Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Speaker for garden. Bluetooth?

2021-04-28 Thread Paul Webster

Libratone Zipp 2 arrived today - and is now up and running.
I deliberately went through the set-up without using their app or the
Apple special Airplay Setup stuff (detects the device and offers to set
it up from the iOS WiFi page).
So I did it all from regular Windows machine over WiFi and web browser.

Now playing via Airplay Bridge.

Tried via UPnP Bridge first and it played 5 seconds and stopped ... I'll
research that later (maybe).

It does indeed have Alexa built in.
I received notification of it being posted on Saturday so should have it
on Monday or Tuesday.

Doesn’t this thing also have Alexa built in? I wonder if it supports
Amazon’s AudioPlayer interface - in that case the Stream commands in
MediaServer would work with it.

Great stuff, thanks for testing and confirming this.

... that is just thining about it from LMS side of things.

Maybe you can use the AirPlay functions in iOS to set them as a stereo
pair ... I think I remember Philippe saying that even though stereo pair
is talked about as an Airplay 2 feature it actually worked with AirPlay
1 as well.

I think wait for the definitive on this from Philippe ... so maybe ask
in the AirPlay Bridge thread or link from there to here.

You can set up the 2 pseudo players in LMS to be left and right.
Settings/Player/Audio
I don’t think the Zipp is mono though I think it has clever array of
speakers to do some kind of stereo trickery. I may be wrong. Sounds
great to me either way.

You can experiment set the "Output Channel Mode" for the device ...
(Left/Right/Mono) ... and see if it filters as you would hope
LMS/Settings/Player/the airplay device/Audio

If it does then you should be able to set one as left and one as right
and then put them in a sync group ... might work.

Would mean that if you wanted to have just one playing by itself then
you would have to go back to the settings and make it Stereo (and have
the device combine) or Mono (and let LMS/bridge? combine).

Good experiment.

Thanks for the tips! I got it today. It is nicely made and the sound
quality is not bad, absolutely fine for the garden and more than loud
enough (to annoy the neighbours ;) ).

The AirPlay bridge is working nicely, thank you phillippe_44.

I did a little walkabout and my wi-fi range covers everywhere that I
might reasonably want it. It was interesting to hear how the speaker
sounds very different in different spaces (and in different positions in
those spaces). It is not so easy to experiment with speaker placement
with my main wired floorstanders!!

My only concern with the Zipp is (unless I am missing something) that is
is dependent on an app for initial network set-up, and so is thus
dependent on the continuing support of the app by its dev. I am
sensitive to this as I have an original Sphero and Sphero R2D2 in the
house, both in fine mechanical condition... but Sphero no longer support
them. Both would be dead if it were not for the APKMirror, where the
apps can still be found... but at some point even these will cease to
work with future versions of Android. I guess the Squeezebox Radio has
a real advantage here. I presume that SqueezeAmp has browser or
SSH/Telnet config?

That is a very good price!
The big brother version has excellent sound for its size. I'd expect
that to be pretty good too.
I use mine in Airplay mode with Philippe's bridge and I'd recommend that
mode as the best option if your WiFi reaches far enough into the
garden.

In perusing Ebay I found 'these Zipp Minis'
going for what seems to be a very good buy-it-now price. They seem to
have the same functionality as the full-size Zipp, but have less power
and a 3" instead of 4" driver. Reasonable reviews around though.

There are allot of radios on the US ebay and many offer overseas
shipping (not sure where you are located). All you have to do is swap
out the adaptor.

I check in on ebay here is the US frequently and there is always an
abundance of radios. Touches and Booms are more rare (and seemingly more

Of the two the Airplay with Philippe’s AirplayBridge will just work.
Will do gapless etc but is limited to 16/44.1. Which is an Airplay
limitation
The Bridge is Airplay 1

The Chromecast will do gapless in Flow mode but perhaps requires just a
little bit more setting up.

The dac32 is using the same (in essence at least) software as SqueezeAMP
but does not have a built in amplifier so you lose one potential

Many thanks everybody for all the ideas. I'm liking the idea of an SB
Radio best at this point as it's all ready to go, and I could see it
being used around the house a lot. I'd forgotten all about them, so
thanks for that. I will see what I can find.

A close second is the Airplay/Chromecast speaker option. It would mean
setting up another Pi with pCP but I've done a few so that is easy
enough.

I wasn't aware of Squeezeamp, it looks like a great option for a future
DIY build, thanks. Similarly, a Pi Zero running pCp with hat DAC could
work well with an active portable speaker. The physical/casing side of
things would require thought and work though - "friction to the
experience" is something that definitely must be avoided to keep it
family-proof.

I also found these, but I'm not sure they offer anything that a Pi Zero
W + hat DAC doesn't already do:

Sorry, I forgot to mention I use the Squeezeplayer app which registers
the phone with LMS as a player. LMS Material app used for control and
music beamed to the speaker (a Logitech Boom bluetooth speaker

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Speaker for garden. Bluetooth?

pCP has a really nice bluetooth support option, as Paul says.

The drawback, for me, is that you have to go back to the specific host
pCP prefs to re-connect your BT speaker if you turn it off or use it
elsewhere. That adds a bit of friction to the experience that I dislike
and that others in the household find wholly untenable. I'd also love
to learn that there's an easier way.

It would be neat if there were a way to reconnect BT devices from LMS
rather than the individual pCP prefs page, which would reduce that
friction.

As it is, I found that a true LMS player was a better UX overall because
it just appears in the LMS player list when powered on, unlink my BT
devices. In my case, a Squeezebox Radio, but soon I will play with a
SqueezeAMP.

pCP can drive a bluetooth speaker using the built-in Bluetooth ... but
it might work better with a Bluetooth dongle instead of the internal
one.
However, Bluetooth does not travel very far ... so how far away is your
garden listening point from your RPi ?

A battery powered AirPlay or Chromecast device might be better since
they run over WiFi which will travel further (and use the batteries
faster).

Another route is SqueezeAMP embedded inside a passive speaker and
powered by recharagable batteries.
