Re: [freenet-support] Windows and JRE 1.5

2004-10-23 Thread evolution
This would make a good entry in the FAQ.

-todd

Quoting Dave Hooper [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

webinstall.exe only accepts 1.4.x JRE. Maybe that should be changed but,
until it is, you won't be able to install freenet that way.
Of course, you could just hack your registry and it will just work:

After installing JRE 1.5 (or whatever JRE you want to use) create this key:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.4

 and copy everything from
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.5.1_5 (or
 whatever it's called)
 into ...\1.4 also.

That will trick the installer into thinking the JRE is a 1.4 JRE.

Alternatively somebody could fix the installer. I don't think there are any
significant reasons why you can't just install a 1.4 JRE in the first
 place...

   Hi!

Just tried to install Freenet 5090
 (http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-webinstall.exe) on Windows XP...
with the latest JRE 1.5.0 installed. Unfortunately, the freenet installer
then complains that it can't find a suitable JRE to run with.

Of course, I don't want to also install the 1.4.1 JRE... I want to stay
 with 1.5.0 or better.

   Regards,
   Gilles.

No, it should be fixed. 1.5 has several advantages over 1.4 e.g. 64-bit

You know that you can do a whois on IPs too? So if you have
static IPs
eighter you or your hoster is registered as owner of those IPs.
In both
cases it's no big deal to find out who you are.
See http://sunny.nic.com/cgi-bin/whois and enter your IP

I'm aware of that. Exactly that is my problem. The DNS-lookup *and*
DNS-reverse-lookup, which the uncountable whois-services can do.
On personal registered domains it could reveal your personal data, but
not all registered ip addresses have a reverse mapping to the
fqdn/domain!
Do you really think it makes no difference, if you only get the
providers data or directly the full personal data?
To reveal the real user (name and street address) of a static and
unnamed ip, there is a barrier to take: You have to make an official
request to the provider!
Until that, there is no name and street address ... and no spam ;-)

I'm just talking about a very basic level of privacy, of course. I don't
think at law enfocement level, coz they are able at any time..

 Hi,

I think you will find that one IP address is almost as traceable
as any
 other IP address...

I know, that's right! There is no way to hide the use of freenet nodes.
But u cannot get personal data on every ip address as easily, like on
registered domain addresses
Currently the node uses *all* IP-adresses for outgoing
connections! The
problem is not solvable using the firewall, because the
different ports
it uses on every connection - and it would not be the nicest way
anyway.

One firewall-based solution would be the user match support in
linux's
firewalling tools... if you are running the firewall on a separate
machine you'd have to label the packets on the one running the node,
after recognizing them from the user match module...

I'll take a look at it. But i don't like the firewall solution, because
of negative effects on the node. The node would keep trying to build up
unwanted connections, until drop/reject. There would be a high error
count of no real errors and it would consume a hight amount of useless
working threads thought
So my node identity is easily revealed by a reverse lookup of my
main ip
address on some connections. Like this i cannot use freenet without
presenting my street address to everyone! I cannot deal with that.

You just admitted to running freenet on a public mailing list! :)

In my opinion it makes a difference, if i present just a
number/account-id/nick/any-provider-data, or my real name and street
address via the easy use of the arin database
 Thanks for any suggestions!!!
