Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Tidal hi-res through LMS 8.0 - bitrate limited to 44.1?
Hi - very new to LMS and iPeng. Ive searched and searched, but cant seem to find the definitive on this: those above using qobuz, are any of you using iPeng or another controller on iOS to play through a second iOS device? When using qobuz app on device I can stream bit perfect 24/192 into my Cambridge DAC via USB class 2.0. Over iPeng it down samples to 96kHz. Ive set all file types with native option to native and in LMS /iPeng set.rate to 24/>96 and no limit bit rate. I know iPeng used to max at 96 (maybe still does) and if this is the case, what should I do to enable transcode on server and is this a better option than accepting the Downsampling? Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Tidal hi-res through LMS 8.0 - bitrate limited to 44.1?
I'm telling TIDAL to send the best quality stream available to the user. That's a value which is returned by TIDAL, on which I can't have any influence. I've added some logging to see what values we're getting there. And up to this point I've only had "high" (lossy) and "lossless", but not "hi_res". Maybe no client with higher abilities has come across this server instance yet. -- Michael I am using iPeng and/or Squeezepad on my iPad to stream highres or MQA files via UPnP from Tidal to my Lyngdorf TDAI 3400. However, if I am using my Squeezebox Touch, TIDAL seems to be limited to 44.1/16. SqueezePlay on my Mac seems also limited to 44.1/16 although both players are capable of streaming hi-res files from my NAS. I have checked all plugins and settings on my LMS and could not find out where the problem is. So I came here and read Michals's response --- I guess Tidal's appetite to sort out that mess is limited since they what us to use their app. Qobuz however streams hi-res files (>44.1/16) without any problems, no matter what player I am using. I've also made the change from Tidal to Qobuz because of hi-rez on Tidal only being on MQA. Basically, since MQA isn't, and likely won't, be supported in almost all of our scenarios, it just seems Tidal's a non-starter for us and qobuz is a better option. Interested if anyone has any different views of course. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Tidal hi-res through LMS 8.0 - bitrate limited to 44.1?
Tidal HIFI used to deliver (at least they claimed) CD quality audio. In the past Tidal 'master' tracks where FLAC (lossless) compressed 24bit/96kHz files. Then MQA came into the picture, MQA is a proprietary format to (lossy) compress the additional samples into the LSB bits of the audio data. Although not many details ar known it boils down to the fact that e.g. that take 96Khz/17 bit audio, downsample this to 48kHz fs, then use the the lower 2 or 3 bits to store some (lossy) compressed data. This compressed data is used in the (MQA licensed) playback chain to 'recover' (which is in fact not possible) the original 96kHz fs. There is a lot of filtering an processing done with MQA, whther it sound better or worse is a matter of personal taste, but it is definately not tha master recording as the performer and the audio engineer intended it to be. Since MQA is proprietary, the process can only be done on licensed hardware and/or software. At this moment many of the Tidal tracks are being 'upgraded' to 'hi-res'. In fact, many of those 'hi-res' tracks are 44.1kHz 16 FLAC MQA encoded, which means the lower 3 bits contain noise if not processed by an MQA licenced DAC or decoder. This means you get worse than CD quality for a premium price when played back via an SB or one of the many existing receivers with Tiday support. For me the reason to cancel my Tidal subscription after many years. Besides the above, feaures like room correction, digital crossovers and digital volume control algorithims also will make things worse when applied to MQA encoded audio. MQA is nothing more than a lot of marketing fuzz to sell the same music again in another format. To introduce a new form of DRM and to make people buy new hardware. The fact that it's proprietary implies also the risk that you end up with something like Betamax or SACD for which you might not able to buy playback devices later. One of the many articles about MQA: https://benchmarkmedia.com/blogs/application_notes/163302855-is-mqa-doa Brings me aslo to a question, it seems Qobuz is still delivering true CD quality, which might replace my Tidal subscription. I love the Tidal integration in LMS 8, it's brought my Squeezeboxes bang up to date - great work :) Although... Hi-res albums don't seem to come through at "master" quality. I've tried 24/96 tracks from Tidal on a Touch and on a Pi with pCP, and my DAC shows them playing at 16/44.1. The same tracks on the Tidal desktop app (Windows) going into the same DAC via USB do play at 96KHz. Similarly my LMS setup serves local hi-res files correctly, and I can see them playing through the Squezeebox(es) at 96KHz. Is this a limitation of re-streaming via LMS? sixeyed's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71065 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113430 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
