Hi all, Some of you may be interested in this development. Charring Peanut Shells for Hydrogen Fuel Washington - Donald C. Reicosky, an Agricultural Research Service soil scientist at the North Central Soil Conservation Research Laboratory in Morris, Minn., has teamed up with an inventor of a patent-pending process to turn agricultural biomass--wastes like peanut shells--into hydrogen fuel and charcoal fertilizer. The inventor, Danny Day, president of Eprida, Inc., a technology and development company in Athens, Ga., has also joined forces with U.S. Department of Energy scientists who hold a patent on a related technology. Volatiles and steam released by charring biomass produce hydrogen. The charring turns the biomass into charcoal pieces. This charcoal becomes a nitrogen-enriched fertilizer with the addition of ammonia formed by combining a third of the hydrogen with nitrogen. The remaining hydrogen can be sold as fuel, both for a hydrogen-based, clean diesel and to run fuel cells. This morning, at the American Chemical Society's 228th national meeting, in Philadelphia, Pa., Day made a presentation on the fuel production. Tomorrow, he will discuss the charcoal's fertilizer value. The porous charcoal potentially gives soil microbes an improved environment for nutrient cycling. That would be the mother of all national security issues. By David Stipp Global warming may be bad news for future generations, but let's face it, most of us spend as little time worrying about it as we did about al Qaeda before 9/11. Like the terrorists, though, the seemingly remote climate risk may hit home sooner and harder than we ever imagined. In fact, the prospect has become so real that the Pentagon's strategic planners are grappling with it. The threat that has riveted their attention is this: Global warming, rather than causing gradual, centuries-spanning change, may be pushing the climate to a tipping point. Growing evidence suggests the ocean-atmosphere system that controls the world's climate can lurch from one state to another in less than a decade like a canoe that's gradually tilted until suddenly it flips over. Scientists don't know how close the system is to a critical threshold. But abrupt climate change may well occur in the not-too-distant future. If it does, the need to rapidly adapt may overwhelm many societies thereby upsetting the geopolitical balance of power. Though triggered by warming, such change would probably cause cooling in the Northern Hemisphere, leading to longer, harsher winters in much of the U.S. and Europe. AFRL's Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Airbase Technologies Division, Weapons Systems Logistics Branch, Tyndall AFB FL Researchers at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate are developing a biological method of producing hydrogen from waste streams created by dining halls, kitchens, latrines, and other places at bare base facilities. When successful, researchers will demonstrate that hydrogen production from bare base waste streams is a feasible alternative energy source for fuel cells. Using hydrogen as an alternative energy source is an exciting option due to its high conversion efficiency and nonpolluting nature. Bare base facilities have as many as 1,100 military personnel who live in temporary housing. Their mission often requires the base to function for several years, with the host nation providing little or no services. Currently, MEP-12 diesel generators produce the electrical power needs of the base. Directorate researchers in the Weapons Systems Logistics Branch are currently developing a two-reactor hydrogen generation system that is expected to reduce logistical burdens, pollution, and noise associated with using current diesel energy generators for energy production.1 Hydrogen-driven fuel cells will lower diesel fuel consumption and minimize the use of fossil fuels for hydrogen production. Though hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth, it is bound to other elements from which it must be separated before it can be used in energy generation. Microorganisms exist containing enzymes that produce hydrogen from waste materials, providing a seemingly inexhaustible source of material for hydrogen production. Many anaerobic organisms can produce hydrogen from organic substances, converting carbohydrates in a fermentative process to organic acids and hydrogen. For example, researchers can convert glucose to two acetate molecules, releasing four hydrogen molecules. The refrigerator was developed by Milwaukee-based Astronautics Corporation of America as part of a cooperative research and development agreement with Ames Laboratory. Instead of ozone-depleting refrigerants and energy-consuming compressors found in conventional vapor-cycle refrigerators, this new style of refrigerator uses gadolinium metal that heats up when exposed to a magnetic field, then cools down when the magnetic field is removed. We're witnessing history in the making, Ames Laboratory senior metallurgist Karl Gschneidner Jr. says of the revolutionary device. Previous successful demonstration refrigerators used large superconducting magnets, but this is the first to use a permanent magnet and operate at room temperature. Initially tested in September at the Astronautics Corporation of America's Technology Center in Madison, Wis., the new refrigerator is undergoing further testing. The goal is to achieve larger temperature swings that will allow the technology to provide the cooling power required for specific markets, such