Re: [Sugar-devel] Music Blocks in the Playstore (Walter Bender)

2023-05-16 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi Devin,

I don't think that anyone has pushed MusicBlocks to F-Droid. Let me know if
I'm wrong.
Just checked on the app, the MB version is 3.xx even though the app is the
same as 2020.
Being on F-Droid would be cool, I agree.
I assume that it just shows a webview of the current website, even though I
might be wrong.

[Sugar-devel] A show of excitement and source of motivation for everyone here

2021-01-21 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Just came across this one-year-old comment of mine on a YouTube video
titled "The Coolest Netbook You’ve Forgotten About: The OLPC XO-1" when
someone commented on my comment about 2 hours ago. [Link to the video:

I thought that I'd share it all of you on the mailing list since it shows
that people are still excited to hear about the cool stuff that the people
here have built and the impact you're delivering each and every day. All of
you are awesome!

Hi, I'm from SugarLabs, the organisation that makes the software that OLPC
laptops (and a lot more devices) run on.

Happy to answer any questions. Please ask.

Do you know if the display is switching modes with the greyscale thing?
Very curious how the screen works

Have the laptops been upgraded over the years or have they stayed with the
same exact hardware as initially? Eg bigger storage, Ram, a touchscreen,
etc?

@generic Josh number 96 I have a better resource for you to read up on this
display:

It serves a good intro to the OLPC display.

@generic Josh number 96 Thanks for asking.

A kernel configuration file is used to select colour or grayscale
mode in the driver, and thus the display controller ASIC. This is in
the kernel sources.

The keyboard shim detects brightness control keys and manages the
backlight power. When the backlight is turned off, the grayscale mode
is enabled. When the backlight is turned on, the grayscale mode is
disabled. This is in the keyboard shim sources.

On the XO-1.75 and XO-4 models, a reverse biased red LED in the same
SMT package as the green storage LED is used as an ambient light
sensor. The power management daemon (powerd) detects high ambient
light and turns off the backlight and turns on the grayscale mode.
The backlight is turned off to save power, and increase running time
on battery. This is in the powerd sources.

However, without any change to backlight brightness or mode switching,
full sunlight does appear as greyscale, because the human eye can't
discern the small amount of colour emitted by the backlight compared
to the large amount of white light reflected from the sun.

@Alex The hardware has been regularly updated with release of newer models.

For example, XO-4 (the latest one) has a touchscreen variant and improved

Re: [Sugar-devel] Music Blocks in the Playstore (Walter Bender)

2020-07-22 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi Samson,

It works offline if you allow it to connect once after downloading the APK,
which seems good because you already have internet access while accessing
the play store. Yes, it's linked to the website but is accessible offline.

Try this:

Install
Load once
Turn off the internet
Close app
Restart the app
App should work now, please post if it doesn't.

Best,
Sumit

Re: [Sugar-devel] Weekly Progress Blogs of GSoC

2020-05-08 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Medium has been pushing for a paywall lately, which means it limits what
you can see if you're not a subscribed member.

Even though there are ways to get around the paywall, I still would highly
recommend not using Medium so that it can be available to the wider
community.

Yes, GitHub pages (GitHub.io) are a nice alternative, easy to host and
needs almost no maintenance.

Feel free to suggest any more alternatives.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020

2020-03-22 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi Ahmad,

Music Blocks is a fork of Turtle Blocks JS, which is a derivative of Turtle
Blocks, which is written in Python.
MB <-- TB JS <-- TB <-- Python
You can export Turtle Blocks code as Python code to directly run via python
interpreter leveraging libraries like GTK.

The aim is to provide similar functionality for Music Blocks. This means
the end result should be that you would be able to export Music Blocks as
JavaScript code that can be run without any external dependencies in the
browser.

PS: I've CC'ed sugar-devel mailing list here, feel free to join the mailing
list to stay in touch about the questions other people in the community are
asking about GSoC.

Re: [Sugar-devel] Proposal query

2020-03-17 Thread Sumit Srivastava
To reduce wasted effort, just make sure that the idea is really needed by
talking to the project mentor or one of the heads of the segment - {Lionel,
James, or Walter} if you're not sure who the mentor might be.

If the previous GSoC project was already done, it might not be needed again
so just talk to a mentor once to confirm if it's required.

Regarding credits: No need for credits, though you can mention the project
if you want.

Feel free to ignore all the above advice and send a proposal directly to
sugar-devel for review.

All the best,
Sumit

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC enquiry

2020-03-12 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi Sam,

For this idea the path is pretty simple. Select atleast 100 issues to
resolve over the course of the summer and tell us how you'd resolve them.

Maybe even try resolving a few beforehand so that we know that you are able
to actually resolve a few issues? Might increase chances of selection.

In short: Select atleast 100 issue in music blocks and chalk out a map to
resolve those issues. Also try contributing meaningfully to music blocks in
the meantime.

PS: Subscribe to sugar-devel mailing list if you haven't already done so.

Re: [Sugar-devel] Proposal to move communication to other platform

2020-03-04 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi,

It was me, back in 2018, started the conversation of switching to Gitter. [
http://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2018-February/055061.html]

Back then, I was as new to the community as Bottersnike, Prashant, and
Srevin are now.

I had just come from SymPy organisation that used Gitter as their primary
communication channel.

A huge round of appreciation to James for being on Gitter answering all the
incoming questions.

About three years down the line, here's what I learnt:

1. Installed two IRC clients for mobile access: Riot.im and IRCCloud

2. IRC is still a pain to use, and I still prefer (enjoy) answering
questions over the mailing list.

3. It's hard to switch a community to a communication tool 2, unless you
totally ban the original communication tool 1 and end supporting the
original communication tool. Infact, it becomes worse when you have limited
resources and people (something I wasn't aware of when I joined the
community) because the James now has to spend his headspace for answering
questions on IRC, Gitter, mailing list, and has to spend time maintaining
the codebase. Headspace is valuable and limited.

