 java.io.IOException: Too many open files

When I got this (on Sun 1.4.1_02) I looked with lsof and found 1024 open
 file descriptors.

 On redhat 9 I put fs.file-max = 65536 in /etc/syscntrl.conf...

I found users still have ulimit -u showing max files 1024, and that
 they can't increase it.

After googling a bit, I discovered two approaches (I fixed both)

 1) Change /etc/profile to add ulimit -Hn 65536

 2) Create /etc/initscript as described in man initscript, including
ulimit -Hn 65536

Using this approach, I also had to add ulimit -n 65536 to
start-freenet.sh, since I don't want to give every process
a huge default file descriptor limit.

[freenet-support] Connecting to Freenet ?

2004-06-03 Thread Michael R. Stork
Hi there
I'm trying to set up a Freenet node, and I'm not having any luck at all.
I've followed all the instructions for opening up ports on my router,
and I've reseeded several times now.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP1 with all the latest updates, the latest build
(5084) of Freenet, and my router is a D-Link DI-604. Within the router
I've opened the following ports; 64028 (the listen port listed in the
freenet INI file), 8481, . I opened the last two just to be on the
safe side, since it wasn't working anyway. I'm connected to the net, and
I'm able to get other P2P software to work; Limewire, Kazaa, Shareazaa,
so I'm not sure why your software won't get through.

Anyway, hope that you can help

Does freenet start? Check for freenet.log in the install directory and
send a few pages output from it to the list.

8481 and are meant for your usage ( is the web interface and
8481 is the fcp interface that freenet client programs use), don't
allow unknown hosts contact those ports.

 Hi Roger

Yes, it starts. Here's some of the info from the log file.

log snipped

Nothing special in the log. It looks like you changed some settings in
freenet that can't be changed on the fly (i.e. they need a node
restart). There are connections made and transfers done; I guess the
only thing that helps here is time. Let the node run a day or so, and
mail the list again if it still can't retrieve pages.
You could try to use Frost and check if you see messages there. Frost is
good at stressing the routing :):

Mike S.

What is the problem you are experiencing? An error message (if
so, which)? Are you uncapable of downloading anything from Freenet?
What? Details, please.

If it is the latter, I would run Frost
(jtcfrost.sourceforge.net) to see if you receive messages. If that is
the case, your node is alive and it will just need time to get
integrated into the network.

In any case, redirecting ports and 8481 in your router is
a *bad* idea (those ports shouldn't be accesible from the outside).
Only the main listening port should be redirected (64028 in your
case). By the way, that 64028 port is a randomly chosen one, so you
shouldn't disclose it, say, in Frost, if you don't want to compromise
your anonymity.

Kind regards.

You know what, I think it was the time issue. I've been trying to get
onto Freedon engine, and getting the error message Couldn't connect to
the network. Are you sure you have configured Freenet correctly? Also
make sure that you are connected to the internet. Couldn't get Key
one about the network possibly being busy and to reseed my nodes. But I
was just able to get onto Freedom Engine, so it's likely that the
problems solved. It's odd that it couldn't load the thumbnails on the
main internet screen, or even get to the readme file though.

Oh well, I'll give it time and see what happens.
