SM 2.2: Right-click menu on Google map covers Google's right-click menu

2011-08-21 Thread flyguy
When I'm using Google Maps to get driving directions, I often
right-click on my destination. When I do in SM 2.2, I get the usual menu
(Reload, View image, Block image, Copy image, etc), overlaying the
Google menu (Directions to here, Zoom in, Zoom out, Center map here, etc).

I have found a workaround: after right-clicking, press the ESC key, and
the top menu closes.

Is it a problem in SM? Is there a way to fix it?

The expected (Google) behavior works for me with SeaMonkey 2.3.

See Preferences-Advanced-Scripts and Plugins-Allow Javascript to...

Disable and replace context menu's

BINGO! That did it. Boy, that was subtle - something I'd never seen
before - and I never would have guessed it was script problem.

Now I'm wondering how it got unchecked, because the behavior in Google
was correct before I upgraded to 2.2.

SM 2.2: Full Screen (f11) reorders window icons on task bar

2011-08-19 Thread flyguy
Every morning, I open 2 browser windows, an email window, and another
browser window. I drag the first browser window to my 7 Lilliput
display, then use F11 to fill it with that browser window. That causes
the window icon on the task bar to move to the top of the heap. In
fact, any browser window that is changed to Full Screen moves to the top.

With SM 2.0.xx, the widow order in the task bar did not change, and I
liked that because it's easier to keep track of which window is which on
the task bar.

A new behavior, or a setting I changed somehow?

SM 2.2 - lost my html editing controls

2011-08-10 Thread David Duling
I have been using Seamonkey for several years for editing simple HTML
pages with CSS, tables, images, etc... I just installed SM 2.2. I
have a couple of problems...

* I have this weird exploding image selection behavior with no outline
of the selected image, which makes it difficult to see if you are
selecting and opening the right now.

* In normal edit mode, I no longer have the nifty controls for adding
and deleting table elements. I rely on these.

I am surprised that I don't see anything about this in the release
notes, help, or this support group. Is there some secret control to
re-enable those features that I need ?

Thanks, David

I'll be curious about the answer to your problems. I've rejected the
move to SM 2.2 solely because of the HTML page composer issues that
users have complained about since its release. I guess the bottom line
is that I'm waiting for 2.3 to see if people indicate that the problems
have been eliminated (but I fear that isn't a priority, so I doubt it is
happening.) My fallback is using kompozer instead of SM's Composer; but
that sort of eliminates the advantages of a browser *suite*, doesn't it?
Why else do we use SeaMonkey if we don't want a suite with all the
components working?

You might try the 2.3b3 release, at least on Linux the composer does the things
you mention. I haven't checked to see if the two critical address book errors
are fixed, maybe tomorrow.

SM 2.2 - don't like new search bar in mail/mews

2011-08-04 Thread Gerry Hickman

Hi,

I've just updated to SM 2.2, in the mail and news window there's a new
tool bar called the search bar that takes up quite a lot of room. In
the old 2.0, the search boxes were part of the message list pane and
were very compact, and more intuitive.

Yes, you can collapse the bar and then expand it when you need it, but

You can put the search box on the top toolbar by customizing that one; and
then collapse the separate search bar. That makes it compact again.

Yes, SM 2.2 contained more issues than usual. We tried to fix some
issues 2.1 had but others popped up, especially in MailNews and the
address book (some things were not fixed entirely, and changes
Thunderbird developers made to shared MailNews code were not fixed on
our end fast enough).

2.2 was the first release after we switched to the rapid release
process, and in this case we had even fewer time than the usual 6-18
weeks that the process dictates because 2.1 had already been delayed.

Also there are some problems that appear due to the all-volunteer nature
of the project. There are only very few developers in the first place,
reviews (which are mandatory for any code change) take quite long. In
former times (before 2.2) we had many months time to fix things and
release when it's ready. Now we're pretty much date-driven. This
requires paying more attention to regressions by everyone involved.
There is a lesson to be learned there, and I think 2.3 will be better
overall [even though I personally would have voted to respin 2.3b1 so
that we don't release a beta with major issues that are already known to
be fixed for 2.3].

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the rapid, date-driven release process
either but we have little choice: Security fixes (which usually affect
Gecko or other code shared with Firefox) are only fixed on the latest
stable Mozilla platform version so we cannot skip one without exposing
our users to security risks. This is (very) unfortunate but nothing we
can influence, so there is no point in complaining about it. We have to
make the best out of it.