as home refrigerators, air conditioning, electronics cooling, and fluid chilling. According to Gschneidner, who is also an Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of materials science and engineering at Iowa State University, the magnetic refrigerator employs a rotary design. It consists of a wheel that contains segments of gadolinium powder ö supplied by Ames Laboratory ö and a high-powered, rare earth permanent magnet. The wheel is arranged to pass through a gap in the magnet where the magnetic field is concentrated. As it passes through this field, the gadolinium in the wheel exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect ö it heats up. After the gadolinium enters the field, water is circulated to draw the heat out of the metal. As the material leaves the magnetic field, the material cools further as a result of the magnetocaloric effect. A second stream of water is then cooled by the gadolinium. This water is then circulated through the refrigerator's cooling coils. The overall result is a compact unit that runs virtually silent and nearly vibration free, without the use of ozone-depleting gases, a dramatic change from the vapor-compression-style refrigeration technology in use today. The permanent magnets and the gadolinium don't require any energy inputs to make them work, Gschneidner said, so the only energy it takes is the electricity for the motors to spin the wheel and drive the water pumps. Though the test further proves the technology works, two recent developments at Ames Laboratory could lead to even greater advances on the magnetic refrigeration frontier. Gschneidner and fellow Ames Laboratory researchers Sasha Pecharsky and Vitalij Pecharsky have developed a process for producing kilogram quantities of Gd5(Si2Ge2) alloy using commercial-grade gadolinium. Gd5(Si2Ge2) exhibits a giant magnetocaloric effect which offers the promise to outperform the gadolinium powders used in the current rotary refrigerator. When the alloy was first discovered in 1996, the process used high-purity gadolinium and resulted in small quantities (less than 50 grams). However, when lower-quality commercial-grade gadolinium was used, the magnetocaloric effect was only a fraction, due mainly to interstitial impurities, especially carbon. The new process overcomes the deleterious effect of these impurities, making it viable to use less expensive commercial-grade gadolinium to achieve roughly the same magnetocaloric effect as the original discovery. At the same time, Ames Lab researchers David Jiles and Seong-Jae Lee, along with Vitalij Pecharsky and Gschneidner, have designed a permanent magnet configuration capable of producing a stronger magnetic field. The new magnet can produce a magnetic field nearly twice as high as that produced by the magnet used in the initial refrigerator, an important advance since the output and efficiency of the

(AP) A University of Illinois research team is working on turning pig manure into a form of crude oil that could be refined to heat homes or generate electricity. Years of research and fine-tuning are ahead before the idea could be commercially viable, but results so far indicate there might be big benefits for farmers and consumers, lead researcher Yanhui Zhang said. ``This is making more sense in terms of alternative energy or renewable energy and strategically for reducing our dependency on foreign oil,'' said Zhang, an associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering. ``Definitely, there is potential in the long term.'' The thermochemical conversion process uses intense heat and pressure to break down the molecular structure of manure into oil. It's much like the natural process that turns organic matter into oil over centuries, but in the laboratory the process can take as little as a half-hour. A similar process is being used at a plant in Carthage, Mo., where tons of turkey entrails, feathers, fats and grease from a nearby Butterball turkey plant are converted into a light crude oil, said Julie DeYoung, a spokeswoman for Conagra Foods, which operates the plant in a joint venture with Long Island-based Changing World Technologies. But converting manure is sure to catch the attention of swine producers. Safe containment of livestock waste is costly for farmers, especially at large confinement operations where thousands of tons of manure are produced each year. Also, odors produced by swine farms have made them a nuisance to neighbors. ``If this ultimately becomes one of the silver bullets to help the industry, I'm absolutely in favor of it,'' said Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Pork Producers Association. Zhang and his research team have found that converting manure into crude oil is possible in small batches, but much more research is needed to develop a continuously operating reaction chamber that could handle large amounts of manure. That is key to making the process practicable and economically viable. Zhang predicted that one day a reactor the size of a home furnace could process the manure generated by 2,000 hogs at a cost of about $10 per barrel. In a best-case scenario, $1.5 billion in crude oil imports could be saved each year if 50 percent of the nation's swine farms used the technology, Zhang said. And he estimated the value of hogs would increase $10 to $15 each if the oil that their waste produces could be sold for $30 per barrel. Big oil refineries are unlikely to purchase crude oil made from converted manure, Zhang said, because they aren't set up to refine it.
