 Thanks Mano -

I had sent a note to the list many months ago envisioning
 an HF
Trailer but never had any volunteers...so we'd love to
 incorporate
your idea in the plans for 2012.

Not sure, given the reinforced concrete construction, if
 the wire
strung between balconies would be affected.

Thanks for the input - We'll put it in the idea jar -
 around
September / October I'll leave myself a reminder to follow
 up with you
 on this.

We tend to go dormant from a Fest planning perspective from
 April
through mid-September, because that's when schedules and
 plans try to
 firm up.

Yes, not having an antenna pretty much took the SW out
of the SWL Fest. If nothing else works, I am happy to set up
a HF listening trailer in the parking lot with a balloon
antenna or two. It will be warm with electricity, internet,
coffee and micro-brew. On the Sunday afternoon there could
be a trip to a nearby state park to setup a beverage antenna
for a more deeper listening session.

The balloon antenna idea or stringing a longwire
between the balconies in the hotel atrium are other viable
ideas to explore, if the  management will lets us...

Re: [Swlfest] [Internetradio] SIGINT CHATTER: Radio Moscow and the Cold War

2020-05-23 Thread Mano Guha
Thanks John for this nugget!

I saw their swank studios last in the NYC office tower (old city hall?) with
the golden statue on top. I used to work for NYCTV two floors above which
looked down on the new City Hall. Michael Bloomberg was the mayor then. WNYC
also shared transmitters with WNYE radio located atop the Empire State
Building, sometimes fed by an FM LPT in Brooklyn.

Alas, WYNE has been defunct for a while, with their old TV studios in Brooklyn,
not far from the iconic bridge. The haunted building was torn down and a high
rise in its place, with condos I believe :(

Brings back memories, mostly good, some bad.

Re: [Swlfest] Update to 34th Winter SWL Fest Schedule!

2021-02-24 Thread Mano Guha
Dear Festers,

2022 is too far away and I am not holding my breath. Like any professional
hobby group, these chats shud be weekly or bi-weekly, perhaps under the aegis
of NASWA? The regional clubs could also take turns hosting them with global
participation. With virtual meets we have a great opportunity to up our game a
bit :) We lament the demise to shortwave listening, but do little to make it
popular.

Besides the Flea Market, The Hospitality Room is the other thing I have come to
miss in my years of non-attendance. For my last event, the local liquor shop
pitched in with half a keg of Yuengling Lager, courtesy a neighbor who works in
the beverage industry. For some reason, YLL is cheaper in CT than in PA.

Anyways, my company specializes in enabling broadcast quality audio and video
streams, especially for the technologically and socially disadvantaged. So I am
more than happy to help out to anyone to cannot get on to the forums.

I am willing to pay the registration fee for SWLs, who don’t have access to
Paypal or cannot afford to, to do my own bit. The FestMeisters have been
generous in helping me out with registration fees in the past, so it is time I
returned the favor.

Cheers,
Mano

1. How about a hands on workshop on tinkering:
- renovating a Grunding Satellit 650 or Drake SPR4 or JRC NRD 525
- building effective antenna with household items aimed at apartment dwellers

2. A virtual flea market and not-so silent auction.

3. And finally firing up your own micro-watt FM transmitter and webstream,
inviting guest DJs to play your favorite music (John Peel style), in a
beer-laced (Yuengling Lager) BBQ!

I could present them with a collaborator from Europe. I did them last summer
when there was no Fest. I could thro in my visit to Radio Habana too.
