It *wasn't* really difficult before, but now with the new unibody case
you risk cross-threading the screws that hold the back plate on...which
would ruin the case top as far as getting the back plate to stay put.
Not really something you go doing more than once anymore, and certainly
not for troubleshooting *one* app when nothing else about the machine is
going wrong. In fact, the battery is no longer even user
replaceable/removable with the latest unibody case - the first ones at
least had a release lever and a half shell so you could get in there
easily...that was far, far better design from a user standpoint.

So I'm not keen on pulling my 'Book apart again unless I need to put a
new hard drive in it...which ain't straight forward anymore either.
So, after studying on rebuilding my Profiles I'd rather just wipe SM and
do a clean install of the pending 2.1 release and manually restore some
files and see what I get. It'll be a pain, but at least I won't be
risking damage to my case.

What I'm wondering is if there isn't something else software related
that that I could try to address the additional RAM for the install as
far as SM is concerned - like a PRAM reset or something. Which again is
overkill for *one* misbehaving app.

But I'm also way puzzled as to why all of these crash clusters have a
different crash reason/signature - I had another cluster of crashes just
last night with all my plug-ins still turned off except for Flash. I
can't recall the reason - I'm on my (SM stable) iMac right now. But it
wasn't any of the kernel protection, bad Cairo font, or bad instruction
call one(s) that I've seen to date - it was something different again.
Every cluster seems to have some new reason...

But the same cluster of crashes on restart attempts, and then return to
being stable after a reboot. Which smacks of some write, cache, or
swap file hang or error...whatever...until cleared by a reboot. Then
over some period of SM session up-time it happens all over again.

One thing I have done to this machine recently is to add more RAM - I
plus-d it up to 8 Gig of RAM from 4. SM began acting up shortly after
that, but none of my other apps - I've run Techtool on the install and
the memory checks good, the machine recognizes and reports it, so I'd
like to think that merely upgrading RAM wouldn't affect SM.

Would/should it?..

Hrm. Try removing the extra 4GB temporarily.

Phil

That's way more work than it's worth, given that nothing else on my
'Book is misbehaving.

What? ... way more work? I don't do Apple but, where's the hard work?
Geez, in my Win laptop or any of my towers that's maybe 5 minutes from
shutdown to reboot. If you don't have 5 minutes to try a solution ...?

I have to get out a screwdriver and remove 11 screws to open up my
MacBook Pro - it's one of the new milled aluminum ones. Then I have to
pop out the new, perfectly fine RAM that Techtool tests prefectly good
and downgrade my machine...screw it back together and run it for some
time...then do it all over again (and risk stripping the threads on my
case each time) to get back to the upgrade I payed for and have already
installed successfully? All for *one* misbehaving app? No, thanks...

Besides, if anyone is trying to suggest that SM can't run stable on a
machine with more than 4G of RAM installed I'd be *HIGHLY* skeptical of
that...though it is curious that my other installation on my Intel iMac
(with 4G) is rock solid with *zero* logged crashes. If it were my iMac
it would only be *one* screw...but still...

What I will do is wait for the release of SM 2.1, back up my Mail and
Bookmarks, and totally wipe this install...then rebuild.

Sounds like an incredibly stupid hw design. My laptop (Thinkpad) takes

I still like my destroy and reinstall scenario better...

Apple is taking to making their consumer level gear more and more
inaccessible of late, with the exception of the newest Mini...that one
is actually made so the user can add RAM more easily as opposed to the
older ones. The new MacBook Pro cases don't even make the battery easy
to access.

The Apple unitized appliance design all started with the iPods...I
don't much like the concept either, but I do like and prefer working
on/with Apple hardware/software to the Dell/Windoze crap I have to
tolerate at work.

Once again, a reboot got SM stable enough to use this install to make
this post.

After reboot, I had the following files in a Recovered Items folder in
my Trash - a plugtmp folder with plugin-300x250.swf and
plugin-728_ink.swf files in it.

In the recent cluster of 11/30/10 crashes the crash reason listed is -

EXC_BAD_ACCESS / KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE

for all of them, and the Signature is -

_moz_cairo_pattern_destroy

...but this isn't anything like what is listed for the others. At least
two of these crashes occurred on SM restart attempts, the rest occurred
on opening Mail/News. As I recall...

Only next step I can think of would be to completely destroy/wipe this
install and rebuild everything...none of my other SM installs on either
of my two other machines are behaving this way - just my MacBook Pro.

And it's getting damn annoying...

What graphics card are you using? Since you're on a MBP, try switching
to the other built-in graphics card.

I'm using the low-power GPU...I'll give it a try, but none of the
history indicates that simply switching GPUs will stop this.

... but macs never crash???

b

My Mac isn't crashing - SeaMonkey is. And *only* SeaMonkey.

What info specifically do you want? Give me an example of the spec...

I want you to go to the Plugins tab of the Addons Manager and disable
all the plugins there (perhaps with the exception of Flash) as an

every few days until the crashes come back.
