seamonkey-2.x.. shortcomings (linux)

2010-02-28 Thread 01micko
Hi all

I am far from an experienced linux user, however I can find my way
around a linux system.

I use Puppy Linux which uses Seamonkey as the default browser.

Now, in Seamonkey-1.x series I (and all other Puppy users) could drag
a link or an image from the browser to a directory and wget would
automatically start and download the file. Nice feature.

In all seamonkey-2.x series so far this option seems not possible. I
have tried static builds, official mozilla builds and have compiled
seamonkey myself (several times) and still can not get this
functionality. Is there a ./configure option to enable this? If there
is I would have thought it would be the default.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers

Where? I can't find it. And I have an older browser than yours.

On the opening page:
Your browser will be unsupported soon.
Please upgrade to a modern browser..

Next are links to IE8, FF36, etc.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.22)
Gecko/20090605 NOT Firefox/3.5 SeaMonkey/1.1.17 Firefox/2.0.0.24

Try removing Firefox/2.0.0.254 from your user agent, e.g. setting it
back to the default could help...
That said, if they are dropping support for capabilities Firefox 2 had,
then SeaMonkey 1.1.x will stop working as well. SeaMonkey 2 should work
fine unless they do bad browser sniffing.

Nail Newsgroup Account Settings and Leave Messages on Server Settings

2010-02-28 Thread Frog

Background:
I decided to install SeaMonkey 2.0.3 on my system yesterday. I also
intend to keep SeaMonkey 1.1.18 installed on my system. I allowed the
2.0.3 software to be installed in the default locations--I made
absolutely no changes to this process. My operating system is Windows
XP SP3.

Subsequent Actions Since Installation:
I established shortcuts on my Desktop for SeaMonkey 1.1.18 (one for mail
and one for browser) and SeaMonkey 2.0.3 (one for mail and one for
browser). Both shortcuts are working properly.

Problem 1:
I am having a problem with the entries listed under Go when I am
looking at the 2.0.3 mail window. Here is the problem:

When I click Go at the top of the screen (the line just under the blue
banner)I see the following:

Next
Previous
___
Mail Start Page
___
f...@pond.com
Local Folders
Microsoft Help
Mozilla Help
etc.

All of the letters for Next and Previous are in black letters and the
remainder of the entries are in gray letters. I need to know how to
make the gray letters black so that I can click on them--so that they
will take me to the items clicked. Any suggestions?

Problem 2:
I want to continue to use 1.1.18 as my default internet capability for
now while I learn more about 2.0.3. Thus, I would like to know where
the setting is on 2.0.3 that will cause messages downloaded to this
version to remain on the server. I want downloads of messages to 1.1.18
to be remove from the server. Can anybody help me find the settings
that will make this happen?

Thanks for any help or suggestions sent my way on either problem.

Yes, it only works in browsers that support OpenSearch, e.g. Firefox.
There's a bug (410613) to port that functionality to SeaMonkey.

AFAICS the reason that AMO says you can install it in SeaMonkey is that
the add-on author didn't specify with which applications the add-on is
compatible so AMO probably shows it for all applications.

folders are normally skipped in that process. It would seem that they
would not need to be maintained at the same level as the main folders.

AFAIK SeaMonkey does not periodically re-index mail folders (like TB3's
gloda). It does periodically compact mail folders, though, if you
configured it like that (by providing a space saving threshold). AFAIK
Archives folders are not treated differently there. But unless you
delete messages from folders they won't ever need to be compacted so if
you always only add messages to Archives folders they won't be affected.
On the other hand, since the Archive feature moves messages, the source
folders are quite likely to need compaction at some point in time.

of the shortcuts on your desktop?

Well, you didn't do that for the Start menu. What you have in the

was done.

Also, keep in mind that when you look at the SM 1.1.X profile manager,
you're looking at the SM 1.1.X profiles only - not the SM 2.X profiles.
Similarly, when you're running the SM 2.X profile manager, you're looking

The other rule about running only one version of SM at a time apply here
as well. If you have SM 1.1.X open, and you attempt to launch the SM 2.X
profile manager, you're going to get the SM 1.1.X profile manager.

Finally, your SM 1.1.X profile settings were not moved to the newly-
created SM 2.X profile - They were migrated. The SM 1.1.X profile
will still exist, untouched by the migration. The SM 2.X profile will
exist completely separate from the SM 1.1.X profile.

Yes, accomplished with much help and guidance from you.

So what I see when I click startAll ProgramsSeaMonkey belongs to
2.0.3. Should I find a way to also include a Start menu entry for

Also, keep in mind that when you look at the SM 1.1.X profile manager,
you're looking at the SM 1.1.X profiles only - not the SM 2.X profiles.

