[biofuel] Re: Jet Fuel

2004-07-06 Thread bluefxstc

Jet fuel will work fine in a normal diesel. Jet A has a lower
energy content than D2 so you mileage will go down some but if it is
free what is the big deal. It also has a lower lubrication quality
(not sure what the right term for this is) so mixing with BD would
be good. The military currently runs Jet fuel in most of there
diesel trucks and ships. It is easier logistically to just have one
fuel that takes care of everything instead of having to supply many
different fuels for the fleet.

Hi all,
A local airport often has wast jet fuel. My understanding
is
that with a lubricity additive, jet fuel can be used as
diesel. I
 can
get 30-40 gallons a week. Anyone doing this?

[biofuel] ANyone along I-80 want to buy a biodiesel processor?

2004-07-06 Thread girl mark

Hello,

I'm traveling across country this month, 'by accident'- I really didn't
intend to take this trip!, and I'll be going from DC to Maine and then back
to California, taking Interstate 80 back. My partner and I are driving a
couple of vans back here which he and another friend had purchased on eBay
(it's a bit difficult to find a cheap diesel van in California these days),
and I got drafted to help get one of the vehicles running.

ANyway, this July trip is somewhat of an accident, and cuts into my
planning for my 'real' biodiesel class tour at the end of the summer/fall
(details coming up shortly). In my quest to fund the fall class tour, and
since I'll be missing work to do this July thing, I'm once again offering
to build biodiesel processors for people along the route of my trip (same
offer applies to my travels in the fall):

The processors would be the water heater-based Biodiesel Appleseed reactors
from www.veggieavenger.com/media , which in general I encourage you all to
build yourselves (it's easy).

However if you want a processor built for you, and you are 'along the way'
of the route of my July trip, I'll build you one for the cost of parts and
$200 for labor, which will go into funding my August-November biodiesel
class tour (ie taking my own vehicle, a reactor and a bunch of other gear
on the road from August through November and teaching classes).

The total cost for these units including my labor charge is either $380
or $580 depending on whether you can find a free used electric water heater
or whether you have to buy a brand new one (they're about $200 usually). If
you can find a closed-head barrel somewhere, I'll throw in a wash tank for
the same cost.

I'll be putting together a list of the fall classes tonight and emailing it
out. Some of those class dates are also for 'equipment building' classes,
which are opportunities for participants to build their own reactor.

[biofuel] Getiing rid of the water in oil and alcohol (just a thought)

2004-07-06 Thread Teoman Naskali

Its just a silly thought but, would it be possible to
use electrolyse to get rid of the water in the oil?
And more unlikely, could I use electrolyse to get rid
of the water in my methanol?? Or would i be
electrolysing the oil and alcohol? If so what comes
out of the electrolyse?

Electrolyse could be a cheaper form of dehydrating oil
and water if u get the power from solar or wind
energy.

+ About the icy ball, can one be asily constructed? At
home i have a 1m parabolic mirror that i use to heat
tea. Coule i build such a system for solar
airconditionning? THat would be just great!

Thanks for your time everybody
And sorry if none of my ideas make any sense. But hey
you never know, maby it might inspire somebody else.

[biofuel] My Methanol

2004-07-06 Thread Teoman Naskali

I just received the methanol that i had ordered.
the ayre in 10 liter containers and the label says

Metanol
CH3OH
1l = 0,80kg
MW = 32,04

what does the las thing indicate? And do I have any
way of figuring out if this stuff is good. Of course i
will do a test batch in a couple of hours.

Some time back i remember vaguely reading somewhere
that acetone was added to the gas tank to get rid of
water in the gas tank. Would that be any use to us?

Re: [biofuel] My Methanol

2004-07-06 Thread Rob

chemical properties of Methanol

mw is Molecular weight: 32.042 kg/kmol

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF METHANOL: CH3OH

ÊAlso called METHYL ALCOHOL, it is the simplest of a long series of
organic compounds called alcohols; its molecular formula is CH3OH.
Methanol was formerly produced by the destructive distillation of wood.
The modern method of preparing methanol is based on the direct
combination of carbon monoxide gas and hydrogen in the presence of a
catalyst. Most methanol is produced from the methane which is found in
natural gas.

Pure methanol is an important material in chemical synthesis. Its
derivatives are used in great quantities for building up a vast number
of compounds, among them many important synthetic dyestuffs, resins,
drugs, and perfumes. Large quantities are converted to dimethylaniline
for dyestuffs and to formaldehyde for synthetic resins. It is also used
in automotive antifreezes, in rocket fuels, and as a general solvent.
Methanol is also a high-octane, clean-burning fuel that is a
potentially important substitute for gasoline in automotive vehicles.