Now that I've made you aware of the actual constraints of the problem, I
think you may want to spend more of your time this GSoC on Gitter answering
questions of the newcomers. :)

I would love to hear new viewpoints from other community members.

PS: Thanks to everyone who answers questions from people new to SugarLabs.

You are welcome to ask doubts over sugar devel.

Yes, even the small ones. Even the "how to get started with sugar labs type

James can point out to say what was the policy that asked people to
communicate publicly instead of privately but it's because it benefits the
community instead of a single person.

Hi, Omkar.

GCI is about everything that an open source organisation might need: from
frontend to backend, from design to documentation, etc. You can choose any
of the above pertaining to you your interest.

PS: No need to address anyone as Sir over here. Addressing one by first
name (Sumit in my case) is acceptable and appreciated.

PPS: Please direct your questions to sugar-devel for quicker response time,
I've Cc'ed sugar devel for now, so don't worry about it.

While it's common for people to code on laptops, it's not necessary. There
are also other type of tasks, so it's not just limited to coding. So, yes,
you can.

I don't think should be anything in Google Code In terms that says that

You can also use someone else's laptop or computer meanwhile if you want.

All you need to participate is the wish to participate.

2019-04-13 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi, Vipul, Jaskirat, and all members of SL community!

These days I'm thinking about two things:

1. How to expand the SL developer community?

2. How do we move towards the vision for sugar labs that was discussed a
few weeks ago in an email thread?

As of now, I've some ideas for *1*, but need more inputs from everyone.
Shall I start a new thread for new inputs?

And yes, I'm constantly thinking about how can we make great things happen
in the community. Glad that you noticed.

[Sugar-devel] What's the long term vision of Sugar Labs?

Who do we aim to be?

I understand that these are a lot of questions. You can also share relevant
mail archive links if they're available.

I also understand that we're a non profit and the organisations I mentioned
might not be a close match.

Essense of my question: If we could achieve anything, what would we want?

2019-03-23 Thread Sumit Srivastava
I think that your best bet is to send mails to sugar-devel and not
personally.

Always try to cc sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org even when you send emails
personally.

While I do think that you might want to choose another project if you need
a lot of handholding from mentors in this project, you can also use your
wisdom to tackle issues and improve the dashboard yourself.

Go ahead, design good stuff and start implementing. Just keep in mind who
are we making it for (students/kids), why are we making it (to enable
learning). This high level understanding of how things work here will help
you make useful decisions yourself.

In addition to what James said:

If you're confused where to post it, just shoot a mail to

Also, make sure you don't include a lot of personal information and no

As far as bonding with the mentors goes, we'd be happy to bond with you

[Sugar-devel] Reminder: Inviting suggestions to good first issues on musicblocks repository

2019-03-14 Thread Sumit Srivastava
I've been trying to label good first issues, for our super new members in
musicblocks repository.

Even though I've been doing my best, I can't be fully aware of all the 249
issues on musicblocks.

If you're aware of any issues that might help as labels for good beginner
issues, please reply to this thread with the name/link/number/id of the
issue. Anything works!

Please also mention why would it be a good beginner issue in a line or two.
Those involved with musicblocks are expected to reply. :)

2019-03-12 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Navya,

Good to see you figuring out the codebase! Check out instructions on
downloading and running musicblocks. It should be present in the
musicblocks documentation. It states:

"*If you want to run Music Blocks offline, download this repo and point
your browser to the index.html file found in the musicblocks directory on
your local file system."*

Also, if you post your questions directly to sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org
, more people can come in and contribute. I am sorry if you had a rough
start but rest assured, the community is awesome!

I'll be available at sugar-devel mailing list and so would be a lot other
experienced developers in the community. Always better to expose your
questions to more people, right? For this thread, you can use "reply-all"
button on gmail to directly post to sugarlabs devel list and me.

Keep asking questions! :)

Regards

2019-03-11 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi, navyasri!

It'd be great if you post publicly to the sugar devel mailing list. While I
have no problem with replying to your question privately, the community as
a whole benefits more from public discussions like these.

Don't worry you can post all kinds of beginner questions, even the one you
think might be silly, to the mailing list. :)

Here are the steps to approach the issue:

-Fork the branch.

-Take a look at the instructions to add sample sound.

-Try and do it yourself.

-Did you find instructions were useful? Do they need to be updated? (Hint:
Yes, because of which the issue was created)

-Figure out how can you better explain the process you followed to add a
sample sound.

-Write it down.

-Commit to your branch, test, and then request to merge.

I apologise on the behalf of OLPC and Sugar Labs community.

To Michael Gill:
We hope to be inclusive to all and if something that you felt was over the
top or non inclusive, please express yourself freely. And yes, Mozilla

any other community in the world.

To navyasri:
We're extremely happy to have you here! You can try browsing the
repositories, and can start by fixing some minor issues.

If you're unsure of where to start, you can start by looking at:

Re: [Sugar-devel] Suggestion on moving from IRC to Gitter

2019-01-20 Thread Sumit Srivastava
+1 for Gitter over IRC given the recent spam tackling measures taken by
freenode.

Other advantages have already been mentioned, I raised this concern over
mailing list too.

It's high time we consider a switch.

Re: [Sugar-devel] Suggestion on moving from IRC to Gitter

2019-01-20 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Here's a relevant discussion regarding adoption Gitter I started about 11
months ago:

https://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2018-February/055061.html

Here are other relevant discussions:

http://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2017-September/054825.html

and here:

I'd still prefer Gitter, having used most alternatives to IRC, and the IRC
itself.
