Recovery

2017-01-30 Thread Ted Larson via Talk
Dear List:

I purchased the window-eyes disc shortly before the certificate problem.
Now, I have updated to the latest version. If I have to reinstall
window-eyes, what will happen if I try to install with the cd and then try
to upgrade to the latest window-eyes? Will this certificate problem prevent
me from installing and then upgrading? Thanks. Regards: Ted Larson

Go Figure?

2017-01-30 Thread Dave via Talk
Hello,

I have a file, made with MS Word 2010. This file was started in 2010,
and is a long document filled with Phone Numbers of people, Places and
government offices.

I have added to this document, subtracted from it, and is an on going
document I use all the time.

Today, I was using a Windows 10 System, with MS Word 2010, and I called
this document up to use a phone number stored in this document.

I had page after page of information, Phone numbers, address, Names of
Businesses etc.You could call it a Mini Phone Book.

I could not find the numbers I needed. And I knew they should be there.
I had put them in there, so I know they should be there. But, I could
not find them.

So, I do keep a Back up of this document, so I grabbed the document and
called it up on an older XP System, still using Window Eyes 8.4.This
system also has a copy of the Same MS Word 2010, installed from the same
Disc.

And sure enough, the number I was looking for was there just as I
thought it should be.

So I put the file on a Flash drive and take it to the Windows 10 system.
I copy the file into the Documents folder and start up MS Word on the
Win 10 system.

I am using Window Eyes 9.5 on this system, and once again, I could not
find the phone number that I had just read on this same file, on the
older system using the older Window eyes version.

Now a lot of info was in the document. So much so, that I would easily
believe the document was complete. And yet, at least on this Win 10
system and WE 9.5, not everything is read.

Very strange, and so I ask any here, does any here have any ideas why
this document is read totally by the older machine with the older copy
of WE, and only a few numbers are missing when the same document is
called up on the Win 10 with WE 9.5.

Go Figure!

Grumpy Dave

Brenda, your post sheds more light on the fears that have gripped my tiny
soul since the current situation unfolded. I would never have known that GW
Micro was highly instrumental in getting HIMS, Inc. started in the United
States!

Like you, the help I have gotten from GW Micro has been stellar. When my
wee, small company offered money transfer services through Moneygram, it was
Mr. Marc Solomon, now gone, who helped me gain some reasonable access to the
poorly written Moneygram software that I had to use. Moneygram did have a
blind young man in their technical support department who was a Jaws user.
Note that I used the verb "was" because I'm not certain whether or not the
young man still works for Moneygram! Sufficing to say, he was unable to
help me with any issues pertaining to the accessibility of the Moneygram
software. I wondered what sort of services he was providing in tech
support, but I didn't ask him during our many conversations.

I do recall that Mr. Solomon and I spent several hours on the phone with
Moneygram whereby he was explaining to the company what it could do
differently to make its software fully accessible. Sadly, Moneygram WAS NOT
WILLING to make the necessary changes contending that it would require a
rewrite of the software from the ground up! I recall Mr. Solomon indicating
to the official we were in contact with that a rewrite of the software would
not be necessary and he did his best to point out the tweaks that could have
been made to their software with relative ease. In the end, Moneygram would
not budge and I had to terminate whatever contracts my company had with it.

I realise that I am an ancient wine repouring myself into a bottomless
bottle! Be that as it may, I've never heard, in this industry, of a
similarly situated corporation that goes over and perhaps beyond the call of
duty like GW Micro did for and with me. My fears are not allayed; rather,
they remain in place! The writing on the wall seems clear enough but
perhaps I should quit reading it, or else learn to indulge in false
pretense!

Sincerely,
Olusegun

Peter: that is my very point.

Certainly - off list - Doug did comment to me in a purely support question way,
and I was glad to receive it and my misunderstanding was resolved. Doug, David
Wu and Eric Dammery are all on the Executive group of VFO, and all know what is
going on.

So: fantastic for me to get Doug's response to a support question, but
disappointed that senior, experienced and talented people seem unable to give

Re: getting rid of a folder on Thunderbird

2017-01-30 Thread Neville via Talk

Hi Carol,

I did write to the WE list some months ago with a problem of the
Thunderbird Profile folder increasing in size over time even though
messages had been deleted from the message and trash boxes. Your friend
has a different problem but the same steps should work.

