One can always write another "media receiver" (the application that runs
inside the CC and is responsible for all communication with
controller(s) as well as getting the audio), but that a much bigger
effort. Ideally, if one want to engage in such venture, it's probably a
better ideal to write a native slimproto application :)

So basically, today, I'm using the "default receiver" and it's still
track after track, and I have to wait for track N to end before sending
N+1.

It’s related to Apple. iTunes is one of the apps that can use it but
there are lots of others on iOS. Forget it on Android.

If you had an iPhone you could AirPlay stuff from your phone to your
Receiver.

However what Phillipe means is that with his very clever Airbridge
plugin you can convert the AirPlay bit in your Receiver into a quasi SB
player and control it via whatever means you use for your real SB

This is a zero cost alternative. You just need to use Phillipe’s Plugin.
It’s pretty easy to set up.

Full Chromecast then
Phillipe's CastBridge plugin will turn it into an SB player with Now
Playing display on your TV if you want it.
Plex (instead of Twonky) will expose your music & playlists (and movies
if you have any) for the non techies and the Plex app is available for
both Android & iOS and works perfectly with a Chromecast out of the
box.
I'd still highly recommend getting LMS (& Plex) off Windows and on to
something else though.

Yes, it's a full AVR (Yamaha RXA1060 if you're into that sort of thing)

Sticking a player onto the Amp is the first step. Unless you are using
high res audio i.e. above 16/44 or your wifi near the amp is poor then a
£20 Chromecast Audio is the cheapest option but if its an AVR then a
full Chromecast at £30.

There are LMS control apps for Android and iOS - if you are lucky SWMBO
has a iPhone and using iPeng on that to control the player on the hifi
just works and she will get the hang of it in no time. Others will
advise on the best Android control app.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Error message

2017-10-11 Thread StevePalmer

This is a great read - thanks! Very helpful. It's all been a very steep
learning curve for me in recent months. I spent a fortune on the AMP,
only to find that none of my LMS playlists showed on the AMP. All other
metadata worked a treat via LMS. Given that we already had a gazillion
squeezebox radios already working perfectly, I really didn't want to
install ANOTHER server on the PC, but Twonky was the only one that
'picked up' my playlists.

The helpful chaps at Richer and on the Yammy Help Desk all confirmed
exactly your point about a lack of standards - and I suddenly realised
that a 'simple' system that fed all the radios AND the HiFi (including
showing all my playlists) was a bit of a pipe dream!

I've learned so much in the past few months! I still consider LMS to be
the system-of-choice, but it doesn't play nicely with the Amp so I've
had to compromise.

The Twonky Help Forum has been hopeless, so it's lucky I've only had one
query since I installed it. [emoji5]

Your point about using something like Google is probably the logical
step forward... But then there's the 'challenge' of re-educating the
family! It's taken me three months to get the wife confident in using
her Tablet with MusicCast!

I *realky* appreciate your words that have helped put my music world
into context.

Well chaps, we seem to have come full circle...

Mysteriously a little earlier the problem where LMS wasn't showing on my
various apps on my phone, sorted itself out and I could then access my
MP3s from my Win10 PC on my phone. Still not sure how it resolved
itself!

Bizarrely, as soon as I unchecked the plugin by Andy, LMS disappeared
from my phone app. As soon as I re-enabled the plugin, LMS re-appeared
on my phone. Obviously the two events are connected in some way.

So, in a round about sort of way, if LMS isn't showing on my phone, I
just disable Andy's plugin and then re-enable it and LMS re-appears. I
don't know enough technically about what's going on here, but
coincidence or not, it seem to have solved my original problem of
getting LMS to show on my phone.

I think we should all go and have a lie down now and close the ticket on
this one! :)

Thanks guys, I think I would have pulled out my last remaining hairs if
you hadn't pointed me in various directions!

Cheers

I think you should switch off uPNP in LMS - by the sounds of it you
don't need it - go to Plugins and remove the Andy Grusman plugin (this
is what exposes your players as uPNP devices in Windows etc)

Hi bpa

I know what you mean! I'm now at the stage where I'm wondering 'do I
just live with the glitch'? :) At least all the radios are working and I
can play all my music! I think I might be a bit OCD!

