RE: Where are the informed comentators?

2017-02-23 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi:

A lot of folks swear by JAWS simply because they'vee always used it and it
has done what they need.

I bought WE because it did what I wanted, was cheaper, and I liked the
licensing model, e.g. they did not use copy protection, meaning they trusted
me, as a user, not to give copies away to someone else. I have respected
that trust.

I have used JAWS at my previous job, and, apart from learning the
differences between the products, had no serious issues with either one.

There are things one product does better than the other, but, over all, I
can work with either one. I do like Window-Eyes' approach to screen review
better than JAWS', because, in JAWS, you have to switch from PC cursor to
JAWS cursor to do any kind of screen review. Window-Eyes, on the other
hand, expects you to use the separate arrow keys to do actual movement, but,
the numeric pad to do any reviewing of the screen. If you are in JAWS, and
are using the JAWS cursor and try to use the separate set of arrow keys to
move around a document or Web page, things do not work as expected, because
you haven't gone back to PC Cursor. The JAWS method of things seems to
harken back to the days of the old PC keyboard without the separate arrow
keys, where the arrow keys were in conjunction with the numpad. But, if
it's all you're used to, you know it anyway and work with it.

Something I've always wondered, anecdotal, but I know Jaws users who swear
by Jaws. Why? Are they all ignorant? I don't have any plans to replace my WE
with Jaws, but I bet if I had joined a Jaws list, I'd encounter blind
consumers who have little positive to say about WE. So I'm asking, WE users
to state why Jaws is terrible. I'm not interested in hearing about bad
customer service or a lower price (I purchased WE because it was cheaper).
I would like someone to address only the two products.

What made you think they ever expected to continue the window-eyes
product. I don't believe that was ever in the cards. Why on earth
would they sell two screen readers. Of course they'll sell you current
version of window-eyes, and they'll likely sell you a s m a. If you're
willing to give them money, why not. Freedom's customer support has
been terrible over the years, so no jaws for me.

Terrible PR is begotten by a lack of compassion or concern. You don't get
rid of 99% of the staff who helped make the product great and expect to
continue that great product line. That's the height of errogance or
stupidity, and that's how you destroy your competition. You create a
situation such that there is no competition. Gw Micro merged with AISquared
who then really sold out to be gobbled up by VFO. It makes me sad. No doubt
Doug knows exactly what's going on and what the plan is for Window-Eyes, but
unfortunately he isn't an independent business owner any more. He now works
for VFO and must abide by VFO policies. I don't fault Doug though for making
what he felt was his best business decision. There are great reasons most of
us on this list stuck with Window-Eyes rather than to migrate to JAWS. But
why list them when they would fall on deaf ears - ears that don't care to
listen.

In this case, we can't vote at the polls since we have no vote that would
count at that table. We must vote with our wallets. Vote with our voices on
blogs. Vote simply by not supporting (if possible) any future products
produced by VFO. That may not be as possible as I would like since they have
eliminated much of the competition thereby destroying much of the consumer's
choice. This country through its laws was supposed to support especially
minority groups being oppressed (and oppressed isn't even as strong a word
than the one I wanted to use). But anyway does any one really feel supported
by AISquared which really know doesn't exist now? It's all VFO. A real
merger would allow for the existence of AISquared, but it seems to be
apparent to me that this was nothing other than a complete buyout. Hopefully
there will be true alternatives to JAWS. I know NVDA is out there, Narrator
and Voiceover for the Mac. But Narrator and NVDA would really have to come
up a lot to even get anywhere close to where Window-Eyes was. We'll have to
lend some support to the NVDA developers via donations. We all have to make
our own business decisions and what works best for each of us. There isn't
another company like GW Micro was.

I debated whether or not to weigh in on this, but as someone who has
literally grown up with window-eyes, I got my first computer in 1997 at age
10 with WE 2.0 on floppy discs, I felt that 20 years of using this reader
day in and day out warranted some sort of response.