Methanol is a colorless liquid, completely miscible with water and
organic solvents and is very hydroscopic. It boils at 64.96¡ C (148.93¡
F) and solidifies at -93.9¡ C (-137¡ F). It forms explosive mixtures
with air and burns with a nonluminous flame. It is a violent poison;
drinking mixtures containing methanol has caused many cases of
blindness or death. Methanol has a settled odor. Methanol is a potent
nerve poison. Key physical properties are:

Melting Point : -97.7 0C

  Boiling Point : 65 0C

MANUFACTURE OF METHANOL: CH3OH

Most of world methanol is manufactured from natural gas by a steam
reforming process. Methane of natural gas is first mixed with steam at
3/1 ratio. It is then reformed to carbon oxides and hydrogen under
nickel catalyst at 1000¡C and 20 Atm. Carbon oxides and hydrogen reacts
exothermically at about 70 Atm pressure in the gas phase to form mainly
methanol and water mixture. These reactions take place in the presence
of Cu, Al and Zn based catalyst. Crude methanol is cooled and condensed
and fed through a distillation process to achieve 99.9 Mole% product
purity. The process is highly integrated. It uses the state-of-the art
technologies to achieve low capital cost and higher conversion
efficiency.

As an alternative, partial oxidation or oxygen aided processes are also
used.

Methanol production economics are highly depended on the feedstock
selection and feedstock prices. Methanol can be manufactured from any
hydrocarbon source; naphtha, oil, coal, wood, bio-mass, LPG, etc. The
naphtha, fraction of crude oil distillation, is used as a raw material
in many older facilities for the manufacture of methanol. When naphtha
is reacted with a high steam ratio, under pressure and at high
temperature, synthesis gas of low methane content is obtained. Most of
the carbon from the naphtha is converted to carbon monoxide and carbon
dioxide:
   1000 ¡ C
 CH4+H2O   === CO  +   3H2
   Carbon Hydrogen
   Monoxide

 CO+ H2O   === CO2  +   H2
 Carbon Hydrogen
 Dioxide

The mixture of hydrogen and carbon oxides is compressed and is passed
over a catalyst under high pressure and at high temperature, methanol
is formed.

  400 ¡ C
 CO  +   2H2 === CH3OH
 Methanol

 CO2 +   3H2 === CH3OH  + H2O
 Methanol

The mixture of methanol, water, other impurities is distilled to
produce 99.95 Mole% methanol product purity.

This topic was discussed at length on the organic building list a few years
ago. The people who had installed the systems found they had problems with
mold and mildew entering the home from the pipes.

Using the same principles, but using hydronics to heat and cool rather than
an air system seems to avoid the problems.

[biofuel] My FIrst Batch

2004-07-06 Thread Teoman Naskali

My first batch looks like it is fairly successfull, I
found an old scale purely mechanical. With which i
managed to measure the NaOH.

I mixed it with the methanol in a jar, it took about
25 mins to mix, and in the end result one could almost
see very very tiny particles floating.

I heated the oil (corn oil) in a jar which i placed in
a pan filled with water. I kept the heat constant
between 55 and 60 degrees.

Then i slowly added the methanol with lye. I kept it
at constant temperature for about three hours and i
gave it a good shake every half an hour.
Can you ruin it by overstirring? Or can i recover it
if the reaction has not compleeted because of
insufficient stirring?

It has been settling for about two hours now. There is
some brownish reddis stuff at the bottom, some yellow
liquid which i hope is biodiesel and a very thin again
reddish brownish layer on top. Tthe biodiesel is not
too clear. Does this sound ok? Or have i goofed?

HOw can i check if my methanol is good?
And if i wash it is this stuff good enough to pour in
to my car?

I must say i am excited, what is the next step?

thanks,
Teoman

[biofuel] Methanol

2004-07-06 Thread Chris McKay

Hi there!

I'm new to the list and I thought I'd drop a line and say hi to everyone!

I live in Kitimat BC, and coincidentally I work at Methanex, the world's
largest producer of methanol. We also make ammonia at our plant here from the
purge (excess) hydrogen from the methanol plant. I worked at the plant in
Medicine Hat, Alberta, and then I got transferred to Kitimat when the other
plant shut down.