Anyway, I've followed your previous instructions to the letter and it's
created another log. Still no date stamp, but the log is a lot larger in
content. Does it show you anything that might affect LMS showing as an
icon in Win10?

THis is why I warned you abotu "is it worth the effort ?". I get the
easy job. I know from experience repeating tests with slight variation
can addle the brain - I've spent hours chasing "bugs" which were just
due to my finger trouble. So from my perspective I have to assume finger
trouble first rather than start exploring very unusual LMS behaviour.

If timestamp are not re-appearing after log.conf file deleted - then the
steps have not been done properly - sorry.

1. LMS was not stopped/restarted - some users think stopping control
panel stops LMS - it doesn't
2. The log.conf file deleted was not the one is use by the LMS running -
check the location of prefs directory thro' WebUI Setting/Information

I suggest
1. stop LMS. Make sure it is stopped by checking Web GUI is not
working.
2. Delete the logs.conf file. Check the directory the file has been
deleted in case of permissions etc.
3. Delete the server.log file
4. Empty Windows rubbish bin
5. start LMS.

>From WebGUI Setting/Information - check log to see iof timestamp ios
back. If no time stamp please copy log.conf to a post.

I checked the uPNP code - if DEBUG was enabled there would be a record
of a "SUBSCRIBE" or "UNSUBSCRIBE" request with the origin URL before
each of the "412" errors.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Error message

2017-10-11 Thread bpa

There is somehting wrong with your system (probably unrelated) - all log
message should be date & time stamped - yours are missing this. To fix
this
Stop Squeezebox Server, delete the log.conf file in your prefs
directory, then restart the server.

Also no DEBUG level message in the log - are you sure you have check box
ticked when you clicked Apply.

The log message won't tell the cause of the problem. Each subscribe
fail is failure to subscribe to an event generator of a upnp "device" -
if the device or devices can be identified it will hint at the root
cause. I suspect network.

No new messages so after looking uPNP code and it seems all logging is
done at DEBUG level. Please repeat with network.upnp at DEBUG.

If these mnessage have just started happening - what has changed on your
system ?
There seems to be roughly same number of upnp messages as ickstream
messages - is isckstream new ?

I have often wondered about the best way to start a new log file. Is
there a better way than manually deleting the current one?

WebUI Settings/Advanced/Logging

1. Scroll down to network.upnp and set to INFO
2. Check the box marked "Save logging settings for use at next
application restart"
3. Click Apply.

It is best to start a new log file as then you'll be able to post the
zip archive of whole log file (i.e. no need to cut & paste from a big
log file with loits of history) . The link to server.log ZIP archive
can be found at top of WebUI Setting/Advanced/Logging

If this problem comes and goes - Is it worth the effort to investigate
as the problem is likely to be a caching issue with something holding on
to a old data (probably Windows) or somehting not shutdown/restarted or
restarted too quickly etc. ?

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Error message

2017-10-11 Thread bpa

These sort of errors may be due to caching old data. UPNP is the
mechanism which will make LMS appear under Windows and other system
which recognise uPNP servers.

I'd enable network.upnp logging to get more info. If it is on startup
you'll also need to tick the "save logging ..."

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Error message

2017-10-10 Thread StevePalmer

Hi Folks

Been having a few issues (unusually!) with LMS not appearing as a server
on my Win10 network, although all my Radios around the house can play
radio stations as well as my MP3 collection. In fact, everything seems
to work, except I can't *see* LMS on any PC as a media device. Weird!
Occasionally, the icone will re-appear, but then after a reboot, it
disappears again. I can also ALWAYS see the tray icon in my system tray,
so I'm guessing that the problem isn't that serious! :)

In most other ways, LMS is perfectly well-behaved, but the
'non-appearance' as a server in Win10 means I'm not getting LMS as an
option to play my music on say, my android phone or tablet.

I checked the server log today and saw the following 'error'. Can anyone
tell me what it actually means, and whether it's likely to be related to
LMS appearing/disappearing as an icon in media devices.

Does the fact that it's showing more than once, mean anything other that
it's trying, and trying etc?

Thanks Guys! Your advice is appreciated, as always.