So does the API of Gecko change with every release? I would think you would be
calling for services and fixes would be in the service. Does it really change so
much that you can't link against the current code?

I like the Linux model, where stability fixes are provided against recent
releases, so people don't have to constantly upgrade. I would think that was a
problem for Mozilla and corporate users as well, and a reason to provide bug fix
only support for 90 days or six months, or something reasonable. No corporation
I have supported would update softweare every six weeks, other than to apply
patches.

Might be an interesting read:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20074590-264/rapid-release-firefox-meets-corporate-backlash/

Frankly, I think Mozilla has lost touch, expecting people to do an upgrade every
six weeks. And forced silent upgrades? I may be wrong, that may be default
rather than forced, you can protect yourself if you remember to do so. Still,
no support after six weeks seems to be ceding the serious browser market to others.

An interesting read indeed.

Basically it means that a new major stable version is released every six
weeks, and security updates will only be fixed for that new version; the
previous versions are discontinued instantly. Since the Mozilla platform
(the rendering engine Gecko etc.) is bound to the Firefox release
schedule, that decision didn't leave us with much of a choice. We had to
follow suit(e).

This was brought up by the Firefox guys, who wanted to have more and
quicker releases to bring new features (especially support for new web
technologies) to the 200+ million people that use Firefox. Previously
new major stable versions only appeared after many months, often years.
Their decision made some waves; especially corporate users are now
mostly left in the cold. Efforts were announced to work on those issues
but it's unclear what the outcome will be.

Very many thanks, Jens : much appreciated. My personal feeling is
that this does not bode well, for Firefox, for Seamonkey and for
anything Gecko-based. I just hope I am proved wrong.

SM 2.2 state WAS: Sidebar Search change in 2.2

2011-07-28 Thread Jens Hatlak

hawker wrote:

That said 2.2 has had the most regression bugs,
lost features and new bugs of any version I have seen since before 1.0.
I hope this new rapid release is not causing SM quality to suffer and
this is just a bad build that we will get past. What is the feeling of
the development team on this build or is this just the build where the
issues have finally gotten to areas that affect me?

Jens

Really I would never recommend an alpha for a user, and barely even a

The 2.4a2 is nightly builds without _any_ quality assurance from us

For that strategy, I find it helpful to drag and drop the message in
question to a folder that contains few or no other messages before
closing SM and launching the editor. That makes it easier to find in the
editor. Once I'm done, I can relaunch SM and drag the message back to
the desired folder.

SM 2.2 : Shift Middle-click on link behavior reversed

2011-07-22 Thread OBones
Hello,

I just upgraded from 2.0.14 to 2.2 and now when I middle click on a
link, the tab is opened but not focused, while if I maintain Shift
pressed as I middle click it instantly gives focus to the new tab.
This use to be the opposite in 2.0.14, that is, I had to maintain
Shift pressed if I wanted the tab to be opened but not focused.
How can I get the old behavior back? I went through the options and
could not find anything obvious, nor did anything came up obvious in
about:config

Upgrading to SM 2.2. causes loss of function in vital accessory

2011-07-22 Thread Ken
I tonight installed SM 2.2. With my browser I have long used an
integrated password,etc.-remembering tool, RoboForm Pro.

Tonight one box that appeared unbidden on my screen was headed
[JavaScript Application]. The first line read, 'The Adapter supports
only seamonkey ver. 2.0 to 2.9.*.'

Something wrong there, no? The latest SM version is 2.2, right? Which
is what I just installed.

The next line read, 'You are using seamonkey ver. rv:5.0'. Huh?

The last line read, 'Click Ok to go to web page that explains how to
install RoboForm Adapter as extension.' Well, I clicked on Ok as
instructed. Result: a blank page.

Near the top of my screen is a RoboForm line which now reads just
'Unsupported browser'.

Further frustration. Looks like I can't go back to SM 2.0.18 (I think
it was) which is what I was using before. The 'Known Issues' note for
SM 2.2 is headed (in bold), 'Data loss warning' and continues: 'If you
use a profile with this or any later version and then try to go back to
SeaMonkey 2.0, SeaMonkey will rename your history file to
places.sqlite.corrupt and create a new places.qlite file, effectively
resetting your browsing history.'

Well, I don't pretend to understand all of that, but it does seem to be
saying that I will lose data if I try to restore the SM version I had
before. No?

Please, any helpful comments?

Thanks - Ken (in Oz)

browser and Apple's Java.