Neville

Instructions:
Download the latest Thunderbird and install it over the existing copy.
If the latest copy is already installed then just hold on to the latest
TBird programme because it will be used later.

Save any important email messages located in any folder because all will
be gone soon.

To be on the safe side, back upthe the Thunderbird folder found under
app data\roaming
This folder contains three entries with one being the large Profile
folder. If all goes wrong then the Profile folder can be copied back to
its original position. All will be as it was previously.

Or better still, just rename the Roaming\Thunderbirdfolder to something
like oldtbird.

But don't rename this folder until after backing up the settings with
Mozbackup.

Do a search for this utility and although it is out of date, it works well.

After installation, run the utility and choose to save the Thunderbird
settings. There are a number of boxes to check or uncheck depending what
is to be saved. Account details and addresses will need to be saved but
not the emails.

If not sure which settings to save then numerous backup files can be
made with different settings checked.

Once satisfied with the settings chosen, rename the Roaming\Thunderbird
folder as mentioned above.

Now, using the latest Tbird download, install it andd a new folder,
Roaming\Thunderbird will be created with a small blank Profile folder.

Make a copy of this new Roaming\Thunderbird folder to be on the safe
side. If you want to try some other settings then you have a folder
containing the blank Profile folder.

Using the Mozbackup utility, install the settings from the files created
earlier.

Run Thunderbird and check what has been installed and what is now missing.

If you are satisfied then the backup folders can be deleted or the
original folder can be renamed and Thunderbird will be the same as
before you started. i.e. you can experiment until you are happy with
the results.

The above seems complicated and dangerous but it is not. Each step of
the way copies have been made and if all fails, just use the original
large Profile and you'll be back to where you started.

Please let me know how it goes.

VFO has at least two choices: a growing number of unhappy and dissatisfied

Re: Window-Eyes is Dead!

2017-01-30 Thread Brenda via Talk
I think what is relevant depends on who you are. I was going about my
life and had no idea of the issues until I got the email about the
emergency update. A call to tech support further alarmed me so I posted
my question/concern to this list. The replies gave me some idea of what
was going on. I really didn't find anyone to be snyppy. It was helpful
and comforting to learn the history of W-e from its beginnings in the
90s among other things related to this topic. The replies helped me to
process the whole situation.

I have used Window-Eyes for about 10 years, and as my vision declined I
came to rely on it. Every day I am greeted by Window-Eyes when I turn on
my computer. In the past, I knew I would find the help I needed from
the folks at GW I had gotten to know over the phone.

I will use W-E as long as I can, but it does help me to know I'm not
alone. And since we aren't hearing much from AI squared, at least this
list is a way to get clues so I'm not totally in the dark.

I do not plan on continuing to discuss this, unless I have future
questions or maybe to compare info. And, had this list not been here, I
would be really clueless.

With the info I have received I can go on with my life. I hope this is
sufficient for those who aren't happy with this topic.

thanks for your patience

Brenda

getting rid of a folder on Thunderbird

2017-01-30 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk

Hi Listers,

There was a person on this list that said they used Thunderbird and had
a very large email folder. They managed to get it from GBs in size down
to MBs.

I have a friend that has a gmail account. She has this very large
folder, I believe the name of the folder is All Mail. Inside this
folder are nearly 16,000 messages, most likely everything she has
received since setting up her gmail account. She has tried to delete
the messages and the folder. They keep coming back and rebuilding
themselves. She wants them gone. Can someone give me some possible
things to help her to try to get rid of this huge folder? We have done
the obvious, shift-deleted all of the files and tried to remove the
folder, which will not delete. Thank you for any assistance.

Window-Eyes is Dead!

2017-01-30 Thread Mike Bernard via Talk
I couldn't agree more Jim. In fact, just to add my own two cents worth to
the pot, for those who are so worried about Window-Eyes's demise, here's an
idea; If you have a current version of Window-Eyes on your Windows 8, 8.1,
or 10 computer, and it just happens to be functioning fine regardless of the
fact that it may be outdated, why not just stick with that version for now?
Even if the program does end up going down the tube some day, at least you'd
still have a copy of WE that actually works. Just a thought.

RE: Window Eyes recap

2017-01-30 Thread Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. via Talk

The writing on the wall seems clear enough but
perhaps I should quit reading it, or else learn to indulge in false
pretense!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

To all current and potential users of the Extended Dictionary app.

