Re: [GTALUG] Any Debian User Groups in the GTA?

2018-09-06 Thread Bill Thanis via talk
There was a group of people that were interested in debian that came to
TLUG many years ago. I know that they met informally as well, but to my
knowledge the group fizzled out as people became busy. I can't remember
anyone who attended the informally meeting though.

Anyone admit to being part of this group?

I have heard of them happening. I have never been able to think of a
reason they would be that useful. I suppose that is also why they hold
DebConf every year or so. I had considered going to the one last year
in Montreal, but more important things got in the way unfortunately.

Hi Dee,

I'd suggest you subscribe to debian-u...@lists.debian.org. That's a very high
volume list for general help inquiries when you don't really know where the
problem lies. Be prepared to wade through lots of topics you not interested in

Well reportbug does support saving the report to a file that you can
then send from a machine that does have email access, but yes having
direct email sending ability makes it much easier to use.

https://lists.debian.org has them all. They have a general users list,
there are various developer lists, lists for each architecture (port),
etc. Just about everything done in Debian is done on public mailing
lists.

I don't think just pointing to a very long page with mailing list with
no other explanation is very helpful.

Olbigtenor, if you have a problem with particular package, you can go to
https://www.debian.org/Bugs/ look for that package you're having the
problem with and see a discussion related to that particular issue.

I.e. Here are all the issues related to firmware-amd-graphics --

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?dist=unstable;package=firmware-amd-graphics

You can look at a particular bug like this page --
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=907598

Then you can contribute to the conversation just by emailing to
907...@bugs.debian.org (reply link on the page).

In order to report bugs you can report them via email --
https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting

Or install reportbug which will help you format bug report along with
automatically selecting all the relevant configuration from your system
-- https://wiki.debian.org/reportbug

However you need to configure your computer to send email, which
sometimes can be a bit annoying.

Hope that helps,

Alex.

Funny, it's one of the first things I missed. But I guess it depends on
how you interact with the GTALUG, among other things.

Actually, I'd like to make a correction. I said "User Group", but

A hundred years between Red Hat talks. I got my first RedHat 5 install CD

I think that it has come to pass that the Linux kernel is the most widely
distributed kernel on the planet. Remember all the world domination
t-shirts that started popped up in the 90's? I even had a set of penguin
cufflinks that I got at a trade show.

The GTALUG acronym is the Greater Toronto Area Linux Users Group. In my
head however, I think of it as Gnu Toronto Area Linux Users Group. This way
I remind myself that I use GNU software on a Linux kernel.

For questions on the list, specifically mentioning distro in the subject is
good if the question is directly related to an install or configuration
issue. For smaller special interests, there use to be three or four
Install-fests or trade shows a year where Birds Of a Feather could flock
together. I don't see much of that advertised anymore.

At one time, to assist new Linux users with learning troubleshooting and
basic tools, Evan Leibovitch organized Newtlug. However finding sponsored
space was difficult and basically it was folded into GTALUG.

Fundamentally any hard/soft wares running a linux kernel are fair game for
Q & A on the list.

We even tolerate questions about M$ products, if it relates to
playing with SMB or other warez.

Organizing a place for a SIG to breakout and meet is a much more difficult
task. I think Evan can attest to that. I know he put a lot of effort into
Newtlug. However, finding a non competing convenient space to meet at a non
competing time was problematic.

I think this list is the local linux kernel users bucket and the membership
is diverse enough that most answers to questions can be, if not explicitly
found, here may certainly be referentially sourced here.

Jan, who was the closest thing to a mentor that I and other new users had
at the time, passed away many years ago. The recent passing of Peter
Hiscocks reminds me of a famous quote by Rousseau.

What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?

I still have the Toshiba Peter offered up to the list. It had the MP bios
issue. I had to strip out the battery and hd elements but it still boots
SoaS from a usb.

I'm a hacker, that is usually meant to be someone who is self taught, I
guess as opposed to those who have degree's in EE or Comp Sci. I did teach
myself DOS from manuals, but I learned much, if not most of I what I know
about installing and using Linux from the people messaging on this list.

These are the kind of people who take an interest in other people and help
them over some of the very complex hurdles of using this kernel; its
associated API's, which natively provide users with much finer grained
control over hardware than any of the mainstream OS's and last but not
least; the historical developments which have catapulted Linux beyond
hacker domain to mainstream desktop use.

I could never get Jan to tell me if he was the C of the /etc directory unix
lore. Basically the lesson was that developers should not sign consulting
contracts authored by employers, they should draft their own, in order to
protect the tools they write.

I always tell people that I chose Linux because I learn something new, not
just how to do something new. However, I never did learn if Jan was that
Carlson.

Greetings

Not the op here but i'll leave my $0.005.
I'm finding there are small ways the distros are different and when
these differences
cause some royal pitas it is quite useful to have some seriously clued
in person(s)
to ask for advice on what to do to rectify the issue. I really do not
want to splinter
the gtalug at all for I find that I am learning stuff from even the
comments etc given
on other distros but when I can't find anything on its immenseness
(sic - - the web)
then I'm stuck as I've got no programming background, even though it looks like
I need to start doing such too, being someone who merely uses computers as
tools, to do what I would like to get done.

Thanking one and all for their consideration and assistance!!!
