Re: Password

2013-08-04 Thread ChO
1. Go to your old computer
2. Locate your .purple directory.
If you can't find it, read this:
   https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%
20Pidgin#Whereismy.purpledirectory
3. Open the file accounts.xml with an editor, such as kwrite, notepad or
gedit.
4. Somewhere in that file, you should be able to find your password,
surrounded by password and /password tags. Just search for
password to find it. You may find several passwords if you used to use
several accounts.
5. Write down the password and enter it on your new computer.

Lisa,

This email address is actually a mailing list for the Pidgin software.

Cusd20 maintains its own passwords and is not affiliated with the Pidgin
software. Please contact someone responsible for managing passwords for
cusd20. If unsure, contact your companies IT specialist. If you have
non-password related questions (such as general pidgin help), then
please ask those questions here, however password requests will need to
go through your normal IT processes.

I can't believe that Pidgin is wrong about this. I rather think that
another client might in fact be signing in to your account. This might
be a spammer who has obtained your login credentials using a virus on
your computer or through phishing. Please make sure that your machine is
clean and that noone but you knows your password. (You wrote that you
tried to reset your password. Did you actually change it?)

I'm unable to sign in to MSN on Pidgin. I just get a message at the
bottom 1 account was disabled because you signed on from another

- Version 2.6.6

- I've tried resetting my password to something different.
- I can sign in from the Windows Live site, so it isn't a
username/password problem.

Re: Question

2011-03-30 Thread ChO
Hi,

I got some ideas how you could make this happen. There are several
options:

a) set your nick to the word that you want to cause the sound. This is
ugly but it's simple. If you want to keep your nick, you can make two
simultaneous connections to the same server.
b) use a plugin. I don't know of a plugin that is able to do this, but
such a plugin might already exist or someone might want to write it.
c) use a bot that either says your name when someone says ALL or sends
you a private message
d) tell everyone in the channel to post the output of /names to the
channel when saying something that is relevant for everybody.

Hi,

I have a question about Pidgin usage.

Is it possible to associate a sound to specific words someone might say
in chat?

Let's say I'm in a chat with 20 people and we decided that every time
someone has to say something to everyone starts his sentence with the
word ALL: hi can..., is it possible to associate to the word All a
specific sound so that i don't miss that message? if no sound can be
used , then is it possible to make pidgin highlight that sentence (or
any other sentence) that has the word ALL in it? (or any other word i
want to set up to be highlighted)

Hope I was able to explain in a fine way what I need :)

I thank you in advance to your help and support.

Regards,

Raffaello

manage to find wrong ways of filling in that dialog.)

You need to put napakorn.athakasehm in the username field.
In the domain field, you put gmail.com. The rest can stay as it is.

If you still can't connect, there might be a firewall involved.

If you're sure it's neither a firewall issue nor caused by wrong input,

Re: [Fwd: Re: Cannot connect to GoogleTalk]

2011-03-30 Thread ChO
Unfortunately, Pidgin is not really specific about what is causing this
issue. I have already looked at the source code and I found several
possible reasons that can lead to this error message.

Please get a debug log and post it here. (You can create a debug log by
opening the debug window (in the Help menu) and copying what appears in
that window while you try to connect to Google Talk.) Make sure to
remove any information from the log that you don't want to make public.
You should also disconnect any other account before you start logging to
prevent pollution of your log with unnecessary information.

Re: problem invisible

2009-05-31 Thread ChO
It is true that Pidgin doesn't support invisibility on all protocols.

However, MSN invisibility is working for me.

Invisibility on XMPP/Jabber (this is the protocol that Google Talk makes
use of) is a bit more complicated. Invisibility on XMPP/Jabber is not
part of the core protocol itself, but requires an extension protocol,
and unfortunately, there are several different invisibility extensions
to XMPP. In order to get invisibility to work, there needs to be one
invisible extension that is supported by both the client and the server.
Most clients and servers do only support one or a few of these
extensions. Some don't support it at all. The Google Talk server for
instance, only understands an invisibility extension of its own which is
not supported by Pidgin.

