On this machine, yes; on the work machine, no. Since I am the sole user
on both machines (both on Win XP) and do not keep anything personal
(banking, financial, medical, etc) or embarrassing (porn, etc), on
either machine I have no need for any local passwords of any type except
those needed for accessing mail, newsgroups, and sites like Yahoo.

Software security Master Password

2009-10-31 Thread HilsB

First thanks to all for a great upgrade to SM2.
I'm on a MAC intel and downloaded / installed SM2 which replaced
1.1.18. SM2 would not recognise Master Password from 1.1.18. but
would allow a new Master Password but would delete all held
p'words etc.. Hmmm!
Redownloaded 1.1.18 and, using password accessed all 'old'
p'words etc.. Screen grab and took hard copy as backup. Inserted
new password into SM2 and visited critical sites to register
p'words from hard copy. So far so good.
Now at each startup of SM2 'Master password required for Software
security device' - no other passwords required after registering
1.1.18's mail / newsgroup passwords.
My question - how to stop SM2 startup 'Master Password Required'

It's just as annoying on Snow Leopard, trust me! WHAT Software Security
Device? Didn't have one before, don't want one now. Baloney.
I've gone back to 1.1.18 and unless and until they change that or come up with
a solution, I'm staying right there.

An additional complaint: moving to 2.0 didn't bring all my mail folder
contents over with it. Roughly 1/3 showed up. All the folders did, but not all
the content. I didn't bother to check out the browser side of things; no need
at that point.

I just checked my Preferences on 1.1.18, and I must have set one, a long time

asked to deal with any Software Security Device. Must be new with 2.0.

In in your profile directory/folder, locate the user.js file. If there
is no such file, open an ASCII text editor (e.g., Notepad on Windows) to
create it.

In user.js enter the following:

user_pref(signon.startup.prompt, false);
// don't ask for master password until it's used, bug #338549

Note that the semi-colon (;) at the end of the first line is mandatory.
The second line is merely a comment to remind you why you did this.

For this to be effective, you must terminate SeaMonkey completely and
then restart it.

If you still know the Master Password you can disable it in Preferences,
Privacy Security, Master Password, Change Password by typing the
current Master Password into the first field and clicking OK (leaving
the other two fields blank). If you don't remember it you cannot access
the saved passwords anyway so you can click Reset Password in the

The alternative (changing a preference as described in the other

While this certainly works I recommend to instead just go to
about:config, search for signon.startup.prompt and double-click the line
that will appear as a result. This is not only faster and less
error-prone but also clearer since your method overwrites whatever you
change in about:config after you restart SM.

This is a known bug and is easily worked around by following the

Simply type about:config in the URL bar to find the Config page.

All of my passwords - including my Master - transferred and worked on my
install on my MacBook Pro with 10.6.1. I have yet to update my other

and if I encounter issues during other upgrades I'll just copy the

Is this the workaround in question?

Workaround: If a Master Password is set and you saved your login
credentials, only one prompt will appear at startup. You can disable
this new behavior by setting signon.startup.prompt to false in about:config.

If so, open the browser and type about:config into the location bar.
Click through the warranty warning.

In the filter field, type signon.startup.prompt. The pref will appear.
Right click or Control click on it, and click Toggle, to set it to false.

First thanks to all for a great upgrade to SM2.

I agree :)

[cut]

Now at each startup of SM2 'Master password required for Software
security device' - no other passwords required after registering
1.1.18's mail / newsgroup passwords.
My question - how to stop SM2 startup 'Master Password Required' at
each
startup.

The same here on OSX Tiger, it's a bit annoying.

Gabriele

for Mac only:

SeaMonkey Menu Preferences Privacy Security Master password
choose The first time its needed.

Thanks for reply Philip -
Checked that out a while ago. It doesn't work for me.
Any other ideas - maybe it is a genuine bug.

Yes - it is a bug:

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.0/#issues

It can be fixed, this fix worked for me.

Thanks Rufus
I've looked at the quoted report a few times but I don't have the
know-how to access the file on this Mac. Any help appreciated.

Is this the workaround in question?

Workaround: If a Master Password is set and you saved your login
credentials, only one prompt will appear at startup. You can disable
this new behavior by setting signon.startup.prompt to false in
about:config.

If so, open the browser and type about:config into the location bar.
Click through the warranty warning.

In the filter field, type signon.startup.prompt. The pref will appear.
Right click or Control click on it, and click Toggle, to set it to false.

That's it! Except that I didn't use the filter, I just scrolled down
until I found it - using the filter is quicker. Worked for me.

If you have a Master Password set, it will also ask for it to
authenticate before allowing display of the config page.

In in your profile directory/folder, locate the user.js file. If there

In user.js enter the following:

user_pref(signon.startup.prompt, false);
// don't ask for master password until it's used, bug #338549

Note that the semi-colon (;) at the end of the first line is mandatory.
The second line is merely a comment to remind you why you did this.

For this to be effective, you must terminate SeaMonkey completely and
then restart it.

While this certainly works I recommend to instead just go to
about:config, search for signon.startup.prompt and double-click the line
that will appear as a result. This is not only faster and less
error-prone but also clearer since your method overwrites whatever you
change in about:config after you restart SM.

Greetings,

Jens

Jens thanks for the info. followed your suggestion to
'about.config' double clicked to 'false' and restarted.

This just pushed the passwords input request to the opened SM.

Now set the pref to ask only the first time it's needed.

I have noted that on occasion SM still will ask for the Master seemingly
at random once SM is open - even without bringing up Mail and NGs, or
needing to ask permission to save a new password. That may or may not
be a known issue, 1.1.18 did the same.