You need to check to make sure you have Java Plug in 2 for NPAPI

To check for the Java 2 plug in go to the Seamonkey help menu and
click on it. Click on the last item About Plugins and a list of all
your installed plugins. Apple's Java will not work if Java 2 Plug-in
is missing.

I hope this helps.
As it turns out I had to uninstall Java Embedding Plugin by deleting the
following two files:

JavaEmbeddingPlugin.bundle
MRJPlugin.plugin

Once I did that, Java operated fine in SM2.2 and, yes, I do have Java 2
Plugin enabled. Thanks

[Ubuntu 11.04 / SM 2.2] How to find a particular bookmark?

2011-07-15 Thread Rob Lindauer
Is there a way easily to determine in which of my bookmark folders (I
have many) a particular bookmark is stored in?

I know the bookmark is there somewhere (because SM won't add a new
bookmark when I attempt to bookmark an already-bookmarked site, and
because within bookmark manager I can search / find the bookmark).

However, I can't (easily) determine which folder the bookmark's in (the
containing folder isn't indicated in the search result).

BTW - is SM's refusal to add another instance of an already existing
bookmark (via the browser's bookmark this page menu option)
intentional? Nothing seems to happen when I do that (but within the
bookmark manager I can cut/paste additional copies of an existing
bookmark, so I can't imagine why there'd be a browser restriction).

If you open the bookmark and click the bookmark icon at the end of the
location bar, the containing folder is shown.

Unfortunately there is no easy way (that I know of) from the search
results. Philip Chee's xSidebar provided a context menu item for that
for the old Bookmark Manager, but that was using the old back-end.

Yes. The idea is to add tags (which was not possible in former times) in
such cases and otherwise only store a location once, since that allows
to store and optionally show additional information such as last visited
date and number of visits (in combination with the browsing history,
which is now stored in the same database).

You want to check that you have the Java Plug in 2 for NPAPI browser

I'm not getting any problem. However, I recall that I had to reset the
Java checkbox in my preferences after going from SM 2.0.14 to SM 2.1 (or
was it from SM 2.1 to 2.2?).

1. On the menu bar, go to [Edit Preferences].

2. On the left side of the Preferences window under Category, go to

3. On the Advanced pane, make sure the Enable Java checkbox is checked.

4. Then, on the left side of the Preferences window under Category, go
to [Advanced Scripts Plugins].

5. Make sure the checkbox for Browser is checked. You might also want
to review and adjust what scripts are allowed to do.

The only two checkboxes that I have checked are:
Change status bar text
Change images

However, none of the checkboxes on the Scripts Plugins pane --
including the Browser checkbox under Enable JavaScript for -- should
have any connection to Java. Java and JavaScript are two completely
different entities.

On the SeaMonkey menu bar, go to [Help About Plugins]. On the
Enabled plugins page, scroll down to Java(TM) Platform. What
version number do you see? I have 6.0.260.3, but that's for Windows XP.
You apparently are using a MAC. The Java download site says: Apple

Maneuver the little ring in the large colored circle and the slider on
the Brightness bar below the colored circle. The default is
background color.

You should see the background color in the rectangle under Sample
Document change to match the position of the little ring, and you
should see the number after Brightness change as you move the slider
(0 at the far left and 100 at the far right). Also, the hex color-codes
should change both to the right of the word Background and after
BGCOLOR in the mark-up area just under the radio buttons.

You select different radio buttons to see color changes for text, links,
etc.

I use this as an added test each time I get a new version of Java. Of
course, I also use this to determine the color-codes to use on my Web
pages and in Word documents.

I don't think the link rendered correctly since there is no little ring
in the large colored circle or slider or radio buttons... just some
text.

Okay, you have a problem with your configuration. I got what I

I've been controlling mine via userChrome.css for probably at least 7
 years.

This goes in the chrome folder in your profile (not the chrome folder in
the SeaMonkey root). If you don't already have a file named
userChrome.css, copy the userChrome-example.css and rename it to be
 userChrome.css.

Edit userChrome.css to contain the following:
/* Font size on tabs */
 .tabbrowser-tab { font-size: 110% !important }

The first line is merely a comment to document the second line. You can
vary the 110% to suit your needs, but 110% is perfect for me. Be sure
to heed the warning about not removing the @namespace line.

Thanks! Works fine. My .css file is growing.

I wonder if these .css tweaks of the SeaMonkey GUI are all available in a
list somewhere? Or is it just hand-me-down, one-at-a-time info? I know
nothing about .css but can play monkey-see, monkey-do... :)

I asked the same question yesterday in a different thread and a bit
differently. I asked if there is a user-oriented document on tweaking
userChrome.css and userChrome.css. The answer is No.