How do I look at the 1.1.18 Profile Manager? This entry no longer
exists in my Start menu.

Similarly, when you're running the SM 2.X profile manager, you're looking
at the SM 2.X profiles only.

I am of the belief that the Profile Manager entry I am looking at
(default) is the one for 2.0.3. Is that correct? I do not have any
SeaMonkey items open, when I visit the Start menu Profile Manager.

The other rule about running only one version of SM at a time apply here
as well. If you have SM 1.1.X open, and you attempt to launch the SM 2.X
profile manager, you're going to get the SM 1.1.X profile manager.

I understand--I think. Here is the way I am looking at this 1.1.18 and
2.0.3 situation. I can have only one version open at a time. I can
have the browser and mail page open simultaneously for only one version
of SeaMonkey at a time. I have to have SeaMonkey turned off (both
versions) in order to see the Start menuAll ProgramsSeaMonkeyProfile
Manager. Have I got that right?

Finally, your SM 1.1.X profile settings were not moved to the newly-
created SM 2.X profile - They were migrated. The SM 1.1.X profile
will still exist, untouched by the migration. The SM 2.X profile will
exist completely separate from the SM 1.1.X profile.

This is where I get a little fuzzy with my thinking. I do hear what you
are telling me--my problem likely has to do with my limited technical
knowhow. I do understand that my 1.1.18 profile continues to exist
someplace--just not presently accessible from the Start Menu.

I have been using 1.1.18, subsequent to installing 2.0.3, for accessing
the web and my mail. Version 1.1.18 appears to be working normally.
That tells me that my profile is alive and well someplace--just not
showing on the Start menu.

I know that the ICONs for 2.0.3 on the Desktop are working and they take
me to the 2.0.3 browser or the mail page, as appropriate. The SeaMonkey
entry that exists in the Start menu belongs to 2.0.3. The Start menuAll
ProgramsSeamonkey entry belongs to 2.0.3. The Profile Manager for the
listed StartSeaMonkeyProfile Manager (default) is also tied to 2.0.3.

Note that I have only one profile for 1.1.18, and now it appears that I
have one profile (default) on 2.0.3.

Does any of what I have written here make sense? If not, I will try
again.

I hope this helps clear some things up for you.

I did something that I hope I will not regret. I believe I can easily
undo what I did; so, let me tell you about my actions. I copied, from a
recent backup of my system (made before SeaMonkey 2.0.3 was added), the
Start Menu entry for SeaMonkey 1.1.18 to the Desktop. Information was
taken from F:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs. The
F Drive is a USB connected hard drive used only for making backups of my
system. I renamed the file on the Desktop from SeaMonkey to SeaMonkey1.
Next, using Windows Explorer, I moved the SeaMonkey1 file to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs. This allowed
me to have access to my SeaMonkey 1.1.18 profile, etc. It seems that
everything continues to work properly--the Desktop ICONs and the Start

Re: Nail Newsgroup Account Settings and Leave Messages on Server Settings (More)

2010-02-28 Thread Mark Hansen

So what I see when I click startAll ProgramsSeaMonkey belongs to
2.0.3. Should I find a way to also include a Start menu entry for
1.1.18? If so, how do I do that?

You don't have to. If you want to create them, they are no different
than the shortcuts you created on the desktop. In fact, you can just
drag the icon from the desktop using your right-clickdrag and drag
it to your start menu (navigating into the specific menu area) and
release, then select Copy Here (or whatever).

How do I look at the 1.1.18 Profile Manager? This entry no longer
 exists in my Start menu.

Create one (as shown before). The command-line option is -ProfileManager.
However, you can just launch the browser and go to Tools - Switch
Profile - much easier.

I don't know what you have on your start menu. If the last SM installed
was 2.X, and it installed the start menu items into the same place that
SM 1.1.X did (which I *think* is the default), then it would point to
SM 2.X.

Perhaps the easiest way would be to launch SM 2.X, and go to Tools -
Switch Profile (if this exists on SM 2.X - I don't know for sure as
I'm not running that version yet).

All except for the last point. Think of the Profile Manager as just another
SM application component (like Browser or Mail Newsgroup). If you're
running SM 1.1.X, then no matter what you run, you're going to see the
Profile Manager for SM 1.1.X.

This is where I get a little fuzzy with my thinking. I do hear what you
are telling me--my problem likely has to do with my limited technical
knowhow. I do understand that my 1.1.18 profile continues to exist
someplace--just not presently accessible from the Start Menu.