First, a recent story. I had a video driver issue with WE and the latest
build. I couldn't fix it. I did everything to tech support person said that
they would do. He remoted into the machine, no luck. I reformatted the hard
drive, which I had planned to do at some oint to clean things up, and the
driver issue is fixed, knock on wood. I bring all of this up because I said,
point blank, "I have had this issue before and Aaron or Steve sat down with
me and we figured it out." The support person's response was, "those guys
aren't here anymore, so ..."
So, it sounds like they have laid off the programmers and devs of
window-eyes, holding onto the most basic personelle to answer the most basic
of questions. Mine was a big curve ball, at least that's the way it felt.

RE: Where are the informed comentators?

2017-02-23 Thread Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. via Talk
Enterprise compliance? Hmm, silly play on words! It's all good; after all,
a secretary, unless such a one works for government, is an Administrative
Assistant. Got to love that!

When GW Micro was alive and well, the company always went overboard to help
me make Window-Eyes work with whatever app I needed for work purposes. This
is one huge reason why I prefer Window-Eyes over Jaws! Another reason: I
don't have to deal with a DONGLE and I could install Window-Eyes on more
than two or three computers. The SMA were generous and, back in its hay
days, an LTO was in place. There also wasn't any price differential between
a standard and a pro license. In that regard, I did not feel cheated!

But, this is reality: Whatever CSUN or CMoon may say in March--whatever
ATIA may conjure--whatever the various Conventions may whisper in my ears--I
remain ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN beyond allthings else that Window-Eyes is no
longer dying, it is dead and I am just skinning it to smitherings for
purposes of scientific experiment.

Sincerely,
Olusegun

I think that both jaws and window-eyes are really great screen readers. The
thing you need to take in to consideration is what things does jaws do that
window-eyes can't do. And the same thing when it comes to window-eyes. I
have used the window-eyes for office version and while I noticed some
differences with window-eyes and jaws, I noticed that when I used jaws and
when I used the mail app for windows10 I noticed that the inbox would focus
with jaws. But when using the mail app for windows 10 with Window-eyes the
mailbox would not focus. While I asked about this on the list when it came
to window-eyes and the mail app, I still haven't emailed aisquared support
on this issue, which I will do after this message.

I have windows 7 and Outlook 2013, but I would guess the steps are the same
for this. There is a Window-Eyes hotkey control-alt-a. If you press this

Re: Where are the informed comentators?

2017-02-23 Thread Brenda via Talk

Hello List,

I was starting to feel status quo and then the topic came up again. The
depressing thing is that it presents a sad reality.

According to linkedin Aaron Smith works for VFO in a role called
"enterprise Compliance." Not really sure what that is, but here is an
interesting definition...

deloitte.wsj.com/riskandcompliance/files/2013/07/EnterpriseCompliance.pdf f
Result details
Enterprise compliance is a coordinated approach to compliance
spanning multiple businesses, organizational units, and geographies,
enabled by people, processes, and technology.

You can surf for even more interesting/scary definitions, but the thing
I'm taking away is that VFO is looking out for their interests and
definitely doesn't care about us.

And I doubt they even care if we don't purchase Window-Eyes or jowls.

The thing that annoys me is that VFO probably won't develop one more
major upgrade for W-e which would give me an install disk for 9.5.4 and
beyond. Since this recent fix was not a major upgrade they will send a
disk for $20 probably or a link to the upgrade assuming you have an
alternate screen reader or sighted assistance to install it. I guess
you have to have an older disk, install it, then if it is earlier than
the certificate issue install 9.5.4 that you have save to a
(non-install) disk. fortunately I have W-E disks back to 7.5+-.

When I spoke with the VFO ?support? person she said she gets lots of
calls from W-e users. I'm guessing VFO is trying to figure out the best
way to deal with a large group of displaced users. I suspect that in
the narrow noncompetitive market they can do whatever they want and are
just trying to assess the risks.