You might try unenabling reenabling. Check in about:config enter
java in the filter. You should have:
security.enable_java;true
Also in the same, check to see what the library name is etc. Example:
java.java_plugin_library_name;javaplugin_oji

You should see the background color in the rectangle under Sample

should see the number after Brightness change as you move the slider

You select different radio buttons to see color changes for text, links,

I'm not getting any problem. However, I recall that I had to reset the

At this point, considering the complications in shipping a 2.2.1 to mac

these issues.

2.3b1 will hopefully be out soon, and we plan to direct 10.7 SeaMonkey

that is as we choose.

We are not precluding the choice to build from source yourself with

I'm not getting any problem. However, I recall that I had to reset the

1. On the menu bar, go to [Edit Preferences].

5. Make sure the checkbox for Browser is checked. You might also want

The only two checkboxes that I have checked are:
Change status bar text
Change images

However, none of the checkboxes on the Scripts Plugins pane --

have any connection to Java. Java and JavaScript are two completely

On the SeaMonkey menu bar, go to [Help About Plugins]. On the

version number do you see? I have 6.0.260.3, but that's for Windows XP.
You apparently are using a MAC. The Java download site says: Apple

Yes, that happens by using the path you mentioned too: I still cannot

Also using the drop down list above the Domain list gives you several
 options.

I have tried that. If I select Passwords only, for instance, I get
*no* domains listed at all.

It looks like the same size text is used on the Tab Bar, Menu Bar. and in

the Tab Bar needs better legibility (a bigger font). It would be OK with

Is there any way?

Thanks.

Here are ways to adjust text size:

1. Start/Settings/Control/Personalization/Adjust Font Size

2. Start/Settings/Control/Personalization/Display Settings

3. Start/Settings/Control/Personalization/Window Color and
Appearance/Advanced. Then try adjusting Message Box and Menu fonts to
larger and possibly different fonts.

4. In SeaMonkey, Edit/Preferences/Appearance/Fonts. Then make size column
values 16, 16, 18. You might also want to change some of fonts
(experiment with them).

Thanks. That did it. It has been years since I played around with those
settings and I did myself some real good. My old eyes thank you!

FYI:
the SeaMonkey font settings don't affect the font size used on the tabs.
That is controlled by windows Message Box. In my Windows XP the path is:
rightclick Desktop Properties Appearance Advanced Message Box

Note: the height of the tabs in SeaMonkey is still a bit less than Firefox.
If you go to View-Zoom-120% everything looks good, but every time you go
to a new page it goes small again. I don't see a way to make zoom-120%
the default.

And yes, I do know what a master password is for. But I don't save
important passwords in Seamonkey, only the ones for non-vital stuff. The

SM 2.2 and Extensions

2011-07-10 Thread David E. Ross
I just installed SM 2.2 and found more extensions broken merely by the
version number. With four profiles and four broken extensions in each,
it took me about an hour to tweak them all.

Part of the problem is that Add-ons Manager apparent no longer allows a
generic declaration in install.rdf for the application to which the
extension can be installed. Instead, a specific declaration is required
for each application, which must be identified by a hex code number
(92650c4d-4b8e-4d2a-b7eb-24ecf4f6b63a for SeaMonkey). Also, in some
cases, it seems that Add-ons Manager no longer allows * as a wild-card
in the minimum and maximum version numbers.

If I have to do this again 6-8 times a year, forget it!

By the way, I did not tweak DOM Inspector. Version 2.0.10pre is not
compatible with SM 2.2. Unless someone can convince me I need it or can
provide an OFFICIAL version that is compatible, I will delete it by this
time next week.

It allows it (generic declaration) but AMO does not, so most extension
authors don't use it. AND if there is an app-specific declaration the
Addons Manager uses that and NOT the generic descriptor, Also the
auto-bumping code doesn't use that at all. (at least from AMO side)

If I have to do this again 6-8 times a year, forget it!

We have plans to try and get the auto-compat-bump from firefox
implemented for us too, its just a matter of finding human time for
someone from the Firefox team to tell us details, and find out where we
have to *do* this etc. (do we need to use our machines, can we use
theirs, what do they need from us or us from them, etc.)

Official version is on AMO, and will be ready (approved) probably no
later than tomorrow. the one we ship *is* compatible, but unfortunately
its not checked as we check against AMO if the internally shipped
version is the same (and thats all core code).

That said, if you don't use it you can safely uninstall/disable it.
