I found the best solution (best for me) to be with the PrefBar extension
from . I
imported into PrefBar the Permissions Menu menulist from

to get the old Cookies Manager.

On the Cookie Websites tab, I deleted entries for Web sites that
indicate "website can set cookes" and re-entered those sites with the
Session button. If I want to block a Web site completely from setting
cookies, I select the Stored Cookies tab on Cookie Manager. I check the
"Don't allow websites that set removed cookies to set future cookies"

Note that, after the Stored Cookies tab indicates only those cookies I
really want to keep, I terminate the Cookie Manager and SeaMonkey.
After making sure that everything is terminated, I locate cookies.sqlite
in my profile and mark it "read-only". Web sites might think they are
setting persistent cookies but those cookies do not get written to their
database when SeaMonkey is terminated. They all become "session only".

Thank you, David, for providing your work-arounds, but, if I mark a
cookie as "Allow for Session Only", why does SM ignore my wishes and
change the cookies setting to "Allow". Do the Devs know better, or
something??

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64)
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101 SeaMonkey/2.39

That is not happening for me.

I think I can see what is happening and it appears my permissions.sqlite
is corrupt. Taking a site at random (ok, its near the top)
http://123people.com
When I look at the permissions for that site, "Set Cookies" is in there
twice - two lines for the one entry - changing one of the lines works,
the second one is resilient.
Maybe I could get out of this if it was possible to delete permissions
but it does not appear to be.

possibility 1 - rename the file and start again.
possibility 2 - get some utility which can clean up a "SQLite 3.x
database, user version 8" under Linux.
possibility 3 - "it does not matter what the second line says, it is the
first one which counts" would be the perfect solution!

Something which could compress places.sqlite (21GB) or
webappsstore.sqlite (10GB) would also not be a bad idea. Further
research is called for. Thanks.

Re: AdBlock Plus alternatives in SeaMonkey?

2015-11-30 Thread Ant

Have you clicked Preferences for the extension in Add-ons Manager and
looked at the Dashboard and Logger?

Yep, they were interesting and confusing too!

Does uBlock Origin have an official online forum? I am still confused on
how to determine what is being blocked and how to make a filter after
reading the Wiki. For an example,
http://www.amc.com/shows/talking-dead/full-episodes/season-06/episode-08/talking-dead-on-start-to-finish
has a blocked login screen in order to watch this video. I can easily
try to figure out how what filter(s) to unblock to test and whitelist in
ABP. :(

I haven't looked at memory usage. Not that interested since I have 8 GB
RAM.

Ha, I have 2-3 GB depending on which box! :P So far, I haven't seen it
go over 512 MB yet. I know with ABP, it can go up to over a GB! :(

OK, I still see SM go crazy with RAM and slow speeds with too many tabs
going on.

I might have to go back to ABP. :(

Is there a way to get the Adobe Reader "into" SM
or have it go there automatically ?

You might try an uninstall/reinstall of Reader.

I don't currently use Adobe, and I haven't seen the behavior recently,
but I know with both Foxit and PDFXchange, there's installation options
that allow for the reader being installed, and where you can specify
calling as the default option for handling .PDF.

If you're playing with PDF readers, you might want to consider a
non-Adobe tool.

Remember that Adobe's design of Acrobat and PDF is as an
enterprise-grade document management system. The expectation is that the
user launches Reader at the beginning of the day, and leaves it open
(either as a full window, or background, in the System Tray), and is
interacting frequently with PDF content. As a result, Reader has a lot
of plugins -- those chew up a lot of resources (memory and launch time),
and only a small fraction of those plug-ins are needed for simple
viewing of PDF content.

If you need something specific that Adobe provides (such as capacity for
encrypted email, forms handling and data collection, etc.) Reader is a
great tool. If all you need is occasionally to read a PDF-formatted
file, then Reader is overkill, IMHO.

I've found that both Foxit and PDFXchange Viewer are smaller and
lighter: both are faster, and consume less resources.
