Are you asking about filters on E-mail accounts, newsgroup accounts, or
RSS feeds?

newsgroup accounts

Newsgroup accounts do not support folders.

I used the wrong term "Folder". In my Newsgroup "News.Mozilla.Org". there are seven
"groups",
"folders" or whatever the correct terminology is. This post is in the "group"
called
"mozilla.support.seamonkey. So the question is: when I set up a filter for
"news.mozilla.org" does
the filter also apply to all seven "groups" below it or do I have to set up the
same filter for each
"group"?

The filter applies to the subscription. For this one, it is
mozilla.support.seamonkey.

Agree, That is why I was using the term "Folders" when I originally started

A newsgroup in an account is not normally described as a folder.
Folders are found in E-mail and RSS feed accounts.

Generally, that's true, and I agree it makes sense. But if you follow
Daniel's instructions in this thread, the option to apply a filter to a
particular NG is expressed as "Apply to folder...," with the NG names
appearing as available "folders" for selection.

That should probably be fixed, since it's confusing.

You can setup filters on the overall account, which then apply to all
newsgroups in that account. You can also setup filters on individual
newsgroups.

A newsgroup in an account is not normally described as a folder.
Folders are found in E-mail and RSS feed accounts.

Consider:
* Most state mandate that drivers have liability insurance.
* Employers are mandated to have worker's compensation insurance.
* If you live in a flood zone, flood insurance is mandatory.
* If your home has a mortgage, fire insurance is mandatory.

Why then is mandatory health insurance so bad??

If you setup a filter for "news.mozilla.org" it applies to all
newsgroups on the server.

It is how I have my filter setup.

AFAIK filters apply to accounts, not folders, though you can manually
select a folder and apply it. So when mail arrives for that account, it
is processed through whatever filters you have set up, in the order of
priority you have established (by default, newly created filters are
ordered first, but you can reorder them if you so choose).

So in that scenario, if a message has been moved, say, to your Spam
folder, the remaining filters will not apply to it since the message is
no longer available to them.