I am just start to using pidgin. I am really happy to say it is very

but I have realized some missing
just a few from it
- sending screen-shots to others (it will be very useful)
- transfer files to me (e.g.: from sametime)
- contact search in the main window or in the chat window to make it
easier (chat window will be better)

For now it is enough.

I am just write you my ideas. I know that you have a lot of work and
maybe you are trying to interlock these things into pidgin already.

I try to find plugins for my problems without success.

I am using the ubuntu version.

Many thanks for this application.

Re: setup proxy

2009-05-27 Thread ChO
You can configure one application to use a proxy and configure another
to connect directly at the same time. In Pidgin, you can configure
proxies per-account (but not per-application).

This means that you won't need to configure Pidgin in any special way if
you want to use BitTorrent via Proxy.

1) Old logfiles will only be an issue if you were using such old
versions of Gaim (this is what Pidgin was called in former times) *both*
at home and at work. If you were using such an old version only in one

I've got a question about Pidgin I can't seem to find an answer for. I

home (which I have) my IM logs from my work copy, and merge them with
the home copy so that they will be in one set of logs. I don't know how
to accomplish this (I'm on Vista). Tkx.

I have the logs from both home and work. What I'm looking for is not
where they are, but how to take two sets of logs and merge them together
so that it will be a single set of logs with all the data from both sets
 in there.

I don't want to just copy the one from work on top of the version from
home, as that will just overwrite the home version. That's not what I
want to accomplish - I want to MERGE the two sets, not overwrite.

For practical purposes, you can probably do just that. The modern log
system uses a separate file for each conversation. Unless you started
two conversations on the same account with the same person at exactly
the same time there should not be filename conflicts, and so syncing
missing log files from one machine to another so that both contain the
union of all log files would effectively accomplish your goal.

However, there are some caveats. Primarily:

1) If you have any logs predating the log system rewrite (which was
prior to 1.0.0, I think), these were single-file logs and might be
inconsistent between your home directories and would have to be merged
by hand (though since they are no longer used for new logging, this
would only need to be done once (or ignored).

2) If you use an AIM or XMPP connection on two different machines at the
same time, it's possible the conversation would open at the exact same
second on both machines and cause a filename collision between both a
conversation and the one side of the conversation on the idle machine.
Logically, you could favor the larger or most recently modified file in
the case of a conflict and probably be safe.

A tool like rsync could help you merge the sets of files, with options
to only replace newer files or missing files on the destination and not
to delete files missing from the source. Rsync isn't widely available
on Windows, but there's a binary distributed with cygwin. You might be
able to get away with using Windows' own xcopy tool for the limited
scope you're working with.

Re: Cant change local alias

2009-05-27 Thread ChO
I'm afraid that you might have misunderstood something (although I might
be on the wrong track with this assumption):

- The local alias is only local, that's why it's called a _local_ alias.
It is *only* shown to *You*, not to other users. Your buddies will see
your friendly name (or an alias that they gave to you) instead.

- You need to click the Save button when you close the edit account
window if you want to save your changes, not Cancel.

- The local alias is account-specific.

If you're sure that you understand how local aliases work, please double
check twice that it's really broken.

Pidgin will only display my email address for my MSN account as my
alias. I've tried to change the local alias in Manage Accounts many
times but it wont work. I then tried upgrading from 2.5.5 to 2.5.6 as I
noticed a newer version was out. But that didnt help either.

Im hoping someone have a suggestions to what I can do to make this work
again? :-)

Best regards
Sune

Re: Google Talk to MSN

2009-05-27 Thread ChO
MSN doesn't support this natively which is Microsoft's fault.

Of course, you can use a gateway service, but you'll need to use another
client to set it up since Pidgin only supports _using_ Jabber/XMPP
transports but not transport _registration_. In addition to that,
transports have some drawbacks (security: the gateway can read your
(MSN) password and your conversations, reliablity: MSN + the gateway +
your Jabber/XMPP service need to work, feature set: gateways will
usually only support a subset of the protocol's feature set, usability:
You need a MSN account) which are why I neither use Jabber/XMPP
transports nor recommend doing this.

I recommend that you use Pidgin's own MSN implementation rather than
using a gateway.

