Re: AVG
I currently use Esset Smart Security. Even making recommended changes with it, I still find it more difficult to act upon alerts it provides. Further, their own staff acknowledges that version 9 is not accessible. If I ever go to Windows 10, I am told that 9 is necessary. Thusd, especially since my subscription is up, I am exploring other options, so I tried the free version of AVG since it was recommended by others. After a trip into the VIOS, a system restore, and a Windows Restore, I'm not so sure. I am quite confident I wouldn't have had this had I not tried AVG. -Original Message- From: Linda Mentink via Talk Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2016 9:39 PM To: Window-Eyes Subject: AVG Hi All, I don't use my computer much these days, but I have a question for those of you having trouble with AVG: Have you updated the set files for Window-Eyes, or are there none? Re: When will Edge Browser be ready Under WindowEyes
It is easy to be very confused at present. Window-Eyes still installs to a GWMicro folder. There is still a GwMicro website. There is AI Squared, and there is VFO. All one and the same. And then VFO is Freedom Scientific and Optelec and maybe AI Squared. I would like to think that my good friend Rod is correct in that the various companies will continue to develop their products independently of each other for a while yet, but it doesn't make good business sense in the longer term. If Microsoft chooses to talk to anyone regarding access to the Edge browser by screen readers, it will talk to a VFO senior executive member, and not necessarily to the representatives of the individual parts of the VFO group. I actualy think it significant that an extra "A" or the "sqquared" has not been added to the VFO title. And it was significant that Microsoft decided to roll out Narraot's access to the Edge browser, even though it knows that blind people who rely on screen readers do not seriously use Narrator. The VFO "muscle" is now greater than the sum of individual manufacturers negotiating with Microsoft, but it doesn't mean that MS will give us what we require. Vaughan. The two companies may be under the same umbrella, but, in the words of Sting, well, the Police rock band,"it's a big enough umbrella, but it'S always me that ends up getting' wet." I guess what I'm trying to highlight is the fact that the two companies will continue to work independently in the development of their screen reader offerings, at least in the short term. AVG
After reading comments from listers, I thought that AVG would be accessible with Window-Eyes 9.5 and Windows 7 64-Bit Pro. I think not so fast. My problems began as I found that the installation screen did not read properly. Then, when I got into the Zen afgter I finally got it installed, I found that screen didn’t read either. I tabbed and pressed enter at one point, why I don’t know because that was foolish. I suddently lost speech. I rebooted, and things got quite interesting. The drive would seem to be active for a while and stopped. After several other attempts with the same result, I had a sighted friend come over. All he saw was was a cursor blinking about every second. A reboot gave him the same results. He couldn’t get into Windows of Safe Mode. He WAS FOMA;;U AB;E TP GET into the BIOS amd ex[;pre sp,e p[topms/ We tried System Restore which appeared to fail. At least we were getting text shown on a working monitor. He then tried Windows Restore. Luckily that worked, and we got the message that System Restore had completed successfully. The loving Windows sounds and Window-Eyes came to life. I don’t know how much to blame on AVG. Certainly, I made a silly mistake. However, you guys who say AVG is so great, I wonder what your system specs are. I do have an HP Pavillion. As far as I’m concerned, AVG needs a big heap of help. This is the first E-mail I sent since the crash. Re: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone?
Hi: Being a trainer of access technology, I feel qualified to put in my two cents worth on this discussion, but since the penny is no longer produced in Canada, I will have to round it off to five cents. :) You may keep the change. :) I have been a trainer of Window-eyes and other blindness products since the DOS days, and I have had success showing my clients one way of performing the tasks that I was training them to do. As they would get more advanced, I would show them alternative methods. Sometimes, a client would discover another way to perform that task, and I am happy with that, because that means that he/she understands the process and is willing to experiment. I have to say though, that Steve is in a different position than those of us who do one on one training, because he is essentially speaking to a multitude of people who arde using all types of desktops or laptops, and all operating systems from Windows 7 to Windows 10, whereas people such as myself and several other people on this list are face to face with one indivual with one computer using one operating system, and we can therefore determine the easiest and most direct way for him or her to perform a given task. Hi John, The GoldWave Enhance app, which I wrote, only reads the start, end, and length of the selection, and you can see the Hot Key Manager within the app to review and change these hot keys. As for other hot keys, I'm not really sure which would need to be added to a GoldWave-specific key label dictionary to make it more user friendly, but anyone can define their own as needed. I've been a Window-eyes user ever since I converted from DOS but have never read the manual! So, for example, rather than having one tutorial on using Window-eyes with Windows 10, I'd have a series of short tutorials on various aspects. RE: services, privacy win 10