I'm hoping that at C-sun people will be asking questions and that
answers will appear on various lists or maybe even an announcement from
VFO (not holding my breath). I'm hoping NVDA continues to improve for
my win7 machine. Perhaps for win10 narrator will be like voiceover is
to the mac. And since GW used to work with Microsoft, I wonder if the
MS accessibility folks will try to include W-e features - one can hope.

   Hi all.

List member comments regarding VFO support once again raise the question
as to the future of Window-Eyes. For those who do not like this thred -
   hit delete "now."

But for me - the burning question for sometime has been the absence of
critical, informed insider comment. We are in need of an informed
adaptive technology press, which by way of blog posts, interviews with
leaders and knowledgeable opinion expression, shed light on what is
happening in this access technology market place.

I have not seen evidence of anyone running an in-depth interview with
the executives of VFO. Neither have I seen inciteful comment on VFO's
behaviours in areas such as customer relationships, product research and
development, and the appropriateness of private equity funding of access
   technology.

Based solely on the evidence i've gleaned from personal observation and
the comments of fellow list members - VFO has no intention of
rejuvenating Window-eyes. If the intentions were different, the"other
software" option that people have referred to when talking about
telephone support would say "Window-Eyes. VFO has not contacted me as a
payed license holder to let me know of new offers and fancy tricks to
have me spend more money. FS Podcasts are for the purposes of FS -
not VFO.

Oh well: time to put on the armour against the flaming I might get.

   Vaughan.

Thanks for sending this over.
Comparing these frequency bands, I can remember why I switched to the ISO
Standard frequency bands. (It was many years ago.)
I noticed that the low end seemed a little too high with the Winamp
frequency bands. In other words, the lows were not very low. I don't think
you can get a decent low end starting at 70 Hertz.
Also, I liked the high end better with the ISO Standard bands. Why would you
put three settings so close together? I could hardly tell the difference
between the three highest settings.

RE: Where are the informed comentators?

2017-02-23 Thread Andre via Talk
I haven't said too much, but as someone who's been a customer of GW Micro
since 1990, my college days, I feel I should also be able to weigh in.
Simply I don't believe VFO cares about us Window-Eyes users whatsoever.
Therefore, unless the deal they might invent better work for me. Otherwise
they won't get my business as it shold be for all of us. We vote with our
wallets as do oher consumers. Obviously they could care less what we think.

There isn't
another company like GW Micro was.

day in and day out warranted some sort of response.

First, a recent story. I had a video driver issue with WE and the latest

So, we'll see, I intend to hold on until the last because I cannot afford
JFW, my Voc Rehab case is closed, and not sure about learning a new screen

All for now, just my quick thoughts.

It is a Shame, because as a Group, they provided very good Service and

very good.

My own VFO experience was not as useful or Helpful as Brenda's.

Mine ended uptaking about 45 minutes, and ending with getting ZeroHelp.

Spoke with one guy who knew nothing about Window Eyes. He said he would
transfer me to someone who did. I was disconnected.

Called back. Went through the Menus, and again, spoke with someone

to go myself, and so could not stay around as this person attempted to
transfer me to someone else.

I ended up solving my own problem eventually.

Re: Where are the informed comentators?

2017-02-23 Thread Loy via Talk
I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I wonder if VFO even knows what they
are going to do with Window Eyes. I was told that the current version of
Fusion is powered by Window Eyes, but the next release will be powered by JAWS.
ZoomText 11, just released says it works great with JAWS but no mention of WE.
I asked support if ZT 11 would work with WE as well as ZT 10.1, the support
person said management had not told them. Then later I got an email that said
it should.

FS Podcasts are for the purposes of FS - not VFO.

Oh well: time to put on the armour against the flaming I might get.

  Vaughan.

Well, I don't know what the Winamp equalizer frequency bands are. But in the
Playback settings, you can use ISO Standard instead of Winamp's frequency
bands, which is what I have mine set to. I haven't looked, but since it's a
standard, I'm sure there's info on the Web about what those ISO Standard
frequency bands are.