If you have a Yahoo account, you can talk to MSN users from Yahoo, but
this bridge is still having some issues when used with _Pidgin_
(messages get lost in certain circumstances and you can't add buddies
through the bridge).

Is there a way in Pidgin to allow a google talk account to talk to MSN

Or do I need to use a Jabber/MSN gateway of some kind?

When someone sends you a file, Pidgin will suggest you to save it in the

RE: transfering music files

2009-05-15 Thread ChO
If you're using AIM, the other user will be using AIM or ICQ.

Some IM services limit the number of simultaneous file transfers per
user. As your contact has received _some_ of your files, I suspect that
you are having issues because you were sending too many files at the
same time, but I'm not sure whether this is the reason. Just try to
resend all files that didn't arrive and look whether it works.

You don't need to use a different protocol, but XMPP (also known as
Jabber) is the best I know. However, Pidgin's implementation of
XMPP/Jabber file transfers isn't complete (yet) which is why I still use
to use other protocols for file transfer.

With kind regards

Also, I was able to send him pictures too.

Would I have to use a different protocol (not AIM) to send files? If so, can

2- People on Communicator 2.0 don't see me as online when I am. It
usually says I'm off-line.

3- I don't always see the right status for someone that is on
Communicator whose status is not on-line. Sometimes it shows Busy
instead of Away, etc.

Thanks for your help!!!

You can either run a Jabber/XMPP server (e. g. ejabberd) on a machine in
your LAN or use the serverless Bonjour protocol.

Using Bonjour might be useful if you have some Macintosh computers in

If your network is rather huge, I'd recommend running a Jabber/XMPP

Openfire server directly. When we use spark or psi client,we can register
it to Openfire.(of course,we setup the msn gateway on openfire and
enable the function to the clients).
The pidgin provides the function by which we can connect to the msn
server directly, but this is not our point. So would you like to introduce
me how to do that?
   Thanks very much!

Re: webcam support (was: HELP)

2009-04-12 Thread ChO
Please read the FAQ before posting to the mailing list:
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/FAQ

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%
20Pidgin#VoiceandVideoMicrophoneandWebcamSupportNotImplementedYet

And use subjects that summarize your concern, especially when posting to
a list. webcam support would have been a good subject for your mail,
but HELP is what the whole support mailing list is about.

Hello,
I am emailing to you because I'm wandering if you can veiw or
send webcams on Pidgin. If we can't yet, then do you think there could
be a way to install it? I would download MSN, but I don't have Windows
on my Eee pc.
Please reply A.S.A.P!
 Yours sincerely, Hollie Gough

Re: pidgin suggestion

2009-04-10 Thread ChO
If you need a client that glorifies the differences between protocols,
try Miranda. In Miranda, even the scrollbars look different.

Total Nerd Alert spake unto us the following wisdom:
sorry i coudlnt find anywhere on the site to post suggestions.

one thing that annoys me with pidgin is the fact that at times buddy groups
from other protocols end up being merged with other protocols. my suggestion
is that you keep each protocol and their groups seperated by tabs

 | aim - username / msn - username / yahoo - username |

clicking on each tab would load the buddy list and the buddy groups for that
protocol account. i doubt this is an original idea and that its been
suggested before, but just incase it hasnt been... here you go.

Perhaps the primary design goal of Pidgin is to hide the differences
between accounts. If you want to glorify the differences between
accounts, you probably want a different IM client.

Re: Pidgin hidden on start up due to configuration

2009-03-28 Thread ChO
Pidgin should never hide itself from the user completely.
Did you disable the tray icon or are you unaware that it exists?

Hello there. I have recently played around with the pidgin settings and
have set pidgin to Always hide.

So now my pidgin is hidden whenever i start it, without anyway of
bringing it forward. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Pidgin and Skype protocol

2009-03-07 Thread ChO
Skype is probably not going to release their protocol. Both the protocol
and the official client are heavily encrypted and obfuscated because
Skype wants to discourage reverse-engineering.

I am afraid that Skype will not open their protocol before AIM, ICQ, MSN
and Yahoo have switched to XMPP.

I am quite certain that in the moment Skype will release
specification of their protocol, somebody will make a plugin for
pidgin ;-).