Hi: Yup, figuring out all the services is a bugger and there many many that I have not figured out so leave alone. I did turn off all the active tiles and then turned off apps running in the background I don't use. I also turned off Microsoft features I wouldn't use that sync or store things in the Microsoft cloud since these require internet access behind the scenes and may impact performance. I left most the services alone since I couldn't figure out if they would be needed as you mentioned but I think I turned a couple off or set them to manual or whatever, that was some time ago. I found a tool by typing "Reliability" into the start menu that abstracts some of the information about performance and errors and it is somewhat accessible with WindowEyes finding that Internet Explorer was crashing off and on, ya I knew that but... It looked like it was crashing during times I was not even using it - perhaps something behind the scenes is using it while not displaying it? I do know that if I am in Internet Explorer and it crashes it will lock up WE for at least a time. I could not figure out how to change the day nor week filters nor if there is other data WindowEyes is not telling me and it is a bit clunky but at least it works for recent, or weeks, messages that impact performance for some things. I am not confident enough to try anything related to setting up Performance Counters and creating my own reports and using WindowEyes in the Microsoft Management Console which is a split window with MDI elements is a bugger. Anyway guys, I hope some of us actually learn how to use our machines and the tools to manage it so we can share what we learn since it is a rather complex set of tools and many are not very user friendly with WE and some seem inaccessible unless we can figure out navigation and usage techniques let alone what they do and how to use them even if they were accessible. But these are the things the pros use when managing computers in a business so it is either learn them, stay in the dark or put the Geek Squad on speed dial - smile. On 31/08/2016 1:53 AM, net bat via Talk wrote: isn't this because outlook is useing the new email protacols from microsoft, which is not the same as the old pop3 or i map? or can outlook still use the old standards? gmail also uses a secure ssl connection for both incomeing and outgoing mail. my i map is set to smtp 465 for outgoing. and 993 for incomeing. -Original Message- From: Iaen Cordell via Talk Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2016 2:38 AM To: 'Neville' ; 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: RE: Gmail account setup Neville, the only way I was able to do this was to use thunderbird as the email client, like you outlook was a total waste of time but strangely TB was not a problem at all. I don't think the problem is at the Outlook end, all instructions were followed closely and rechecked, but more likely at the Gmail site end. After numerous unsuccessful tries in Outlook, I attempted to log into gmail.com with Firefox. Following entering the correct account details,a message was displayed saying that unusual activity had been detected on the account. The account is now blocked and I need to provide a phone number so a code can be sent to unlock the account. The Gmail account was originally set up and successfully tested at the Gmail site using Firefox prior to setting up Outlook. Does anyone know ifGmail, in its settings somewhere, needs to be advised of which email client will be employed to access email? Re: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone?
Sorry Jim, I was just making an off-handed joke with Sky. Probably should have been a bit more thoughtful and considerate before firing it off. I tend to agree with your sentiments when it comes to teaching one either how to use WE, but especially in how to make the best use of the Windows interface. More choices, more better . Bad grammar?, my bad. Larry On 8/30/2016 8:37 PM, Jim wrote: Sky, I would like to respectfully disagree with your suggestion. When I was taking an algebra class in college, my professor would give several methods for solving problems. A lot of students didn't like this. I happen to be in the minority. I liked it, because if one method didn't work I would have another method to try. For example, some students liked to use graphing to solve a problem while I preferred using the quadratic formula to solve problems when that was possible. I feel that the more ways we have to solve an issue the better off we are. OK, I understand that for a beginner too many ways might be a bit confusing, but as long as one isn't overwhelmed with info, having more than one way to solved a problem deffinetly works well for me! Just another suggestion. Have A Good 1! de . On 30-Aug-16 21:23, Larry Higgins via Talk wrote: Sorry Sky, but I just can't resist. Are you applying for the position ? Showing multiple ways can often clutter up the mind of the person who is learning any screen reader, such as Window-Eyes. 2. The tutorials need to be presented in a easier-to-understand language. It should provide steps for accomplishing things, such as, to open up Microsoft word, do the following. 1. press the windows logo key. The windows logo key is located on the bottom left side of the keyboard, next to the left control key. 2. Type in the words word to open up Microsoft word. Once you do that, Window-Eyes will say your version number of office word, such as 2010, 2013, or 2016. 3. After typing in the words word, press enter to open up Microsoft office word 2010. I would also suggest that the manual be re-written in an easier to understand language. I have read the manual and to me it doesn't sound like it is written in an easier to understand language for some people. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+skyt=shaw...@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Charles Short via Talk Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2016 5:15 PM To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Subject: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone? there is nothing wrong the manuals. - Original Message - From: "Paulette Vickery via Talk"To: "'Sky Mundell'" ; "'Window-Eyes Discussion List'" Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2016 11:53 PM Subject: RE: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone? Why not have someone who is good at writing and who understands how the program works, write the manuals. That way when telling the several ways to accomplish the same task, they could break the process down into separate small modules; such as Ways To Open Microsoft Word, Opening Word Way one, Opening Word Way Two, etc. I also agree that writing the manual in layman's language rather than for people who fully understand computers is best. If you can break information about something down so that a 6 year old can understand what is being explained, then everyone will be able to understand all explanations; plus, language can always be modified once it is written out fully.
