recording of works by Nick and Tony Bicât, so will miss it. Impressed with what

Actually, if we’re talking about the track I used in the demo, it should indeed 
be Voodoo Chile, as that’s how it’s spelled on the UK release of Electric 
Ladyland. Actually, on the album, it’s Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) and it does 
need to be that track, as opposed to the longer Voodoo Child. I first 
experimented with it on a sampler called Blues News, which I bought in Germany 
and which I still have, which was pressed in white vinyl and which lists the 
track simply as Voodoo Chile. The same Wikipedia entry that Bruce referenced 
has the details of where the confusion arose.

So no need for apologies, Bruce, you were right the first time.

[Sursound] Twirling 720 Microphone

Mine (pre-ordered for some small amount) arrived a couple of days ago and I’ve 
got it hooked up to my MacBook via a suitable USB adapter and an old Apple 
keyboard extension cable. At first, I couldn't get a sensible signal out of it, 
but then discovered that it needs to be connected via USB3, or it won’t work. 
Then I took a look at the capsule orientation, which, although it is indeed a 
tetrahedral array, seems to be skewed by 45º off centre, but as the output is 
encoded in some way into two channels, this may not be a problem. By using 
their 720 Studio app, I can get a sort-of surround signal out of it, although 
it appears to have no vertical information. The skimpy on-line manual is pretty 
useless for Mac users, so I wonder in anyone else has had better or more 
consistent results?

Not arguing with the figures, just stating empirical findings. 

Will see if I can find details of the two machines at some point. Ditched one 
manufacturer because of poor quality control, so may just have been unlucky.

SurroundZone2 is not too bad, either. Not quite as versatile as Harpex, but a 
definite upgrade on version 1, and you can't argue with the price. As to the Mk 
2 mic, I did enquire about the cost of upgrading the existing ST450 control 
unit, but was quoted just under £2,000.00 exc. VAT, which is too rich for my 
blood, so I'll stick with the original box for few more years.

[Sursound] Soundfield Repairs via RØDE

For those of you who aren’t part of the various surround Facebook groups where 
I’ve already posted this, and who might have been frustrated by the lack of 
information on how to get your Soundfield microphones serviced, thanks to an 
introduction via Tony Faulkner, I’ve been able to make contact with the 
appropriate people at RØDE and make a couple of suggestions. 

They now have a link on their Soundfield.com website that gives some detail as 
to how to go about it. Tell your friends.

Just a note about the HMRC import charges rip-off: someone looks at the 
declared insurance value of the microphone and charges VAT on that, plus a 
handling charge. You have to spend time on the phone explaining that to the 
drones who answer and then ask for the matter to be escalated to a supervisor. 
If there was a charge for the repair, then that should show up on the invoice, 
but as I think it’s unlikely that Len charged you over £500 for the repair, the 
added VAT should be minimal. This happens all the time with kit sent overseas 
for repair and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to call the 
courier company and go through the process of explaining that there’s been no 
added value to an under-warranty repair, so no VAT is applicable. Of course, 
this will only get worse following Brexit, with companies like Sound Devices 
requiring that you send your recorder to Germany for repair.

Also, if you’re paying £85 to ship to the US, you’re being massively 
overcharged again: go online to somewhere like Parcels2Go and you should be 
able to get UPS or equivalent express service to the USA, with insurance and 
guaranteed delivery for under £50.

Finally, if you do decide to send the mic back, you’re welcome to borrow my 
TetraMic until such time as yours is returned.

[Sursound] OctaThingy .stl Files

Hello chaps,

As all my work has now been cancelled, thanks to Covid-19, I have time on my 
hands and a new 3D printer to play with. I’d like to experiment with building a 
couple of the SpHEAR microphones, but I can’t seem to work out how to download 
the SCAD files so that I convert them to .STL format. 

Has anyone done this? Got the files to share? Any info gratefully received.

Even worse for connections, though: 4 XLRs and 4 TA3s - I had a six-way version 
made up for my 788 when I had a DPA 5001which was rather nice, but not cheap. 
Those multi-pin Lemo connectors are expensive. 

But if you’re going for the Schoeps set up, what’s a  couple of thousand bucks 
or so extra on top for the recorder and breakout? I’m sure someone will do you 
a really good deal on a package. I think you’re in the UK, so try the nice 
people at Pink Noise, SoundKit or Everything Audio, or the BBList for a used 
recorder: there are a ton of them around at the moment as everyone is either 
upgrading in the hope of attracting work when it comes back, or selling up 
because they can’t afford to keep waiting for the work to come back. SD 788s 
are often available used at reasonable prices. Or you could go for the Zoom F8, 
which is inexpensive and seems to have many good reports. I’m using a MixPre 
10Tii with my OctoMic and am pretty happy with it.

The SD 788 can indeed link all eight channels, and a lot of other variations as 
well, except for one which I sometimes need - two sets of M/S linking. Still, 
can’t have everything.