Re: Winamp Equalizer and the Winamp Script

2017-02-23 Thread Evan Reese via Talk
You also need to make sure the equalizer is actually on. Just because you're
in the window doesn't mean it's working. When you're sure you're in the
equalizer window, hit the letter n to make sure it's on. The way to be sure
is to set the preamp or one of the bands to an extreme high or low,
especially something in the midrange, then hit the letter n repeatedly. You
can hear the equalizer going on and off that way.

I am just guessing at your problem, but after pressing alt+g, you need
to press ctrl+tab to make sure that you are really in the EQ window. At
that point you should be able to use the first two rows of the keyboard

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm talking down to you or taking you to

Hello everyone,

Apple has asked me to post the list of accessibility fixes they put into
iTunes version 12.5.4. The current version of iTunes is 12.5.5. Each
release they typically fix a few accessibility issues. The list of fixes to
the 12.5.4 release are:

iTunes 12.5.1 for Windows Fault with column browser
can't interact with each speakers when selected
no longer reads out the name of Airplay speakers
not reading selections from syncing panes
skips Lyrics text area in Up Next and Get Info
Unable to add multiple airplay speakers
Unable to install apps from iTunes > iOS device with iTunes 12.5.1 for
Windows

Video listed as static box when played in iTunes Window
Get Info hangs when
does not read out star rating control
does not read volume slider (or any slider) changes
Unable to navigate to check/plus button in Airplay popup
calls out the "+" as "button" instead of "Add to Library button" after
selecting CMA

calls out "Season" section in TV Shows as "Unknown"
found two hidden items in the LCD labeled as "unknown"
should announce "Pause 'album title' button" when selected album is playing
skips over Artist / Album info in LargeArtwork MP
does not read out the label of the movie ratings (G, PG-13, etc) or the
movie quality (HD)

I realize this list is cryptic but this does show they are working at it.
If you have Window-Eyes or JAWS issues with iTunes, Apple has asked that you
write up a very detailed description of the problem and email it to:

mailto:accessibil...@apple.com

The more specific you are to your issues the more likely they will be
resolved.

Mine ended uptaking about 45 minutes, and ending with getting ZeroHelp.

Spoke with one guy who knew nothing about Window Eyes. He said he would

Called back. Went through the Menus, and again, spoke with someone

I ended up solving my own problem eventually.

RE: VFO tech support

2017-02-23 Thread Robert via Talk

Sent from Mail for Windows 10

From: Brenda via Talk
Sent: 22 February 2017 22:45
To: Window-Eyes Discussion List
Subject: VFO tech support

Hello Listh

Well, just for fun I called VFO today to see what they thought would be
a good security software to run with
Window-eyes.

When I first called, I pressed 2 for tech support,
then the choice for
jaws support press 1, zoomtext 2 and all other software 3. I guess
Window-eyes is all other software - not a good feeling.

While waiting on hold for at least 45 minutes, I heard a revolving ad
for various JFS/OPTELEC products. Not a word about Window-eyes
capabilities etc.

I spoke with a person who worked out of her home. I have gotten folks
that worked from home before. My thought is that they can't transfer
you to anyone else if they can't help you, and they don't have
day-to-day contact with other support people. she told me she is a
jowls user but all support people had to learn Window-eyes, and she has
it on her computer so she can help window-eyes users. I asked if there
were any tech support people who were very familiar with Window-eyes,
and she thought a "Dave" worked for VFO. I asked about tech people
using the remote assistance portion of Window-eyes, and she said that
was possible if needed. the Initial tech support person would send a
request to someone who would call back. (this could slow down getting
something resolved.)

So then I asked about security software. She was very positive toward
Windows Defender. she said she used vipre but didn't have window-eyes
on the computer that Vipre was on in order to help me with any issues.
She said AVG had an issue where it made jowls 18 nonfunctional. She
said AVG was telling people the only way to get the issue fixed was to
have many effected users call AVG. Back in the day, GW seemed to connect
with AVG and had gotten a similar issue resolved for Window-eyes users.

As for Kaspersky, she said it might disrupt Window-eyes, although she