So, needless to say I won't have any problem finding a bit of methanol (for
well under $2 a litre!!). If anyone has any questions about how it's made (I
saw the post about it just now from Rob and Teoman), just drop me a line.
Also, since I have an ingrained safety ethic from where I work, if anyone needs
any MSDS's (material safety data sheets) for methanol, or ANY chemical for that
matter, just let me know. Part of having these chemicals, especially around
the house, is that you (and everyone using them) know everything you can about
them, and have the information available. Label all of your chemicals (not
just with the name...also include the hazard symbols or words) and have the
sheets in a binder (labelled) nearby!! You are liable if someone stops in and
decides to have a drink of your unlabelled methanol!

On that thought, I must just go ahead and post them anyways in a couple of days.

So, hello again and talk to you soon!

[biofuel] Oil faces new threats

2004-07-06 Thread MH

Published on Monday, July 5, 2004 by The Daily Star

Don't blame the Arabs: Oil faces new threats beyond the Gulf
 by Ed Blanche
 http://www.energybulletin.net/newswire.php?id=906

Ed Blanche, a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in
London,
is a Beirut-based journalist who has covered Middle Eastern affairs for three
decades.
He is a regular contributor to THE DAILY STAR.

BEIRUT: The United States' drive for energy security, one of the dominant
elements
in its tough-guy foreign policy, is running into trouble around the globe,
making
US control of Iraq's oil wealth ever more necessary. And that is sure to stir
up
more trouble, unsettling a market that has become volatile and unpredictable.

In an effort to reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil, the Americans have
been
encouraging the quest for new sources of oil and gas for some time, but this
has
often led oilmen into regions that were unstable, or are made so by their
presence
and the greed their product instills among the political elites. These days,
the
New York Times commented recently, the discovery of oil is itself almost a
 guarantee of conflict.

In short, the world's main oil-producing regions are becoming political
quagmires
that threaten global supply, and this is likely to keep oil prices high for
some
considerable time no matter what happens in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Major
convulsions
in those countries, which seem unavoidable, will only worsen an already bad
situation.

The violence in Iraq and Saudi Arabia has kept the concerns of oil-importing
countries
like the US focused on the Middle East. But in recent months there have been
internal
problems in key oil producers like Venezuela, Nigeria and Norway that have
either reduced
oil production or threaten to do so. None of this will bring any comfort to
the Middle East.

With production by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries stretched
and
global oil demand expected to keep rising due to strong economic growth in
industrialized
countries and population giants China and India, a major disruption by a top
producer such as
Venezuela, the world's fifth largest exporter with the western hemisphere's
largest reserves,
 could trigger a global crisis.

 (SNIP)

The ruling elites in several of the Central Asian states sitting on these vast
deposits of
oil and gas are as totalitarian as the Soviets who were their masters until
the collapse of
communism nearly 15 years ago. Political upheaval could erupt in the
not-too-distant future as
these elites, enriched by the oil profits and courted by the US for their
energy resources and
their strategic military value, establish dynasties through which they will
maintain their grip on power.

Islamic extremists fighting the Russians in nearby Chechnya could find the
pipeline a
tempting target. As it is, the Caspian region lacks investment and suffers
serious export
bottlenecks, so it cannot be counted on to compensate for any loss in
production in Iraq,
 Saudi Arabia or anywhere else.

Georgia could also be a collision point between Russia and the US, which
backed the
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline as a way to cut into Moscow's traditional
monopoly of
Caspian energy resources. The Russians, alarmed at US encroachment into
Central Asia,
especially since Sept. 11, 2001, are now making determined efforts to recover
their
influence - along with access to Caspian oil and to military bases - in the
former
Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan. The
Americans
cannot afford to have Georgia plunged into turmoil again.

In recent weeks there have been coup attempts in Sao Tome, Equatorial Guinea,
Chad and
Mauritania in West Africa, a region which is expected within five years to be
producing
15 percent of the United States' oil imports. The oilfields, mainly offshore
in the
Atlantic Ocean, can supply oil to the US East Coast far faster than the Gulf -
10 days
against up to two months - which gives them added strategic value.

But the oil wealth that US and European oil companies are racing to develop in
the region
seems to be the cause of a chain reaction of unrest as political rivals
squabble over the
riches that are suddenly descending on these countries, some of the poorest in
the world,
and in several cases ruled by dictators just as brutal in their way as Saddam
Hussein.
These, too, are now supported by the US.

(SNIP)

The union problems remain unresolved and more trouble probably lies ahead for
Norway,
the world's third biggest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia and Russia. It pumps
200 million cubic meters of gas per day to continental Europe and Britain.

