Thank you all for your help.
It is NOT a firewall but a profile issue.
This means that this weekend will be spent for recreating a new profile
(I have many mail and news accounts and personalized extensions!)

And weather report tells it will be a beautiful weekend!
Sigh!

Before moving everything, I'd fire up the test profile, then in
about:config check for 'security' and compare the settngs (taking
screenshots is probably the easiest). Could be that you inadvertently
changed a setting from default changing it back may resolve the issue.

You are right: there are about 10 additional security in my new
profile. But it is not easy to understand what each line means, even
looking at the Mozilla KB (not all are described here).
Further the impossibility to print or copy the about:config doesn't
simplify the problem.
Therefore I started replacing the chrome directory with the backup of
a week ago, and it worked!

I will never know why the problem happened, but at least it has been solved!
Thank you all for your suggestions.

Old Netscape could stop animations in web pages with a click on the Stop
Animation in Web Pages line.

Does SM have anything like that?

Thanks for the replies. The once setting fits my needs.

Well, when you overwrite all the executables with a reinstall,
all that is left is the profile(s)--which are in another location.

(Do I then lose all my bookmarks etc.?)

I did ASSuME you've got all the bits of your profile(s)
backed up to external media.
...and bookmarks.html is the easiest to restore of any of it.
You don't want to delete your active Profile, you want to create a
new profile that is totally unique from the current one. In Windows
go to Start/All Programs/SeaMonkey and in the drop down menu you
should see an option named Profile Manager. Click on Profile
Manager and create a brand new profile with a unique name. Select
the option to always use the new Profile to open SeaMonkey.

Try it out with the new profile and if all goes well you can copy
your old Bookmarks file from the old profile into the new profile.
As a safety net before copying the old files into the new profile
rename the new file by adding NEW into the filename. In the event
you copy a corrupted file and it again trashes SeaMonkey you can
remove the bad file and use the known good file by renaming back to
its original name.

Stranger and stranger...
I get the drop-down menu with the Profile Manager option, but
clicking on it does exactly nothing.

Sorry, but it's true!

Hello Charley,

This is beginning to look like you have a corrupted installation of
SeaMonkey.

Use Windows Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and remove SeaMonkey and
any other related SeaMonkey installations.

During the uninstall process you should see 2 dialog boxes, in both
boxes select to remove all of SeaMonkey, this will remove all the
files and folders in the Program Files section for SeaMonkey, but will
leave your Profiles untouched.

Download a fresh copy of SeaMonkey from http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

With Windows Explorer navigate to your Program Files folder and
confirm that all files have been removed. If any are remaining delete
them.

Install the fresh copy of SeaMonkey and allow it to use all the
default settings, if you see a selection to install for all users, or
a single user, select Single User.

Once installed you should have access to Profile Manager just after
the splash screen leaves, or from Program Files/SeaMonkey/Profile
Manager, or from the top menu of SeaMonkey select Tools/Switch
Profile/Manage Profiles. You want to create a new unique profile for
testing.

Michael

Thanks, Michael.. I did just that. Nothing has changed at all. SM is
very cooperative unless terminated.

I suppose I can live with that; it's only a minute or so every day.

Charley

And now I can't even set it as my default e-mail application. Oh well,
I suppose SM 2.0 will change all this.

Most likely not. It is possible that while uninstalling SeaMonkey
something changed the default browser back to Explorer, look in Control
Panel/Internet Options/Programs and see if SeaMonkey is selected. If
not make the change there.
