Compacting a file that's only the minimum/initial size to start with I would
expect to produce little to no improvement.

What is your RAM size? What gfxchip is in your PC (Intel and certain others
share main RAM.)?

This is one of those blogs that loads more content as you approach the
bottom of the page. I tested it as far back as February 1, at which
point SeaMonkey was taking up 2 GB of RAM according to Windows Task
Manager. I then closed the page, opened a blank browser window, and
cleared private data, which took SM back down to its usual 500 MB (I
have a lot of old mail), and CPU usage fell back to 5%.

My computer has plenty of capacity for this, so it didn't slow down
much, YMMV.

You can integrate "Open With" into the page context menu (among others).
Just look at the extension's settings.

Instead of re marking it as unread, you can right click on the
heading and select "tag". This gives you a range of types of
tags with different colors. I have never used it except to try
it out. Try that out.

I already have 26 tags defined. Some based on subject. Some based
on importance. Some messages have 3 or 4 tags applied. Under
Views->Message->Custom Views I have 14 listed. I also display the
total number of unread messages in each folder so it seems
reasonable to wish change some *VISIBLE* attribute of the
folder's name when there is a *NEW* message present. Rather than
that all but infinitesimal microscopic arrow.

I suggest you explore settings of this addon about:openwith
There is a section called "Choose how to display Open With items" --
https://al-ribat.6in4.net/~nazir/tmp/openwith-options.png
there you can define display items in the context menu...
It is an excellent addon and its author deserves a few euros/dollars,
IMHO...

You can integrate "Open With" into the page context menu (among others).
Just look at the extension's settings.