Russia, which now rivals Saudi Arabia as the world's top producer, can no
longer
pick up any slack in global output. Its crude oil exports have hit a ceiling
after
several years of growth and Moscow cannot raise shipments unless new

Re: [biofuel] Methanol

2004-07-06 Thread Keith Addison

Hi Chris, welcome

Hi there!

I'm new to the list and I thought I'd drop a line and say hi to everyone!

I live in Kitimat BC, and coincidentally I work at Methanex, the
world's largest producer of methanol. We also make ammonia at our

about how it's made (I saw the post about it just now from Rob and
Teoman), just drop me a line.

Make it onlist rather? Then it'll be in the archives for everyone's
use, now and later.

Of much interest, for a long time, has been the possibility of
feasible small-scale methods (down to backyard-level) of making your
own methanol from renewable resources. You can see why that's
interesting. I think anything about methanol is of general interest
here.

Here are some previous messages on this:
http://infoarchive.net/sgroup/BIOFUEL/29796/
http://infoarchive.net/sgroup/BIOFUEL/30149/

There's also this:

Lots more in the archives.

Also, since I have an ingrained safety ethic from where I work, if

or ANY chemical for that matter, just let me know. Part of having

Indeed yes.

Label all of your chemicals (not just with the name...also include
the hazard symbols or words) and have the sheets in a binder
(labelled) nearby!!

Yes! And running water to hand, closed processors, safe electrical
connections... and some common sense, respect, no sloppiness.

You are liable if someone stops in and decides to have a drink of
your unlabelled methanol!

On that thought, I must just go ahead and post them anyways in a
couple of days.

Good! Thankyou, please do. We're aware of how much damage an accident
can do to the biofuels movement, though we try to keep it in
perspective too - some people overreact and back right off because of
an unreasonable fear of all those horrible chemicals. All due care
and precaution, good safe practices and equipment, good information
on the hazards, but no need for paranoia either. We have made a lot
of progress with safety issues over the last few years, it's MUCH
safer now, in every way.

Best wishes

Keith

Re: [biofuel] Double Batching

2004-07-06 Thread Keith Addison

G'day L

G'day;

Having pretty much completed my processor and also having found a
nice home for it, I have a question for those in the know.
I am set up for a single batch lot or with a spare drum I can send
tghe finished process to a settling tank and straight away fire up
another one. The question is, can I pop one batch on top of the
first one even though it may be a couple hours (2-3) between
processing the first batch and the second and just have them settle
together until I am ready to sent them together to the wash tank?
My batches can either be 100 liter sigle or 80 liter when doubled.
The wash tank determining the size of double batching. (160 liters
plus water in the wash tank is going to about top it off I think).
Do I still bubble 4-5 hours, change water and then wash twice more
10 hours each, or do I have to make the wash longer due to increased
volume? Ok, that's two questions.

So you want half-price or what? :-)

I'm not sure I grok your numbers aright - hey, that reminds me, you
STILL didn't get that other one right! Sheesh! How much lye per litre
of methanol, remember? (Or was it hogsheads?) He'd asked the wrong
question anyway. Have to go back and dig it up...

Anyway, numbers permitting, I see no reason you can't dump one batch
on top of another one, then they'll both have settled out together
the next day and proceed as if it's a single batch.

That said, if one of the batches is good and the other's iffy,
different oil or different something or other, you're perhaps going
to be a little hard put to find out just what went wrong and where
and why once they're all mixed up.

With that in mind, it might be an idea to do small-size test-batches
in parallel with each batch, at least at first until you get the hang
of doing it that way.

You're going to wash 160 litres in a 200-litre tank? Needs some
headroom too, doesn't leave much space for the water. Try it and see,
maybe it'll be worth it even if it takes more washes and more time.
Or make somewhat smaller batches.

Thanks for any input.

HIH.

Best

Keith

Hi all

Please can you advise if caustic soda pearls (sold as drain cleaner) at
98% are sufficient or if i must order 99%+ which is a lot more expensive.

thanks

Ben

Hi Ben

I think that'll be just fine. Try small test-batches first, as ever.
Make sure to keep the stuff dry, close the lid quickly and tight,
even transfer and weigh it out it inside plastic bags if the
weather's very wet. Make sure too that it's still dry in the first
place when you buy it. If all the pearls are stuck together in a lump
there's been a moisture leak. It'll still work as drain cleaner but
not so well with biodiesel (though you could probably just use more
of it, if you adjust the proportions in an organised sort of way).

Best wishes

Keith
