Yeah, I had a look around too. Apparently they are deliberately holding
on IMAP in order to push for their proprietary DeltaSync protocol.

But I remembered I have an old Hotmail account I no longer use. I
checked it -- yeah, it is still active. So I tried to set it up in
Seamonkey according to these instructions:

http://www.liveside.net/2009/03/13/pop3-technology-has-now-rolled-out-to-hotmail-customers-worldwide/

...but actually, I just followed the SM new-account wizard and filled in
the blanks. Turns out it download the messages with no problems using
the default POP3 port 110, with no encryption. (Although that might have
been my antivirus, Avast -- there's a gateway to live.com on port 995
that I don't remember setting up, so it might be that it auto-configures
these gateways for known services, so I might be using SSL on port 995
without knowing it.)

Manually changing the options for Connection Security SSL/TLS (port 995)
didn't seem to cause any problems. I also set up SMTP on port 587 (with
STARTTLS) and it worked fine, except for a message telling me to log on
and do a CAPTCHA -- which I wasn't able to find. Now I remember why I
never liked Hotmail...

i did get ae...@live.com to download mail once or twice into seamonkey,
but they want more frequent checkins to their webmail portal apparently...

thanks for taking time to poke around MC... i never used to like
hotmail... and i've never used it previosly... but thought i'd give the
new windowslive features a look see...

2012-02-11 Thread sean nathan bean

does anyone have this working in SeaMonkey?

these are what Microsoft says should work:

pop3.live.com - 995 ssl
smtp.live.com - 587 start/tls

but it never does...

Do you have a Hotmail account that is actually eligible for POP access? I
seem to remember that the free accounts were changed, oh a decade ago, to
webmail access only -- unless you upgraded to a fee-based account.

I don't have a Hotmail account, but I have noticed that webmail
providers have been quietly allowing IMAP access in order to be usable
by smartphone/tablet users. For instance, both Yahoo and Mail.com, which
used to allow POP/IMAP access only for premium users, now allow free
IMAP -- but sometimes, not POP -- access.

So, I would try IMAP before POP.

i was casting about for a new e'mail address and thought i'd see how
windows live was working w/in Seamonkey... encouraged by this article
dated 2009...

http://www.ghacks.net/2009/03/14/hotmail-pop3-configuration/

which says its available to anyone...

i've had it work for a few days at a time... but it always begins
throwing up errors after three days or so...

its no biggie, just wondered if i was the only one scratching my head...

freepops is not an addon to SM, but a separate program that must be run
along side SM to access various mail providers.

i have it run automatically via the startup folder when windows starts,
and i sometimes even forget that it's running.

if you are still encountering a problem, i'd check it out and see if may
work for you as well.
