My installation of the SeaMonkey executable is on a hard drive
 different
from its profiles. However, you must note that sometimes the problem
 is
not with the SeaMonkey executable but with a corrupted profile. Thus,
before trying to re-install SeaMonkey, try creating a new profile and
then see if the problem exists in the new profile.

I don't care all that much that it's Chinese companies but I do wonder
how they're going to get back their $600 million + profit. If Opera
was making all that much money off their browser why'd they sell it?

They sold the browser, so I'd guess no control, involvement,
direction, or anything:
https://techcrunch.com/2016/07/18/opera-renegotiates-its-1-2b-sale-down-to-600m-for-browser-privacy-apps-chinese-jv/
Opera will sell the Qihoo 360-led consortium its mobile and desktop
browser operations, its performance and privacy apps, its tech
licensing not including Opera TV; and Opera’s 29 percent stake in
Chinese JV nHorizon.

Opera’s remaining business that is not part of the sale will include
Opera Mediaworks, Opera Apps & Games (including Bemobi) and Opera TV,
along with about 560 employees.

If other programs are affected, it's an operating system issue, has to
be fixed there.

In Windows 7, right-click an empty area of the desktop, choose
"Personalize," and in the lower left corner of that page, click "Display."

Or go directly there by choosing Start | Control Panel | Display.

Those should get automatically updated. For instance, in about:config,
search for:

mail.server.server1.directory

It should display two preferences. "mail.server.server1.directory" which
shows the entire path, and "mail.server.server1.directory-rel" which
shows the relative path. If the first one doesn't work, it will use the
second one, and update the first.
The code for it was implemented in 2003:

I've always copied \users\whatever\appdata\roaming\mozilla\seamonkey
to the new machine first and then installed seamonkey.

I have a directory with all my installed programs, so it was easy
enough to get the old stuff installed on the mew machine. In other
words, I dunno what happens when helper apps aren't installed yet :(

To support what Chris said, I have had no problem moving profile from
Windows to Linux

from:
C:\Users\Jonathan\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\

to:
/home/jonathan/.mozilla/seamonkey/

Just works, and you cannot get more different than moving to a different
OS and filesystem.

With SeaMonkey terminated, you will then have to go manually through the
file prefs.js to change any paths containing RAY to have RZ. Also, in
the same prefs.js, you might have to change any printer names if those
are different between the two systems. Etc, etc.

Yes, I did this going to Windows 7. It was easy but tedious. And I had
to do it for each of my four profiles.

Michael, if you did a pretty standard installation of SeaMonkey, the
Program is in one location and the Profile is in another.

When you uninstall SM, it should just remove the Program, and then, when
you re-install it, it will "find" the Profile.

Hmm, but nor that I re-read your post, you are asking about Preferences,
which, logically is part of your Profile, so should be safe!!