The start menu includes shortcuts to applications, not profile data.
If you're start menu includes shortcuts for SM 2.X, and you want one
for SM 1.1.X, just add it, as described before. So it doesn't become
confusing, you may want to rename your existing shortcuts so it's
clear they belong to SM 2.X.

I have been using 1.1.18, subsequent to installing 2.0.3, for accessing
the web and my mail. Version 1.1.18 appears to be working normally.
That tells me that my profile is alive and well someplace--just not
 showing on the Start menu.

Again, the profile does not show on the start menu.

That all seems correct.

Note that I have only one profile for 1.1.18, and now it appears that I
have one profile (default) on 2.0.3.

That also is as expected (unless you took steps in either application to
create additional profiles).

Does any of what I have written here make sense? If not, I will try
 again.

I believe I've understood everything you've said :) If you think I've
missed something, please let me know.

I really appreciate your patience and help. I would be totally lost
without help from individuals like yourself.

No problem.
Best Regards,

Okay, I see that you've posted a follow-up, so now I'm going to go and

No problem, but I think you went way overboard in creating these

However, if they're working for you, then I don't see any other

a link or an image from the browser to a directory and wget would
automatically start and download the file. Nice feature.

In all seamonkey-2.x series so far this option seems not possible. I

seamonkey myself (several times) and still can not get this
functionality. Is there a ./configure option to enable this? If there
is I would have thought it would be the default.

Any help will be appreciated.

Puppy must be doing something special, because the term drag a link or an image
from the browser to a directory doesn't connect with any behavior I've seen,
there being no directory anywhere in sight.

As far as the action goes, I assume you would right click and use either save
image or save link target to get the pop-up menu and select a destination.

Other than installing Puppy in a VM I can't imagine what you are actually doing.

I don't have any that really require xsidebar at this point.

The need for xsidebar was to provide a way to make the extension options
accessible. With the Addons Manager, that is no longer an issue.

xsidebar is still a neat extension though.

Thanks Bill for reply.

Ever since I have been using Puppy it has been the default behaviour
to drag and drop files from Seamonkey-1.1x to an oen folder in Rox-
Filer, the file manager used in puppy. Barry Kauler, the creator of
Puppy actually mentioned his dislike of Seamonkey-2.x on his blog
because this is not possible any more.

The procedure is very basic, just like dragging one file from one
window to another. It works for images or links. Immediately wget
starts and downloads the file to the location you dragged. I hope that
clarifies what myself and many Puppy users are actually doing.

I haven't used Seamonkey 1.1x in another distro so I don't know if it
works in other distros. It might well be a Rox-Filer feature,
incompatible with Seamonkey-2.x.

There was one extension that required xSidebar That I used in 1.1.18.
it was and extension that put graphical emoticons in plaintext. the
advantage was that some of the more unusual emoticons that you don't
normally remember are in the list. Basically it is the same list as used
in the html Mail. I'd love to install it in SM but I've forgotten the
name of it.

Re: lost inbox messages on 2.0.3 install over 1.1.7

Well, this doesn't look as a lost messages case, it looks like a
failed to import messages case. The messages are PROBABLY still where
they always were -- in the old Seamonkey 1.1.x profile. They just
weren't copied to the new profile.

In this case, the simplest thing to do would be to copy the old inbox.
file to the new profile. I really don't remember right now where the old
profile is located, but the new one should be on
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application
Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\[random string].default\Mail

I must warn, while mail folders are pretty safe, most other stuff
shouldn't be simply copied from the old profile to the new one -- there
were format changes and whatnot that can cause problems. The recommended
procedure is to use the import tool.

By the way, 43,000 messages is a pretty big inbox. In my experience,
after a few thousand messages, performance degrades a lot. You might
wish to eventually move older messages to another folder.

And... just checking: when you say you loaded 2.0.3 over 1.1.17, did
you by chance force it to install in the same folder as 1.1.17? Because,
well, there are technical reasons why the default install folder has
changed... mainly, that the program changed enough that installing over
the old one is a Bad Idea.

Email continues to work, until I close all Seamonkey instances while

What happens then is Seamonkey pops up a box that complains it is
already running, and to close that Seamonkey before trying to run.

But there are no visible instances of Seamonkey running.

Going to the Task Manager, I see an instance of Seamonkey IS running. So
I kill it in Task Manager.
 Then I kill it again.
Then I kill it again ... etc. etc.

 The Seamonkey process is unkillable.

I have to at this point re-boot before the browser starts working again.

What can I do to help get this fixed? There is no crash report because
Seamonkey is unaware it's munged and unreachable.

 Help!
