When you click on "Check For Updates", SM 2.46 tries to access the URL at

https://aus2-community.mozilla.org

Both the Avast and AVG (and possibly other anti-virus programs) consider that
URL to be infected,
unreliable or has some problem that gives you the "There were problems ..."
error message. To stop
that error message and allow SM 2.46 to give you the latest update status of
your current SM
version, you have to open your Anti-Virus Settings and add
https://aus2-community.mozilla.org to
your URL exception list.

Hi:

There were problems checking for, downloading, or installing this
update. SeaMonkey could not be updated because:
Update XML file malformed (200)

Another example of an update failure with a different message was posted
recently, which also affected my system the same way. The fix was to
add the update URL as an exception to my AVG antivirus 'Online Shield'
component so it doesn't block the site. You may want to see if the same
type of thing can be done for your AV install.

The URL to ignore checks on was 'https://aus2-community.mozilla.org/'.

What were you trying to update? SeaMonkey 2.46 is the latest
available OFFICIAL release.

It's reasonable for the OP to check for updates, which should not
produce this error. When I do it, I get the usual message:

No Updates Found
There are no updates available. SeaMonkey will
check periodically for updates.

If I disable the automatic check, I get:
No Updates Found
Please check again later or enable SeaMonkey's

O.K., so if the Linux i686 on x64_86 is an actual 64bit version, what is
the difference between it and the straight x64_86 version??

Is it tied up with the differences in CPU's, AMD v Intel?

Daniel,

This has been explained you you previously, but I'll try to explain one
more time. Apologies as I should have noticed earlier.

You are running the 32bit version of SeaMonkey on a 64bit linux. Just to
show you I'm posting this from the same:

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686 on x86_64; rv:15.0)

OK, now back on SeaMonkey 2.12 from a 64bit build:

See the difference?

Now, you can stay on the 32bit version - it won't hurt will work - or
you can use the 64bit version. To be honest, I've not tested the 32bit
on a 64bit machine to compare the differences. So I can't tell you which
is better. However you *need* to understand the version that you are
running is 32bit, it is *not* the 64bit version.

If you want to run the 64bit version you will need to use the
contributed build, and you will not, repeat *not* get any updates

On Moon Landings, during Science Week, in mid-August, the local
Astronomy Society (of which I'm a member) joined with one of the local
Universities for some activities, one of which was a presentation from
one of the staff at Parkes Radio Telescope about the search for the
original tapes of Neil and Buzz on the moon.

Due to the alignment of the Earth and Moon at the time of first
footfall, Parkes was the primary relay site for data from the Moon.

After a search over several years, including searches at NASA and JPL,
some tapes have been found and put onto DVD, which I've yet to watch.

I also pointed you to a thread regarding the update issue from 2.11.x to
2.12.x 64bit.

So hang on Daniel, are you suggesting that you didn't read comprehend
what I wrote? Are you also suggesting that you didn't bother to read the
thread I pointed you to? Here let me point it out again:

Linux i686 on x86_64
There is no mar built for 64bit (see my [linux-64bit] 2.12 mar?

Stop wasting everyone's time by asking nonsensical 'are you suggesting'
when I clearly didn't. RTFT.

There is no mar built for 64bit (see my [linux-64bit] 2.12 mar?
thread). You'll need to download it and install:

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/#2.12
Contributed builds (other platforms)

These are unofficial builds and may be configured differently than the
official SeaMonkey builds. Please read their readme files for further
information.

Linux/x86_64
 Linux/x86_64 .tar.bz2 (readme) (MD5 sum) (SHA1 sum)

I run mine in a single home folder /home/user/seamonkey/seamonkey. So
I copy the Linux/x86_64.tar.bz2 to /home/user/seamonkey/ move the
former '/home/user/seamonkey/seamonkey' to
'/home/user/seamonkey/seamonkey2.11', extract the Linux/x86_64.tar.bz2
and it extract to as the new improved
/home/user/seamonkey/seamonkey.

So, hang on, NoOp, are you suggesting that after I installed the full
seamonkey-2.3.3.tar.bz2, any updates that I (automatically or manually)
received were of the Linux i686 on x86_64 variety??

We have, a few times, manually created Linux x64 based updates, but it
is a very time consuming and manual process. We do plan to start
creating those again in the future, but it is not on our immediate plate.

Oh!! O.K.!! I thought I had been getting the real x86_64 updates all along!!

Did you install SeaMonkey by downloading manually from Mozilla, or from
your distributions software management application?

If you downloaded, and installed manually, repeat that step.

If you installed from your distributions software management system,
check it for an update

All of my updates, Walt, have come directly from seamonkey-project,
usually by applying the 6 weekly updates but, occasionally downloading
the full program (if I leave the updating to long!!).

It's just that this time when I try to do the update from SM 2.11 to
2.12 (before the 2.12.1 update is issued), I get the indications above.

I received that message once in a Firefox Aurora, Beta, or Nightly
(forget which one) tried it later, and it worked.

There could be many reasons why it failed. Maybe they had the mirrors
closed while SM 2.12.1 was being distributed from the ftp server.

Try again, or download and install from the SM site.