V0.69.5.1 - Release Note.

As all current users of the package has noticed the last few days, the
package speaks a short license note, at startup. It has been informing
you that the license time was about to expire. All due to a bug in the
software.

The Extended Dictionary package now has been updated, the bug fixed, and
the license period been prolonged considerably for all parts of the
package. All users will need to update their Extended Dictionary
installation, should you want to continue using the app.

Due to technical issues, I have been unable to upload the updated WEPM
file to the App Central, all weekend. I will be dealing with the issues
of the upload as time permits. Yet, I want you all to get your free copy
of the updated package immediately. It therefore has been released
outside App Central, and can be downloaded from the link below.

Notice:

To stop any speculations, the technical issues I am experiencing with
upload to App Central, has nothing to do with any merging of GW,
AISquared and VFO.

You find the newest version of the extended Dictionary here, and may
want to keep this link, as it will be used for future versions in
release as well:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/c4eipguo23a1jrr/Extended_Dictionary.wepm?dl=0

Please contact me directly, should you have any further issues,
questions or good ideas.

Hi:

Well, I've played with Narrator, even the one in the build 15002 of Windows,
and, it has a long way to go to come close to even NVDA, System Access, Jaws
or Window-Eyes.

I hope we still have a few choices, because, I would be very upset if
Narrator was the only game in town.

The speech engines from Microsoft are about as responsive as an old serial
synthesizer running at about 10 baud. In short, they suck, as far as
responsiveness is concerned. Sure, they sound ok, but, they're falling
short of the mark in everything else.

On the Mac platform, I was blown away by Alex's responsiveness. Alex is a
great voice, and, if you've never used a Mac, you just won't believe how
responsive Alex is. And, with the Mac even being faster, I imagine Alex is
even more responsive.

Anyway, with all due respect, Microsoft would have a lot of catching up to
do before they can even touch NVDA, let alone the paid screen-readers.

Dave,

Thank you for your thoughtful email.

As you will see from my signature I have moved much of my personal computing
to the Apple platform. However, for my job I still use Windows and several
of the screen readers/magnifiers on that platform.

The evolution of computing for individuals continues and the support of
Window Eyes is just part of a larger phenomenon, exemplified by cheaper
adaptive solutions for the blind and vision-impaired. If Microsoft follows
Apple and improves Narrator to the point where it competes favorably with
the expensive screen readers we have used for the last 25 years or so, it
won’t be just WE that fades away. The economic model of the thousand dollar
screen reader will be untenable.

BW Micro had a great staff and many had been their for years. When

The personal service we all received from GW Micro is probably gone

Large Companies tend to move slower, and fix problems when they get

I am Thankful for the Support I was given when the most recent update
was made available. Without this, all of us would be using NVDA today.

I do expect Window Eyes will be continuing, but at a much slower pace

There may come a time when Microsoft does a new Windows 11, or 12, that
makes Window Eyes un=usable. The folks at the top of this Big New

We all have seen changes in the staff, and other issues that were slow

And lets face it, all of us here have invested a fair amount of cash

RE: Extended Dictionary, V0.69.5.1, Important Release Note

2017-01-30 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi:

First, if I may make a suggestion about the url you gave.

Whenever you issue a link to a dropbox file, if you just use the link they
give you, all users get a web page advertising dropbox first. If you change
the 0 at the end of the link to a 1, the file downloads directly without any
advertising from dropbox.

So, the link that will make your package download directly, without any
dropbox advertising would look like:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/c4eipguo23a1jrr/Extended_Dictionary.wepm?dl=1

Should make things easier.

To all current and potential users of the Extended Dictionary app.

V0.69.5.1 - Release Note.

As all current users of the package has noticed the last few days, the
package speaks a short license note, at startup. It has been informing you
that the license time was about to expire. All due to a bug in the software.

The Extended Dictionary package now has been updated, the bug fixed, and the
license period been prolonged considerably for all parts of the package. All
users will need to update their Extended Dictionary installation, should you
want to continue using the app.

Due to technical issues, I have been unable to upload the updated WEPM file
to the App Central, all weekend. I will be dealing with the issues of the
upload as time permits. Yet, I want you all to get your free copy of the
updated package immediately. It therefore has been released outside App
Central, and can be downloaded from the link below.
